Questions about using portals

I’m new.

I’m thinking of moving my base.

Right now I’m close to Quark on Angel1.

I like that because it’s easy to use the portals etc.

If I build a new permanent base in another location that’s far from Quark, can I build a portal from my new base to my current beacon?

Thanks

Yep you could build portal. It would need Oort shard to open it and keep it running.
You will also need portal conduit

Do most people just build a permanent base on their start world and use portals to go to other planets as needed, or do they move to higher lvl planets as the progress?

Personal preference. I’m still on a T1 (storis)

I just set up small hunting lodges on higher tier worlds that I can use the portal networks to get to that world’s hub then warp to the cabin for 100c from the sanctum.

BTW, You get raw Oort from meteors, which you extract into Oort Shards

For a 1x2 portal (portaling from one place to another on the same world) It takes 50 to open the portal, and one shard per hour.

If you are making 1x2 portals, make sure they face N/S, NOT E/W.

A 1x2 always opens N/S

There isn’t really a straight answer as everyone does different things. I tried sticking to my starting world and there was noone around.
I came on here and found a place to go, that guy was never around…I found another place on another planet same story.
Then I finally found the right place and stayed ever since.
My advice don’t try to put down roots too early…explore and if you are a social player make some connections.

I built a huge castle spent 2 weeks on it and then I realised no one was ever around lol I had to strip a lot out of there as I was still low level. So yeah don’t rush.

And also I kept my main home which is our guild base really on a T1 planet. And have set up outposts mostly for resource collecting on higher tiers

Ironic…but I usually solo in every game I play…even MMOs. When I first started playing Boundless, I did what I usually do: start building my base in the middle of nowhere.

Once I started exploring, I discovered I could buy/sell things in populated areas, I could travel for free using the portal networks, etc. I moved my base near a large city and started earning footfall coin, which allowed me to buy weapons for higher level planets. No regrets. :sunglasses:

I got lucky. I did the same thing you did. Thankfully, I was a long run away from New Oortia, so I was able to use their portals until I finally got my own.

IMO, everyone’s first portal should be to one of your planet’s hubs. It makes your life 100% easier.

I wanted to play this game more or less solo. Had portals to my home planet and store. Everything was good till some guys decided they wanted to climb that prestige rank and saw I had 600k+ prestige so they engulfed me. I picked up and left and ended up in a big town :joy:. Also because of that I never go to Maryx and I never go into the main people of that towns shop where ever they are. I remember their names so always check who owns the store before I step foot in.
Sad for them too since I’m on daily and spend a good amount of coin

I built my main home close to a portal hub for easy access to all the planets.

Then I build outposts on other planets in places I want to go frequently.

I can head from my home to the portal network, take it to the relevant planet, then return to sanctum and warp to my outpost for 100c.

I wouldn’t mess with portals unless you want to motivate other players to move somewhere. The upkeep costs are killer compared to warping to your own outposts.

If you ever want to take a friend to an outpost, bring warp blocks. Still costs 100c but now you both can go thru.

Edit: oh I forgot I save the location of every portal hub on a planet so I can easily reverse the process and get home for 100c

Distance between planets also effects the size needed and oort cost.
When we started out–myself, husband, and a friend–they thought portals were great and made a few local convenience and planet hopping portals. I was the Hunter so I was almost constantly gathering oort to literally fuel their addiction. it burned me out.

Moral to this is don’t over exert yourself if you don’t have to.
We started in the boonies on Angel (well, actually it would have been by two of the top 5 now), and decided to make it more enjoyable we just moved to the planet of our choice (circa) within walking distance of a portal hub.

Planet choice is all about preferences. On a t1 the local wildlife won’t hunt you down unless provoked. T3 introduces new mobs and better resources. T4 has new resources. T5 and t6 have gems and best drop rates.

On a t4, just digging out our base we got so much coal and ores, tech and fossils. We were giddy with excitement. Like being instantly rewarded just for digging the hole that would become home.

Portals are expensive to run, I would save that for later on. Move to a settlement, build you a new base, have it connect to the settlement and you will get some footfall. Not a lot, but any extra coin is good to have. Some settlements have area that you can set out stands. Go and mine and smelt the ores, some don’t like mining and will buy the bars to save them the trouble of mining, or trade it.
Don’t try to do it all the first two weeks, this game is best taken slow, get your bearing, learn what to do, how to handle the critters and then you can go at it.
Unless you are a experienced player I would stay away from anything over level 2 until you have good weapons, Unless you have your skills up it will take you a long time to time. On level 1 and 2 planets I can one strike rocks. Go to a level 5 or 6, and it takes me 6 to 10 strikes with my iron hammers. And I have fast speed but I think molasses would run faster up hill than my hammers would in breaking rocks.
And the mobs, the higher level of planet, the bigger and meaner they are. Level 2 they spit at you. Level 5 they spit bombs at you. Level 6 cuttletrunks can shot lazer beams and have tractor that can grab ahead of you and pull you. Be on a cliff and they will pull you off and you can fall to your death, if on a lava planet, drop you into lava, that is what I have read here somewhere.

Really depends on your play style. I’ve built a few settlements on t3 worlds and found that more entertaining as theres things trying to kill you all the time. breaks up the day with random encounters.

My main settlement is on a T1 world now though, cause I wanted to do the shop thing and its more accessible for more people.
