Those who are ok at building but not great

So, I’ve been kinda cold shouldered to boundless as of late. Not in a way i don’t like it,it’s still an amazing game and will not cease to be anything it isn’t. Just in the way that i haven’t been playing much as of late nor keeping up to date (although not much seems to have sprung up since my last comments).
Reasons for this are varied, and whilst i find it hard sometimes to find time to play, another considerably large factor is creations. I’ve seen some amazing things built and I kinda then go off on a tangent and think I could maybe build something nice, but of course I’m the type that jumps in too fast and then drowns before I can keep my head above the water.
Creation games have always been my favorite genre but my problem is I jump too from one to the other far too fast and leave the other behind. Taking LBP for example I wanted to learn all the insides out of logic, which I actually did and could thus far understand a good deal of how contraptions worked but then applying that to my own creations was more difficult. So i would quickly scramble together a level, with basics and see how it would do, not too great as you would imagine. It’s not that I expected it to be great, I knew it was halfhearted.
Same applies to my most recent thread of dwarven statue, for anyone that seen it, you can back me up in saying it wasn’t exactly the best statue out there  .The thing is though i built version 1 in like, what 30 mins and at first it was just for fun but then I decided to see what other people thought. So i posted it and got reviews back which lead to version 2, which I was so excited about that i built it in, yep you guessed it under 60 mins. So I don’t know if it’s because I’m not talented and i should stop kidding myself or I just don’t spend enough time.
I suppose all this wasn’t really necessary for what I’m about to ask, but hey what can you expect from such a drama queen? Whilst I am well aware of what this game has, and will have to offer is there much in this for someone who isn’t exceptionally good at building? At this you may wonder, “Wait, he’s played this game hasn’t he, so why’s he asking us?” And your right in thinking so, and yes I have played it to answer your question but to be honest i never really got anywhere further than exploring other servers and creations and crafting a grappling hook.So I ask:

  • is there much in this for someone who isn’t exceptionally good at building?

  • how captivating is the building in this game, enough to stop me from jumping to another?

  • is building easy to pick up and become half decent at, eventually?

First off, I don’t think cold-shoulder is the expression you want since that makes it sound like the game has been ignoring you.

Building is all about your imagination and your commitment to your builds. If you don’t have the commitment to see a vision come to life, that’s ok (neither do I). But, Boundless is introducing blueprint blocks so you don’t have to worry about that! All you have to do upon launch is hire a builder to build a blueprint of something you want and then you can gather the resources and whatnot and watch it come to life!

Beyond that, the game is going to have Titans, Oort Temples, various worlds and economies to master, livestock to tame, progression, crafting, exploring, etc. Building, just like in minecraft, is a fun way to pass the time but not actually key to progressing through the different tiers of worlds or gathering resources or anything.

Building is the thing to do at the moment. To give you a little insight on the areas that are important to us that we’re working on at the moment (which I hope will appeal to non-builders):

  • Overall economy systems
  • Progression, Classes, Professions
  • Weapon/Tool/Equipment/Ring Forging
  • Consumable item and ammo Forging

Not all of these are coming soon, but putting in place the structure for these is definitely getting me excited about the non-building future of Boundless

I can’t help but ask you what kind of classes you (the dev team) have in mind?
The restrictive kind WoW has for example, where your actions are defined by the class,or an open kind, I don’t really know a game that has those except maybe Runescape, where you are a class that is defined by your actions.

It’s also ok if you can’t really tell us about it at the moment.
I’m just curious because that could make or break the game for me.

Essentially what we’ve decided on at the moment is class creation. [X] specialist skill paths in total, choose [Y] to create a class.

(Not really a mega secret, I want to share but it’s a really big system and I’ve not gotten round to sharing it internally with the techies in any depth yet. Once I’ve done that I’ll do the post I keep promising!)

So one character can not learn everything? Is that correct?

