Tips for players who want to build a forge workshop

@majorvex was asking on a thread about recording players doing work on buildings, workshop and other.

Was reading some of the replies, and the one from @the-moebius where he mentioned he was setting one up of where I remarked on what I had learned of what I should have done had me thinking, what tips could those who have workshops give to those who want to build one but had no idea of what to do or what is needed.

So, experienced players, those who have a workshop what tips would you give. And what would be different from the player who has one just for personal usage and one who has built one to make and sell forged items.

For me, it is just personal, I can’t say a year from now I won’t feel confident enough to make and sell, but present day, no way.

Going to try to make this short, wish me luck, LOL

  1. Space, you will need 7 blocks for each machine and the coils, so figure out how much room you will need. And height, plan for having more than 7 blocks high, look to have 10 or 12 coils for regular machines and 24 coils for the centraforge.

  2. number of machines, I have learned I needed a lot more than what I thought and I make for my personal usage and give a few to some friends. But I should have planned for three extractors, two refineries, two workbenches, one mixer and definitely one centraforge and may later on put another one down.

3a) storage. You will need to gather a lot of materials (mats) unless you plan on buying all that you need and that can get expensive. I do my storage boxes in sets of nine, that way I can open on the middle one and see all nine storage bins. Personal choice, but going from that, I have 3 sets of nine and need to add a couple more. Two holds the raw materials and one is to hold the finished mats, the glass jars with the various gums, compounds, pastes and such needed in forging.

3b) You will also need to have storage for the tools and weapons you will be forging to put into the centraforge and one for the finished items, after you forge that hammer you don’t want to stick it with the unforged ones. And for the failed ones, you want to keep them separate from the good ones. So, that can be more storage sets.

  1. ores. You will need to smelt the raw ores to bars. So that means you will need not only the ores, but what is needed to make alloys. I have three and really need to add two more. I see this as a separate area, so two sets for my ores and bars. You will need a mixer to make the alloys, so be prepared to have a couple of those and it would be good to have them on 6 or 7 coils, they will get done faster.

  2. Misc storage, I didn’t take into account, and should have, of the items needed. You see in the shop the glass jars for the paste, gums and such. You have to make those and you will need Lots and Lots of glass to make all that you need, so have room for the sand, soil, glass, coal and other items for the furnaces and for the spark generators that will be needed.

It is better to have too much room than not enough, so when you plan it out, think ahead and go for more room. I know I am forgetting some tips that I have learned, what I should have done that would have made it easier. Will be updating it sooner than later.

So, those who have been making forged tools/weapons, what tips can you give to those who ae contemplating setting up a workshop?

I just rebuilt my workshop. It isn’t locked and it is very compact given the number of machines. Anyone can visit SHAMELESS on Grovidias Te to check it out and take measurements. Store on floors 1 and 2. Factory on basement 1, storage in basement 2.

It’s all on 5x5 plots but with walls that’s only 38 blocks interior space. Figure access corridors, that reduces it down to 34. It’s very challenging!

I also built on a body of water so I have unlimited water in the basement, kinda neat.

Happy to answer questions or show why I did a design a given way.

Edit: portal available from PS hub. Check post history for shop deets.

Where are you located at on Grovidias Te? What city, settlement and what would be a good way to get there?

I know that a lot of players use PS, but some use Ultima so how can players who want to see your setup and even check out your products get to your shop?

I’m gonna watch this thread. I love seeing how other people design their workshops. Anyone that wants to see mine is free to come to Kindred Bay and look for the giant white gate build. My workshop is underground, called Mad Mag’s. Portals directly to it from Duskmoor’s new portal area and The Hunt Hive.

Edit: Kindred Bay is also now the main hub for Sorissi in Ultima so feel free to find it through there. Just come through the portal and head straight.

I have 3 of each machine. 2 stacked on top of each other with coils above and below. One in the ground behind them. Storage areas for each machine behind them as well as some directly below. Extra storage on the opposite end of the build. Its a spacious area but still pretty compact imo.

I normally keep the machines locked behind a door but I’m gonna unlock them for anyone looking for inspiration.

I’m on my 4th base now.

First was a basic ‘box’, I then extended to add a shop and a little portal hub.

