I try really hard to post only upbeat, fun and interesting topics.
This time however , I feel it necessary to voice an opinion that seems to go against the grain.
There have been similar topics here in the forums and many posts in several discord servers about how sad, rude or otherwise negative it is that there are sovereign worlds rented by players that keep not only their portals private but their beacons closed.
A very fast count on the Boundlexx app shows currently around 250 sovs are active. Even without knowing the percentage that are private, that still leaves a whole lot of worlds to explore/gather/hunt and in come cases even plot space and build with permission.

sigh
I had this long winded, eloquent and witty book written that laid out all sorts of the pros and cons of Private sov worlds.
But itās after midnight here. And after editing 3 times ⦠hereās the deal ā¦
Player pays for a rental world. Player gets to decide, within the parameters provided by the games creators, to do whatever tickles their fancy with said world. That is EXACTLY the purpose of rental worlds.
I am here to defend the decision ⦠for whatever reason ⦠that a player keeps an sov closed to the general community.
Private rentals are not a bad thing. Itās a game design thing.
Hereās a few unsolicited suggestions ⦠for those that want to world hop and explore more worlds.
Rent your own. ( the plethora of reasons and suggestions to raise money erased. Self explanatory.
Use a friends. Highly suggest getting permission first. Having a cuttletrunk knock them out then dragging them into a nearby cave is not very sportsman like.
Join a guild that gives access to sovs for guild use. (*points to forums for info on guilds, worse case, ask around)
But one thing that you should not do is try to guilt other players into doing something other than what they want to do with what they spend their own money on.
Ahh clearly youāve been feeling some social pressure. I mean, Iāve seen a couple of complaints but frankly, they usually come off as over-entitled rants. Some of what gets spewed onto this forum has been, well, pretty amazing.
The P2W and arguments over such āprivilegesā or ābenefitsā have always been mysteriously strident here, for a game that has always been a mid to upper tier priced, pay to play game.
Iād be supportive of the sort of people that want to share their thoughts, or even mention how they want to be completionists, or whatever - but not when they try and make it about what they are, in some way, āowedā.
Itās highly likely that the complainer would never have visited that planet in the first place. Some people see a locked door and just have a problem with it. It doesnāt really matter whatās on the other side.
If it helps anyone feeling pressured to just hear someone else say it - Thatās your world and you do whatever the heck you like with it
Well expressed post and im glad you have written about it. I have rented many sovereigns and to me i think if i pay for it then its my choice to go private if i want whenever it suits me anytime.Ive been told before that going private is not being part of the community. My response was im a solo player but still part of the community in my own way. That person tried to make me feel bad about going private.I actually did feel guilty for that min but then quickly realised ive done nothing wrong.I do have one sovereign on private but have one on public. So i have experienced a bit of pressure from only a few people, but soon new i was in the right.I thought well they can go rent one too or they can visit another sovereign.
It always leaves me a wee bit sad when Iām in an exploration mood and come across a private sovereign portal, but I donāt get annoyed about it. I completely understand that some people need privacy some of the time and if renting their own planet enables that then more power to them.
Itās really nobodyās business what anyone does with their planet.
Iāve never even thought going private is an issue. You are paying for it so itās your call what to do with it. Probably the only time they can be annoying is if thereās too much of them to the point that in a hub, a significant amount of portal is private so they sort of āwaste spaceā (since itās only you who can use it). It can easily be alleviated by having a dedicated private portals section in hubs.
I agree that what you do with your own sovereign is your business and nobody should be harassing sovereign owners over it.
However.
As the introvertiest introvert who ever introverted, I understand wanting to play alone, and often do. I also understand that given the player limits on say, hunting plants, it makes sense to keep permissions closed.
I also believe that locked sovereigns are antithetical to fostering a sense of community. I have 6 sovereigns at the moment and all are open to everyone, people can even plot and build an ugly tower of LED for all I care, as long as I canāt see it from my village on Groddle, heh. I would encourage anyone on the fence about keeping their world private to think about why they need to do so, and also consider if it might bring some other player joy to open it.
I think someone having a private sovereign isnāt a bad thing. For example if I was to get a 6k world I would have to pay $40 a month. That would cost $480 a year to fuel the planet. I look at it as that is a lot of money to spend on a game and that is also a lot of money that could be used for things such as bills or getting things like food. For some people that could result in someone having to sacrifice things just to have a sovereign world. I feel like if someone makes it private that is something they are entitled to since they worked to afford it.
Itās too bad there canāt be more of a middle ground compriseā¦
Letās say I have a planet with 30 regions. I rolled a few really great locations for schnozz berries. So great it put me as the #1 spot in the universe for scnozz berry farming. I donāt want to wake up every morning to empty goop fields where my schnozz berries should be, but donāt want to hoard them all to myself either.
It would be nice if I could open regions 4 and 20 to let people farm there, but all other regions had an invisible barrier (as seen in soooo many āopen worldā games).
Best of both, lots of room for privacy, while also sharing those delicious scnozz berries! Just a pipe dream, but it would be noice!
Well I donāt see why players should have major vote the person who paid for that world they do so for them not for the community as its there hard earn money also if they donāt want players in it thatās there decision. I see no reason at all also they can stop the world if they want too And if they do that will affect boundless home worlds as well because these players that buy the world they are supporting the boundless Server and utility bills also rent bills also wages. Over all with out them we would not be here. So its there decision we are lucky thereās a lot of worlds out there players can edit them and see them.
The thing about Sovās I own several as well. Mine are open to gather resources to all. If someone plots a beacon down that I donāt want it is easy to remove. āSovereign rightsā I do allow campfires as they expire in two hours so not an issue. What I hate about sovereigns is people that leave them visible so you can go there and then once i waste my augment and spend coin to teleport there I canāt do anything. At least make it not visible if one cannot do anything there. If you have a portal to your planet and others cannot do anything there at least they didnāt waste anything except time. I go to planets to get different colors as even with several sovs of my own I can only change the colors once a month.
I agree. Canāt tell you how many times Iāve seen a planet that says ācan editā, spent 15 mins waiting for it to show up in the sky of the nearest planet, used an augment, and alas, canāt editā¦Iām all for private worlds, but the info isnāt always accurate, to my detriment
That is a fantastic idea. If there are singular plots, I donāt know why it would be so very difficult to have control over them. But Iām not a programmer. It very could be a nightmare to do. Love the idea though
The only way I know to do that is to make the beacon so players canāt warp to it. Which you need to set down your world control.
I was not aware you could keep your world from appearing all together. All I was aware of was blocking access at the portals. I figured it still showed up in the sky for anyone thatās looking.
And the message that āthis world is lockedā at portals.
Been playing for over 3k hrs (mind you I idle a LOT) and I still have things Iām not aware of.
So at the world control, go to overview tab. Then to citizens, the first permission if you uncheck it then the ONLY people that can see it in the sky or visit it are the ones you specifically add at the citizens tab. Like from your friends list etc. just use the filter at the top.
