Release 112: Creatures and Characters (and a Q&A)

Combine raw meat and a torch

that would be hillarious though, imagine you could make a meat armor which would increase the agro range of all meat eating enemies by like 7000%, let the man challenges begin!

hmm, when keeping the real funny part out of the pic the idea is cool indeed … a lure armor that let hostile predators attack you first … would be cool for combat tactics when playing in a team

Personally, I’m calling the non-goat things what attack us “shooty-snoots.”

Its kinda like a bunny and a goat…
Boatty
Gunny
etc…

I just hope you will not go for the Minecraft cooking, where you cook meat and melt iron with the same device

Well we have to call them something, the spitter has a name.

“Spitter” just comes off as vulgar to me.

It adds flavor.

None of this helped unfortunately :frowning:

Since I had plenty of time to test the new features of this update (it luckily lined up with my last week of summer vacation) I´ve plenty of feedback on the new features:

Things that don’t quite work as expected / bugs:

  • Smart block placement

It seems like it doesn’t work if the angle with which you are looking at the surface is too small. Which makes the new feature practically unusable when you build small towers or thin walls.

  • The x/y-axis of the camera control is inverted while you are in “front” 3rd person view (not sure if this is intended or not).

  • The cursor doesn’t always lock into screen center position when you leave the inventory.

  • Your view is always locked into straight horizontally when you hit “t” to chat. I don’t know if this is intended but I think it would be better if chatting wouldn’t change the angle of your camera.

Things that I dislike:

  • The new item-swapping that automatically swaps inventory places. I think the old or “standard” one that swapped between the inventory and your “hand” was more comfortable.

Things in the new update that I think should be changed:

  • The increased arm movement while you are sprinting seems a bit underdone.

  • The spitter creature should get an extended range once it is engaged. At the moment it is pretty easy to exploit the creatures AI by slightly moving back, which forces the creature to preposition itself, a slightly increased range once the creature has “taken position” would fix that.

(A short GIF to showcase what I mean. The beam continues for a short duration even though the target ran out of the initial range of the beam)

  • The disappearing hotbar should be a toggle able option [disappearing/ never disappearing]

  • Although I love the shape of the head variations I have to say that I think that they are a bit oversized and should be made a bit smaller.

  • Instead of being able to push (hostile) creatures around they should act as wall for you and vice versa.

  • And please give us back the “garbage” slot in the inventory

Things I´d like to see added:

  • You should be able to remove items from the “crafting bench” to your inventory by simply right clicking on them and not only by “drag&drop”.
  • You should also be able to craft items by using “drag&drop” in the crafting menue and not only by clicking “craft object” which immediately puts the crafted item in the first inventory slot.
  • You should be able to switch between inventory tabs by using “a” and “d”.
  • Smart stacking of dropped blocks (like in Mineraft). This system automatically gatherd items to one stack if you dropped similar items in the same location. This could also help the performance (at least it did when they introduced it in Minecraft).

Things that I absolutely love about the new update:

  • The “damage memory” system on blocks (although I´m really curious why you went for 8 seconds).
  • “Dancing” with the new “Spitter” creature. You did an amazing job on the AI, I think this will be one of the things I tell my friends about when I recommend them Oort.
  • That you see all the potential crafting recipes as soon as you place something into the crafting slot.

I wanna take the chance (I finally found the time and muse to play Oort again) to say how much I enjoy the game and especially the new interface.
Although minor and major bugs (borgs) are there, it is beautifully made. My pc doesn’t get any faster and is hell off a grumplord. So maybe on a better machine it could run smooth. I remember The Marvellous Miss Take being highly vivid in its musical style and very polished although I believe it is the better portable game. The interface/menu in Oort is really cool and the friendly colour selection is also so pleasing. Happy I found this game.
