Tameable pet companions

why eggs? im thinking of taming them in the wild.

because there are multiple ways of taming animals and some have higher sucess rates. If you catch an animal the rate is lower than if you hatch it by your own.

but… mammals…

I think its a nice concept though, i just think that you should catch a pup and then train it up from ground in that way, could be really cool if you could see it grow.

eggs are a good idea too, but when you pick up an egg a counter should start for like 2 days, so you have 2 days to find a person with enough taming to train the creature that comes out, if you dont then the egg will just hatch and a young lizard or whatever would spawn and be lost since there wasnt a tamer nearby.

Of course mammals don’t lay eggs^^ (maybe one but that’s a special one xD)

Maybe the egg could just go bad after a while because you didn’t give it the right treatment. And if you do and no tamer is around your idea takes place.

that i like. its just to limit it so people cant gather 100 eggs to sell whenever they feel like it.

yea that would be annoying

I love this idea SO MUCH. Familiars would be a great addition. Here’s what I would suggest:

  • No more than a handful of tamable creature types
  • Find different tamable creatures on each world
  • Familiars are different than mounts or summons, they should be companions, not vehicles or weapons. Helpers, functionally and emotionally. So a glowing sprite? Perfect. Domesticated wolf? Cool. Rhinoceratops? Not so much.

And as a possibility, when considering the AI of such familiars:

  • Agro, the horse from Shadow of the Colossus, made a great companion, partially because he kind of had a mind of his own. Controlling him was at times clunky, and when dismounted, he’d often wander off, or run away if you were engaged in battle. You’d have to whistle to call him back.
  • So, to apply this example – consider giving familiars some personality. They wander off, they run ahead, they stop to look at things. I don’t know if this is the right idea, but it would definitely add some richness to the gameplay experience (but, as with Agro, some frustration as well).

You really learn to love your felynes in monster hunter bacause they have their own personality and often stop to collect stuff(they’re really cute) i would love to see companions like the felynes in oort

What’s the reason for only a handful of tamable creatures? And are your familiars just a subcategory of tamable creatures like mounts and other helping animals?

Some kind of AI would be nice though. Maybe not something annoying like wandering into a cave all the time.^^

Great question. I love a healthy dose of whimsical mystery in my games, and being able to tame any and every creature you see just seems overkill to me. Having a limited number of tamable creatures adds some richness to the Oort fauna. Some other advantages of limiting familiar-enabled creatures:

  • Each tamable creature should offer a specific benefit to the player. Light source, extra inventory space, mild defense, detecting danger, harvest resources, etc. Being able to tame any creature means that every creature would need to have some kind of useful benefit, and that seems like overcomplicating things to me. (Why would you ever tame a seagull? Or a cricket? Or a mastodon? Those creatures have better uses as food or mounts)
  • The tamability of a creature should be obvious by their appearance and behavior. So even though there are fewer tamable types, it’s not like you’d have to guess which ones are tamable or not. (“How strange! That small ferret is digging up turnips! I will tame him, and he will dig turnips for me. Also, I will name him Pabu.”)

so instead of letting people tame stuff and give them a choice of what they want you want to make a few so everybody run around with the same fammiliar? that sounds horrible in my ears

Well I would tame a cricket just because it’s a cricket. Not every tameable thing should have a purpose. Why do you tame a cat? Because it’s fluffy and cute. Nothing helpful there.

And a mount is also a tamable creature, just like creatures you tame as food source.

What about making all creature tameable but making some super rare tameable creatures that gives special buffs or provide things like a light source or helps carrying items?

the more helpful, the more difficult it should be. And the rarer they should be.

@KuroKuma Agreed - more helpful = more rare. Also, no problem with taming crickets/cats/pigs/squirrels, just make sure they give some benefit to the player.

@Zouls No, I said a handful of tamable creatures per world. 3-6 familiar types per world X 40+ worlds = a LOT of tamable creatures. Sure, some of them will be variants of each other (blue feathers vs green feathers), there’d be ones with unique abilities that can only be found on a certain worlds, as well.

that’s exactly what I mean, why do you need a benefit? Why not just tame them for taming sake?

Honestly while I like the idea of pets
In my observations of video games they only come in 3 categories

  1. OP as F**K
  2. Cute but useless because if you take them away from home they insta-die
  3. Pokemon (and thus used more as a weapon rather than a companion)

then let’s do it better in Oort!

As for benefits similar animals could have similar benefits just with different stats

and special ones could be slightly different

Small birds could help map makers or point out danger like a scout so they could have a use no matter what

Also what players have to pick and choose from is up to what the devs make some animals will be unique and different then real life ones and might not even have some of the animals your worried about

Remembers me of Ultima Online where finaly all the mages hat their pet dragons (which were so large that you could not see anything on the screen if they met in the middle of the town  )
