So, is there any point in the type of block you use to build your home?
I know that the look/color is the reason people use certain blocks. Otherwise, is there any other point to this? Durability of block does not seem to matter.
I am guessing this is basically just for looks.
I just went for looks.

Yes, actually. More refined, complex blocks like brick have higher prestige ratings than rock or stone or trunks. Colors imported from other worlds offer an “exotic” bonus to prestige scores. So, vulpto red stone has a slightly higher score than solum white stone.
Wood will be getting the same treatment as stone, with various refined and polished wood blocks having higher prestige scores than basic timbers. Eventually, highly refined stones and woods should have roughly the same prestige scores at their highest levels, so a well built settlement does not have to rely on being made from just stone. Exotic metals and gems will grant higher prestige still.
So, freely build with what looks good to you, and accent and improve your builds where you can with refined decorative blocks.
