The <name> Exchange (Shops) for newbies

Hi there and welcome to boundless.

This is a post on how most of the “Exchange” shops work.

A Exchange shop is mostly focused on recourses, based on cheapness and surviving of the shop.
Meant so that players can sell to make coin and buy what they need without the need for trading.
A Exchange owner does service the shop by moving items from baskets to stands and coin from stands to baskets.
Might even add from own reserves.
The exchange basically can only sell what it has and buy if it has the coin or space to do so.

It is the intent of a exchange to buy and sell for the same price.
That said if it does exactly that, it won’t survive for long.
Why not? Taxes. Plain and simple.

Example.
The exchange buys your item @100c but pays 10% taxes.
Meaning you will get 100c but the exchange actually has to pay 110c for that item.
Also when you buy a item from the exchange @100c the exchange has to pay 10% taxes on the 100c.
Meaning you pay 100c and the Exchange receives 90c for the sale of that item.

Further an exchange has to almost always make sure it isn’t cheaper than every one else.
If it is to cheap it will be sold out and barely get new items to sell.
Example
Exchange buys bone @1c and sells @2c but the shop next to it buys it @5c.
Bones will disappear from the Exchange and every one will sell their bones to the shop that pays 5c. So the exchange has to go up in price (if needed).

So in hindsight a Exchange shop isn’t the easiest shop to keep going.
And there are no rules on how it has to work.

Please keep this in mind before you complain to an exchange owner. And remember even if a shop focuses on resources it doesn’t automatically make it an exchange shop (unless it’s named or pointed out as one by the owner).

Hope this post is helpful and tells you a little bit about how a Exchange shop works. If you have further questions about this topic feel free to ask them here.

If i mist something to @ feel free to point it out to.

Out of curiosity, does anyone know where taxes go? Do they disappear into the void? A friend theorised taxes might be paid to the viceroy of a planet but I have no idea if this is true? I mean I’d like to think it funnels back into the economy somewhere.

They are not going to viceroys pocket.

They just go to emptyness. No one gets those

Well think about like InRealLife…
You have a shop that is specialized in certain things(lets say tools) and has various items from that section and they are selling those cheaper than other,
but they do have one line of various items like tape, pipes etc that are priced higher than in your local supermarket.

If this makes any sense.

Some shops specialize something and can keep prices low cause they do just one thing.

I give you example.

@AeneaGames has forging shop… she also buys things… no way those are the best prices in the game but i do sell my stuff to her cause i know shes reliable forger and pretty cheap one too.

Can confirm that i’m victory and didn’t notice any change when i lost it.

Did someone complain about an exchange?

I’d say at least last time I checked which has been awhile. Most of her prices were the best. With a few slightly lower but not many. Plus to find the absolute best youd have to be sound a lot of hunting.

And the Ultima exchange has fair prices too. That’s Tun by Larky.

No complaints just some information for new players. As i see several posts coming up with different questions about resources. How and where to get them.

It is a good point to add about the difference of an exchange and a shop. And also to know that an Exchange mostly only adjusts prices when a random shop does the same as it. (With part of the basic resources.) like my bone mention. If the bones stop coming the Exchange has to find out why and if it seems the “shop” next to it or what ever is buying and selling that basic resource for a higher price. Then the exchange has to adjust the pricing to avoid becoming obsolete for that product. Because if an Exchange can’t provide the basics to crafters (most of the time) they have to go and look somewhere else to get the materials.

Also to note if a “forge shop” next to the exchange is for example buying the products for a higher price or is cheaper it won’t affect an exchange as most of the resources will already be used for crafts that won’t be sold as base products. Thus keep resources coming and going. For other players that need them.

The first and foremost objective of an exchange is to provide a service and most of them don’t really make a big profit. As it would defeat the purpose of a “trade” shop.
