I tried to place 2 mixers next to each other but for some unknown reason when i tried place the blocks for the 2nd mixer the game would not allow it and the placement highlight square turned red when ever the placement cursor was next to the other mixer.
I believe this is normal, and part of the game mechanics.

All of the machines require one air block between them. The spark generator can be placed right next to a machine, though.

If you want them close, you can place them diagonal from each other. That’s what I do for my machines that are not coiled 
You can alternate machines, if that helps.

Imagine if you placed two next to each other and broke one block off them both. You’d have six connected mixer blocks! Mega Mixer!

so basically the 4-block modular crafting stations cannot be built directly next to each other.
