@majorvex was asking on a thread about recording players doing work on buildings, workshop and other.
Was reading some of the replies, and the one from @the-moebius where he mentioned he was setting one up of where I remarked on what I had learned of what I should have done had me thinking, what tips could those who have workshops give to those who want to build one but had no idea of what to do or what is needed.
So, experienced players, those who have a workshop what tips would you give. And what would be different from the player who has one just for personal usage and one who has built one to make and sell forged items.
For me, it is just personal, I can’t say a year from now I won’t feel confident enough to make and sell, but present day, no way.
Going to try to make this short, wish me luck, LOL

Space, you will need 7 blocks for each machine and the coils, so figure out how much room you will need. And height, plan for having more than 7 blocks high, look to have 10 or 12 coils for regular machines and 24 coils for the centraforge.

number of machines, I have learned I needed a lot more than what I thought and I make for my personal usage and give a few to some friends. But I should have planned for three extractors, two refineries, two workbenches, one mixer and definitely one centraforge and may later on put another one down.
3a) storage. You will need to gather a lot of materials (mats) unless you plan on buying all that you need and that can get expensive. I do my storage boxes in sets of nine, that way I can open on the middle one and see all nine storage bins. Personal choice, but going from that, I have 3 sets of nine and need to add a couple more. Two holds the raw materials and one is to hold the finished mats, the glass jars with the various gums, compounds, pastes and such needed in forging.
3b) You will also need to have storage for the tools and weapons you will be forging to put into the centraforge and one for the finished items, after you forge that hammer you don’t want to stick it with the unforged ones. And for the failed ones, you want to keep them separate from the good ones. So, that can be more storage sets.

ores. You will need to smelt the raw ores to bars. So that means you will need not only the ores, but what is needed to make alloys. I have three and really need to add two more. I see this as a separate area, so two sets for my ores and bars. You will need a mixer to make the alloys, so be prepared to have a couple of those and it would be good to have them on 6 or 7 coils, they will get done faster.

Misc storage, I didn’t take into account, and should have, of the items needed. You see in the shop the glass jars for the paste, gums and such. You have to make those and you will need Lots and Lots of glass to make all that you need, so have room for the sand, soil, glass, coal and other items for the furnaces and for the spark generators that will be needed.
It is better to have too much room than not enough, so when you plan it out, think ahead and go for more room. I know I am forgetting some tips that I have learned, what I should have done that would have made it easier. Will be updating it sooner than later.
So, those who have been making forged tools/weapons, what tips can you give to those who ae contemplating setting up a workshop?