Yup, that’s a specific anti-goal for us. Players should be able to be ‘specialists’, and at the highest point in progression players should be able to complement each other.

Sorry, I guess I’m not the best at choosing the right words for the situation. Anyways thank you for your reply and that does sound awesome considering blueprints, had no idea they worked that way. Thanks again

Love the sound of blacksmithing

Well, at the moment I can say I really hate the thought of that system.
But I’ll wait until a more elaborate post of you on which I can base my opinion. Be it the same or another one.

Maybe you (the dev team) came up with a solution that such a system doesn’t totally suck.

How does such a system suck? Not being able to master everything is awesome! It makes people work together wich (for me) is the core idea of this game; Teamwork

Sounds quite promising.
Are there any games out there whose progression system is roughly comparable to what you have planed? (Just so we can get an idea of what is planed until you are able to post something detailed)

So will that mean that people can have more than one character, or will they need to ‘unlearn’ if they want to choose a different set of professions?

It sucks because I hate to be locked out of something just because I do something else more or better.

Why should I not be able to make a sword just because I’m a fighter? Why should I not be able to make potions just because I’m a Fletcher? I might not be able to make the quality of things someone dedicated can but I see no reason to be locked out.

It should just take a really really long time if you want to master multiple things. If you want, give an Exp-gain-debuff for all the other professions if you’ve already mastered one. Or something like that. But don’t lock people out of things. Especially if you can only have on character, which I hope for.

But that’s a topic on it’s own.
As I said I’ll just wait and hope their system doesn’t suck like every other MMOs that has classes.

You must really hate living in general. Olympic figure skaters aren’t exactly pro footballers. Leading scientists aren’t exactly leading composers of music. People in life typically specialize…

Also please remember that the forums are meant to be a place for positive or constructive criticism. There are ways to tell Ben you’re displeased or have other thoughts without telling him that his system "totally suck"s…he (and the rest of the dev team) are really working their hardest to create a game that they can be proud of and that we (and future players) will have a blast delving into.

Nope, it doesn’t suck ^^
It sucks in your oppinion. Two completely different things
With that out of the way I don’t think you’ll be locked out completely. At least @ben never said that ^^ It would also kinda ruin the sandbox, and we all know the sandbox is important to the devs.

I’ll just wait for more info and then judge if I like it or not ^^

I sometimes do, yes but not because of those reasons.

To stay with your examples. Even an olympic figure skater can play football with his friends and a lot of scientists were good or at least average musicians.
I did NOT say anything against specialisation. But I did say something against locking people out of things.

Also i didn’t say his system sucks. I even stressed I’d wait to judge until he could explain the system they have in mind in detail.
And I gave a constructive alternative for this system.

Also I know they’re working really hard to make this game the best game. Exactly because of that I’ll always tell them when I think something could be better or should be changed entirely.

@Predatoxic
Yea, normally I normally say it that way but with this I have a really strong opinion and I firmly believe that classes suck.
Anyway, if he says a character can not do everything then I assume we’ll be locked out if stuff. I can’t imagine another way.

But I’ll wait and see as you do. There’s no sense in discussing an idea that wasn’t even properly introduced.

This is exactly why I shouldn’t tease stuff we’re working on.

There’s a lot of assumptions there, most of which I think you’ll agree with us on! Hold tight and I’ll try get some more detailed shared in the coming week.

Yea, I know. Funny thing is, this was also the reason I said I’d be ok if you didn’t share any details.
But good to hear we get some information soon.

Well I would classify myself in that group but I still rather like to brainstorm and come up with ideas for buildings and and mroe simple things (I helped with the roads in Kovah capital that was fun as heck)

It is a rather minecraft system so I think it pretty much depends on how good you are at addepting the voxel style.

I feel it really depends on how it is done, I rather like the jack of all trades master of some which some games go for. Which opens up most of the possibilities for the player but the swordsman are not going to make the most advanced potions (though stuff like high level healign potions is possible with enough work)
