Portal thoughts

I just tried to use a token from a portal that was already open…it didn’t work ofc. I think it would be handy for cities, hubs, build contests, etc if they could all connect to the same portal. Figuring this might also help with BL’s portal/bandwidth concerns?

I was wanting to place some “elevators” or inner-city travel portals and would really like several of them to connect to the same main portal, instead of having to build a full receiving portal for each one. :woman_shrugging:

I’ve wanted this before for similar reasons but the bit I can’t figure out is how do you route the return trip? Without that these portals become surprise one way trips which could be used to grief players by stranding them in hostile or high tier environments

What happens when you enter the Host Portal - where do you come out?

I can see multiples coming to 1 portal, but how would going into it work? Clicking and selecting area would not exactly be a fluent transition.

True.

If it is special portal I don’t see why there wouldn’t be a menu on interact to choose destination. There’s already a menu for fueling and other stuff.

Having to open a menu before going through a portal kinda defeats the purpose of the feature that drew me into this game…
Seamless portals.

My guess is that that coding the menu in is going to be a pain to code as well, at the moment you get a preview of the other side when you come close to it, that needs to be changed the menu interaction needs to be integrated, the portal cost and size needs to be recoded (even if it is just take the biggest or add all the cost up, it is new code). So a whole new set of portals to be coded in and maybe work.

I would rather see a different building like a warp stone platform, which lets you warp to other connected platforms on the same planet, so you can use it as an elevator or whatever springs to mind.

The only plausable way to handle that would be to have the host portal rotate through the attached portals. But that would quickly add a ton of additional bandwith strain to the clients and servers.

Half-cooked idea…my bad lol
Dang it :thinking::upside_down_face:

I had a similar idea. Normal portals that work as they do now, and a new portal type (Stargate) where a single portal could have multiple destinations.

I don’t worry about implementation, that’s for devs to work out, I’d like to see this type of portal since I find if useful in some scenarios.
And nobody is talking about taking away current portals, both can exist as separate thing.

would be cool if it cycles locations in front off you

There could be a one-way portal type. Similar to how a warp opens but permanent.

It would have to be cheaper in some way though not sure if they could just set the current portal system to eat .5 oort/hour or something.

A person could set up a set of the right blocks, or use the permissions menu to define the portal type and then multiple tokens could be used to one-way into that spot.

Honestly i bet this would see a fair amount of use.

Only problem I see with 1 way portals is I get lost enough with 2-way portals.

+1 Stargate. Different portal types for different needs. Genius.
