Race Heights Issues

And also for secret hidden passages too.

…And thus this Shrink Potion becomes a must for any meaningful PvP, because without it you’re just begging to get hit in your 3-block high head.

Advantages and disadvantages of a race should come from their racial properties and abilities, not just from their size. This is a very basic and inevitably boring if the main difference between races is their height.

Shrink potion could have like an effect, when hit effect is lost.

Hey, we should get the artists out in the community to draw characters of different heights interacting with each other.

I like the idea of diversity, imagine everyone in the world driving a Honda, some of you might be fine with Honda and I’m sure a lot of you are about to rage in response to the idea.

Making a good game isn’t always about giving everyone the same playing field, but balancing it out. Maybe big guys can throw little people, for helping them climb up cliffs or tossing them far down a pit to their doom.

Then you would get people who would create tall people to throw/kill small people.

Again i would say it is quite a lot harder to hit the head of a 3 block tall person as a 1 block tall persn than it is for a 3 blocks tall person to hit the head of a 1 block tall person.

And if you put a debuff on people based on their size the balance will change based on that.

I am quite sure size is a racial property… It has its advantages and disadvantages as any other thing.

And you would get people who choose a race with night vision to be able to snipe people from farther away, peopel who choose a race who can glide through the air so they can make drop attacks and people who choose a race with a combat bonus becasue they want to kill people…

Of course people will chosse the buff based on their choosen playstyle.

Everyone was just complaining about small people having smaller hitboxes and being able to tunnel in one block tall areas, I think the big guys deserve some vengeance here for when the cowards leave their little holes.

Being taller or shorter isn’t the Only buff/debug you’d receive. Perhaps taller frames have a slightly harder skin/hide to make the extra hit boxes less of a worry anyhow then.

Already on it.

As a caster role player, I’d prefer the 3block height to gain better line of sight for combat. That being said, I don’t think there is really much point in speculating the differences in multi-height pvp as the devs have already more or less suggested that they’re going away from that concept in favor of having mostly the same heights. Perhaps they release races of similar height first, then post 1.0 try out more variations in height, after they have more concrete data on how it may affect game play and how to balance it. I don’t think there is really any reason to develop every race all at once.

None the less. I hope they go for height variations. The present variations of customizations in games is quite horribly thinning in it’s ability to bring unique character individualism. If Oort were to give a one to three block height variation, or at the very least, allow a slider that let’s you go down to the bottom of the second block’s height, or to it’s top, it would be an… OK compromise. So basically you can be a height anywhere between one and a quarter and two and a quarter blocks high… Which isn’t nearly as fun in my opinion… I’ll keep drawing this picture I’m making… Maybe seeing how diversity can be visually fun even in the most basic ways will help.

And as far as PvP goes, I think there are plenty of pros and cons for each height to take from the whole. ā€œOh he has less hit surface than meā€¦ā€

no for sure. If we have different heights I’d like to see 1.75, 2 and 2.25 as the heights, with the first one being able to crouch down to 1, but buffs for the others to make up for such things…

Compare this to what it would look like if they were the same height. Personally, it’s far more interesting and fun that their size is obviously different.

I am gonna stick with 1.25, 2. 2.75. It’s a little more obvious, but keeps the ratios at least closer to how others keep wanting it. I also think a better buff/trade off would be shorter = faster digging speeds and fitting into one block high tunnels. Where as taller = faster movement and agility. As far as combat, they would simply have to use their buffs to the best of their advantage. Run/dodge or crouch when under attack, able to far more easily dodge with a higher agility and reaction time/ability to retaliate faster, or tunnel and dig, creating a makeshift trench/fortress for yourself and your taller friends.

All in all, I think having both short and tall, 1, 2, and 3 would probably the best or at least the closest to that you can get to that, would encourage a TON more teamwork between the varying height races, having them be easily capable/balanced on their own, or far more effective as a team of all sizes.

A 1 2 3 size range would look kinda terrible imo. I would say we could go as far as 1.5 2 2.5. It doesn’t particularly matter what size a class is as far as the actual height. Yes there should be differences, but height doesn’t mean anything in the end. It’s what abilities these races get in the end that’ll determine how they interact in terms of teamwork or fighting.
Maybe a 1.5 height character can go through 1 height openings if they crouch (and probably faster crouched movement), a 2 height might be most acrobatic, and a 2.5 might get more health and damage or something. In this situation though, none of the heights actually effect the powers the get- it becomes a purlely visual thing. the only other factor would be pvp combat, and if we are to keep things fair, being 3 high makes you hella easy to hit, while be a 1x1x1 block makes you very very very hard to hit, so that would be solved by having closer sizes. I’m sure if you saw it in game a 1.5, 2, 2.5 system would look like a big differences.

That’s what I mean by buffs and debuffs though based on size in a pvp. A high target is easier to hit, yes, but would in place of this disadvantage would have an advantage of movement and stronger skin while a smaller target though harder to hit takes more damage and moves slower.

EDIT: After thinking it over, I think I can loosen up to a 1.5, 2, and 2.5 scaling system. If you take the tallest and place it next to the shortest, there is still plenty obvious enough a size difference to satisfy what I think would work best.

I was also looking forward to different heights!!!..

Let’s just hope that they will keep it on the table when they begin updating past 1.0. Based on where the discussion has gone so far I see it more than likely that they will visit different heights for player characters in the nearer future.

My question is this. Will we have opportunity to switch races/characters at will? It’d kinda suck having to start from scratch with no resources just because you might play while waiting on new customizable character features. As odd as it may sound, I kinda hope we might be able to change our character as completely as we want every month or so. (So people don’t change constantly) and perhaps at a cost of Oort stone or something. This is opposed to having character slots where only progression made on a specific character can be accessed through that one character. I am against this for a game as open and sandboxy as Oort Online.

It depends on the PVP/combat system they make whether it matters or not
