Soloing high tier meteors. Slingbow build or gold fist build?

Do you guys prefer a slingbow build or a fist build when doing low level meteors on a T5/T6 planet? I have issues tanking with my gold fist build when each type of creature spawns rather than dealing with one type. The combination of aerial attacks from spitter bombs and Cuttles along ground attack from wildstock is too much. I’m maxed tank with resist in the 4s. Using damage epic.

With HP food, I can get my HP up to 18-20K. I can handle a T1 meteor most of the time. But T2 is rough. I already know how to manipulate terrain and try to do so when possible but it’s not an i-win button. I use a forged Gold fist.

I prefer not to use more cleanse points and to switch to a slingbow build. Thoughts?

I use both. My primary weapon of choice is gold fist but I use the slingbow for far away or when I’m on a block And need the elevation.

I use fists but they are kinda slow to fire.

@Molav- Just an FYI. I use a forged gold fist with action speed boon. Combined with a few points in dexterity, and it’s amazing. I never want to go back to a regular gold fist again. It’s like going from a Mercedes back down to a Volvo. And who drives a Volvo? Nobody. And throw in super fast brew and you can clear out spawns with ease.

I sell the forged gold fist at my shop.

Yeah, I got a slingbow as backup but I can’t afford to put any points into slingbow skills. So my damage is nominal. I’m better off going with bombs than using a bow from range

Once you start crafting gem slings they will be the choice for end game as fists are limited to gold only right now and even with forging they will require a lot more to get them on par plus their firing speed and range can be issues for meteorite hunts.

Plus rapid fire only works with slingbows so less hurt fingers.

@deenw Where do I find your shop?

It depends. Raw base damage favors the golden fist, even with full slingbow damage spec, taking at least charged shots to get somewhat on par.

Slingbows are much faster, of course, but smaller individual hits. So, it comes down to overcoming mob armor / resistance, and for that I have a feeling that the raw damage from fists is a bit better.

My hunter build is slingbows / max armor / max health / damage epic, no resists at the moment (12 points tied into atmospheric protection until I manage to fill the other two skill sets), and even then I use my forged golden fist more often than my forged gem sling.

I do however switch to the slings when things get out of fist range, as well as when a wildstock wave forces me to grapple up (after many deaths caused by my fist breaking the block I was grappled to despite the fact that I’m aiming down and the block is above my head).

Edit: That being said, I haven’t managed to forge +damage on bows yet, so I’m not sure if that would scale better than on fists. The ones I’m using are a super long range sniper ruby sling for roadrunner hunting and a super fast ruby sling for everything else.

I’ll use shielding pies and health pots with maxed defense (except the epic def, i use the damage epic) Everything’s easy enough to deal with unless i get stupid…Which usually happens when a good song on my playlist hits and I start jumping into danger, all fists of fury like Bruce Lee

This is the key to the gold fist. Specifically, you want to leverage crit chance and crit effect traits to allow you to one shot high tier creatures. I can one shot most of the Cuttles. And 2 or 3 shot elite wildstock and spitters. Overall damage becomes irrelevant if you can one or two shot creatures. Doing so allows me to achieve a couple of goals:

  • Clear spawns rapidly before they all gang up on me with a combination of ground and aerial attacks
  • Reduce wear and tear on the weapon thus giving me more bang for the buck.

I don’t use forged slingbows so I’m unsure as to what damage they get? But I can get 15k crit damage with my skills and a forged gold fist. I can do over 20k crit damage if I drink a strength brew.

The more I think this through, the more I realize that using a gold fist setup forces me to commit to the fight. I can’t really skirt or fight from range like I would with a bow. So perhaps I have to play with bombs and bomb augments more by blasting large holes into the ground.

@molav. It’s Deen’s Kitchen. Biitula Hub.Top floor. Portal is next to Castle Black. There are a variety of fists on sale but they’re a combination of boons including crit chance, crit effect, damage, and fast action speed.

Yeah, the golden fists that I’m using at the moment are +914 damage (total tooltip damage in spec says 5461) +50% critical effect +1400 durability

The bows are 2565 tooltip damage, with +30 action speed, +21m max range, +durability on the sniper, and +40 action speed, +45 projectile speed, +durability on the general use one.

Without brews, the fists crit for 12.800ish damage, and they crit pretty often, so that’s what I’ve been using the most.

I just noticed your earlier statement that you don’t have any resist? And yet you’re able to survive using a gold fist on high level planets?

I’ve just started a hunter. Any advice on skill traits to go for if I want to use fists?

Yea bombs (teehee autocorrect changed to boobs, just saw it) should work too! Use augments and buffs too. Soon gona need to carry too much gear to have any slots left for loot! Lol

Depends on what you mean by ‘survive’.

If I’m actively hunting meteors (I can only reasonably solo tiers 1-2 and even that is iffy, in tier 5+ planets) I can somewhat make up the lack of resists using the tier 5 heal over time brew when under half health, and resist foods, but I still die sometimes.

Tier 3-4 planets its pretty chill to solo with my spec even without brews and foods so that’s where I usually do most of my meteor hunting.

Edit: Keep in mind that I do have the armor skills up to 5, just not the X% chance to completely ignore damage ones. I’ll grab those with the points that I’m currently using for atmospheric protection once I fill out the other 2 skill sets.

Dexterity helps with reload of the fists. Agility helps with crit chance. Each point in grapple mastery helps give an extra 5% in damage to the fist.

Each point in agility gives you an extra 2% points in critical chance. So max agility of 8/8 gives an extra 16% in critical chance. This is more useful to the gold fist rather than the iron fists since gold’s primary trait is critical damage and critical chance. So if you use a non forged gold fist, your base crit chance and crit damage is 50% and 75%, respectively. Add on max agility, you now have a 66% chance to get a critical hit. That is where crit damage can then come into play. This trait goes even higher with a forged gold fist. If you can’t afford a forged gold fist, eat a critical loaf which gives an 80% buff modifier to crit chance. So now you go from 66% to 78% crit chance.

So a natural skill progression would be something to the effect of the following. Bear in mind that I don’t know what else you’re skilling for on the same toon;

  • Put points in power and vitality first
  • Priortize with grapple mastery next. This is helpful on higher tier worlds with tough terrain and large mountains
  • Then dexerity, agility, and attributes.

A decent mid skill build with a non forged gold fist will allow you to solo level 3 meteors on a Level 3 planet.

Once you have coins, you can start to splurge on brews and forged items. Durability epic is great when you start to use forged items because it reduces wear and tear.

Did they finally fix it? Last time I tested grapple mastery had no effect whatsoever on fist damage (despite what the skill tooltip says)

Yep. Several of us have tested after the patch from 2 weeks ago

Well, then my fist damage numbers above should be noted to be in a skill set with zero points in grapple mastery.

With it fixed I think grapple skill will make fists even more worthwhile.

Thanks for this. Will definitely take your advice. Currently putting him through a crash course in mass crafting all the excess blocks from my miner to get him up to speed.
