Please Opensource the Game

It’s blatantly obvious that Monumental has no plans for this game despite it having such a phenomenal foundation (“good bones” as Monty would say). It’s literally been YEARS since you bought this game from James. There is a small but passionate community willing to pick up this game and enhance it but we can’t do so unless you open source it.

So you propose that they open source the game but keep paying for the servers? Or shall the community support the operating costs as well?
How about the Sony deal? How to get out of that?
And what would Monumental get out of it? They paid something for the game, how would they recover their investment?

Kind regards,

Not only what @ciprianb said, but you would have better luck and more success making a new game on newer tech with better code.

No, the community would cover the server costs. Server costs for Boundless, given current AWS and Azure rates would be negligible for Boundless’ community size. Hell, I’d pay it myself.

Operating costs? lol. What operating costs? The cost for one person to occasionally hop on these forums and maybe post once a quarter? We can do better than that as a community and we don’t need a dedicated person making a salary to do so.

The joy of having handed a beautiful game to a passionate community when they, themselves, clearly had no concrete plans for it. Other than that? Nothing. Absolutely nothing. You see, sometimes in business, you invest in something and it doesn’t pan out. That’s okay. That’s why you diversify your investments. Boundless isn’t working out for them because they clearly don’t know what to do with it so cut it loose and let someone else (the community) actually do something with it. Hell, after we do that, they could always come back in to invest at that time to make some $$$.

See above answer.

Have you seen the code? My impression of James and his team is that they were actually quite good developers. The game itself, while it could use some visual touch-ups for 2025, is still beautiful and wouldn’t need re-engined or rewritten.

It’s been literally YEARS since they acquired Boundless. If they haven’t “gotten out of” whatever deal James struck with Sony yet then they obviously have no plans to so this is a moot point as they were able to purchase the game from James despite it being under said Sony deal.

This isn’t rocket science, guys. Monumental bought a game and they’ve done absolutely nothing with it in the way of updates, enhancements, marketing, etc. At some point they probably had some kind of plan to do something with it but, like Crowfall, it is dead and dusted.

I’d say code for chiseling and voxel placement is pretty advanced, it would be awesome to be able ot re-use that, even if having to redo everything else.

No one has, so to say its well-written or not, is up for debate.

That said, I have already reached out to Monty (I’ve emailed him monthly for several months without response yet) mentioning things about what’s happening with the game, is he willingly to sell it, what can I do to help, etc. etc.

I’ve just come to the conclusion that the game is just going to be maintained until it isn’t. As many have said, play the game or don’t. You would also have better luck messaging/emailing Monty as you do posting on the forums, I doubt he even reads them, hoping he proves me wrong on that one day.

It would be better just making a new game … Boundless has a lot of stink on it for a lot of people.

I’m pretty sure they realise the potential of the game, but short of hiring James’s team to update the game, it will take allot of work, or some new tech to help them be able to update the game at any real speed, even once they have a team to do so. I’m a bit worries they just bought the game for the Engine, in which case they defiantly wont open source it, but I’m hopeful still that this game, with some work, could be a flagship for it.

I agree on this. There are all sorts of voxel based games being developed and put out, sometimes by a small team. A good example is Cubic Odyssey. It’s like minecraft NMS and I’m looking forward to it.

But, @Dhusk I would jump on and invest in a new Boundless game. But would you make it PC only, or would you do a SONY or Microsoft X-Box deal so you’d have a solid investor? Or would you depend upon the Boundless community to invest, even though a lot of the backers got burned by Wonderstruck?

I just wish they would release the update that was finished 4 years ago. Open sourcing the game seems like a pipe dream, but it would be cool.

honestly, im happy it still running
as for update, i recently saw updates for games didint touched last 4-5 years, updates for games went EA 4 years ago and didint touched since
so according to current events 2 years without update is just a short period, not worth the notice

you want to play still? so play
dont want to play anymore? uninstall it
have better idea? make your own game

That update was never finished. It also contains elements that would probably kill the game today, as everyone could have their own universe on their own server.

well…I wouldn’t get rejen bombed out of my mining spot :stuck_out_tongue: Thats one plus of being able to play solo.

I dislike the private server idea. I do like the ability to connect them all together to create basically what we have now though and if the servers did shut down at least the game could be played after.

Single player Boundless sounds horrible to me and a planet with all the resources also would be a hard no for me. The MMO is what really sets Boundless apart from any games like it. You can’t do that in nearly any other building game. Minecraft sort of.does it … In it’s own way, but seeing everyone’s builds, creativity and style is something special. Seeing other people’s sovereigns, getting help from people, the economy, I could go on all day. Running your own server with a group of 5 or 10 you get almost none of that at least not at the scale the MMO universe gives you.

The game doesn’t need to be open-sourced,.not that it wouldn’t be cool, but most of the new people just see the game as a finished product and technically it is.

I sort of agree with this…BUT…I would like to have my own universe so when they stop the servers I would have my own.

My understanding was that it was finished, but that the private planning spawning took longer than the refund period and the developers wanted to figure out a way to fix that prior to release. Perhaps I am mistaken and there were other things that still needed to be completed.

I used to think I would never prefer to play on a private server, but these days I think I might be happier on one. The rest of the update is what I actually want, though.

private universe? probably with admin codes? to spawn everything i want? just 50 creative planets instead of 1?
and for what?
i prefer mmo Boundless  i love seeing what new players can build making our Boundlessverse more lively and beautiful every day

It really doesn’t matter. Daydreaming about Monumental updating the game is sort of like daydreaming about winning a billion dollar lottery. The odds of both events seem to be about the same. There really isn’t any reason to get upset about what someone else daydreams about. The game is what it is.

I heard it was NOT finished, and they would not release the part that was done that it had to be released as a complete update.

What wasn’t done and why did it have to be released as a complete update? Even if it was tightly coupled and couldn’t be separated into separate pieces, the functionality for setting up private servers should have been able to be removed simply by commenting out the UI components for making a private server. Remove the access to the parts that didn’t work right, and you remove the parts that don’t work right. The developers for this game, in general, seem like they would have had to be highly intelligent and know what they were doing to make the game work. It is possible they wrote total spaghetti code and couldn’t separate it, but you can still remove access to the pieces of the code that you don’t want people using and continue to use the basic functionality. Honestly, game developers rely on customer ignorance to get away with murder. Coding is hard! Arg! What can we do but leave the customers hanging with no way out?

I would get fired for that mess if I tried it. But I don’t work in games. I work in an industry where they expect the developers to actually do their job. Poor me.

In 2020 it was still in testing a less then a year later they were working on Bauldersgate and Sept 2022 the game was sold off to its current owner. They never finished the testing and fixes before running off leaving us in maintenance then ultimately sold it off. The updates they were working on at the time we were told it could not be released in parts. Don’t know why just what we were told. Personally only thing that I was interested in was the Skill page update which there was a lot of confusion in how it was going to work like how much grind Vs reward and such. Also was looking forward to the goo update. the expanded universe I felt would just dilute the game more.
