Official Discord ... Cannot send messages [resolved]

Why do I need to have a phone in order to chat in the official Discord?

Yeah that is weird. Was some setting changed somewhere on the server maybe?

Did you scan a QR code in a discord channel recently? I’ve heard about this issue here and there

No. I haven’t. My discord account is secure and hasn’t been hijacked. Seems the server settings were changed to require phone verification.

But, it also didn’t ask me when I posted in general a little bit ago.

The server owner can restrict access and require some people to verify themselves :woman_shrugging:

Indeed. I’m curious as to why this is even a thing on such a public discord.

I saw that, too. I’m not willing to supply personally identify information to a random company on the internet that doesn’t seem to have a business model but does collect personally identifying information, so that means I don’t interact on Discord.

Sure, small loss, but I may represent a serious number of people who are not willing to prostitute themselves for social interaction. Something to consider.

It seems the server verification level was too high & has been for a week or two now - they are trying to get the official discord verified. I asked about it and they said they could turn it down a bit.

Try to login/respond now and see if it works.

Yes, the requirement is now gone. Thanks.

This is in discord under setting-my account

Sorry for the inconvenience everyone, as @MajorVex mentioned, we are trying to get the discord verified and we misinterpreted a requirement to do so! This has been dialed back. That being said, if you’re able to activate dual factor verification, it is a good idea!

Just be aware that number porting turns 2FA over SMS into no-factor auth. Boom, suddenly your bank accounts are drained and your credit card maxed out at Amazon.

Although I’m sure it would never happen to anyone here.
