I would definitely play after the wipe if all my cubits/plots would be there and also my char names. But, I think most of players would distance themselves from the game because there would be nothing new to discover/do until they regain everything they gathered before the wipe.
But, with that said… there could be ways…
Say for example new planets are born with better, much better environments, that are more attractive and, you can visit them only if you leave everything behind.
The old planets would start to degrade, decompose, because… I dunno, a plague, a supernova exploded near our solar system and we can’t save our world but we can save ourselves by traveling to another part of the galaxy.
From the wipe announcement to the actual world wipe… there could be a community challenge, everyone gather and help to build the biggest portal ever seen, or an ark or something where you can go there either “naked” or with only the inventory that you have. Once you reach those new planets, which are not randomly generated, please check the No Man’s Sky comments about the procedural aspect and randomness… let’s just say, it’s not very good in every situation, so, once you reach the new world you can’t go back and you need to settle there.
Those that remain in the old world, once the wipe is triggered, they get spawned with all their plots available on the char in the new world.
And there you go… it can be done.
As for those that could get upset about it…
You can’t satisfy everyone. Even now, those that started from the beginning… are upset that others (like backers, such as myself) are more evolved, have more resources gathered or higher levels.