Then @AeneaGames invited me to build a base at New Leyden, so built a dome there. I kinda liked it, took me ages to complete with all the chiselling required, it was 90x90 blocks at its widest, and about 12 high.

Once I finished I decided to build a base in the sky, a torus (kinda like the space station from ‘2001’).

I liked both the designs for these, but they were impractical, as the storage we have doesn’t work with round shapes very well, very inefficient use of space.

And then drama happened.

That, and hints of farming coming in the not tor distant future () led me to build a new base on Alcyon.

So I have a 20x20 plot area that is 3 plots high. Just over 1 plot is above ground, which has been levelled and ‘turfed’ in anticipation of farming, there is a building at one end with my portals and space for potential farming ‘equipment’.

Below, is storage and machines. Large central aisles, 12 blocks wide, form a cross. My machines are arranged down these aisles. In the centre of the cross is forge, and next to it in each compass direction is a refinery. Then as you travel away in each direction there is 8 of each other machine, all with full 24 coils.

Storage is in the ‘quarters’. Separated into blocks, each block has 8 3X3 storage sections (4 wide, 2 high) which is then mirrored behind (back to back). There are 3 in a row in each quarter, and 9 or 10 rows.

Ugh, sorry, I just realised how horrible my description is!

I’ll post some pics in a bit.

But my advice is, whatever amount of machines and storage units you think you will need, double it and build that!

pictures in here, feel free to ask any questions

I will post some pictures of my current workshop, forging area and storage too once I get back home in a few hours!!

And here they are!

My forging corner:

Lots of extractors! To make those forging mats with, workbenches to make the tools.

Storage on the main crafting floor, this is in the forging area:

(I rather like the half hidden shop stands under the storage, also the signs are on top more storage blocks)

Generic crafting area, gems compacting, oort extracting, alloy mixing, more tools making:

The food and brew section, lots of mixers and extractors:

The brick factory, but also for making deco marble/gravel/rocks/wood/etc.:

At the front of the workshop I have these little islands with more storage, mostly for crafted goods (more need to be added tho):

At the lowest level (also the biggest floor there is) I have planetary storage, this is the exo planet area:

And on the other side of that floor I have the regular planetary storage (many more need to be added):

Here I like the crafting tables in the floor, I was always searching in which crafting table I had crafted certain stones, now I just craft them in the table at the storage. Also ideal for sorting afterwards!

This is still a bit of a WIP, need to add more exo and normal planet storage, make the workshop a bit nicer, the stairs are in a weird spot and need to be changed, add more storage at the front, finish the roof (it’s half done on inside) add poles and beams so the lights seem attached to something instead of just floating, etc., etc.

I dig the color coding! (no pun intended)

@AeneaGames took me on a tour of her work area, and I am still in awe at her set-up.

I’m working on changing mine around as I need to get it better organized, need to go and look at some others. Don’t have the room that Aenea has to maks such a grand scale, nor do I need that much room.

How she can do what she does I don’t know, I couldn’t do 1/10 of what she does so again, in awe of her commitment to this game, her shops, market, and customers.

Yeah, wow, that’s a very impressive setup @AeneaGames!

That’s a lot of machines. I have 3 forges and 2 extractors together in my forge area and I mainly use just one forge. 6 farms, 3 shops (soon 4 in nova) and still use 1 forge mostly

But making and selling forged items along with food and brews are her livelihood. That is her source of income and she is in very high demand for her great products and great prices.

I have one centraforge also, and am in the processing of going from one extractor, refinery, one workbench to three extractors, two refineries and two workbenches. I’m sick and tired of having to load them all up and then look at how long it will take and find out I that I have three hours wait,

Have to make the bases, pastes, gums and more, then make all the different ingredients. Have to make the tools, axes, shovels, hammers, and then there are the slingbows, fists, grapples, and they all take time.

And I am doing that for the small amount of forging I do for me and a friend and making the boons, pastes, gums and such that I am selling. I get frustrated at the long waits.

I can’t even imagine how many tools and weapons she makes a day. A whole LOT ! !

Well, I find it handy to have different forges set up with different forging mats for different ways of forging. The method and mats I use for metal alloy tools is different for gem tools for instance and I use another for things like wayfarer totems. But what I also do is use 3 to 4 quickly in a row so I get 3/4 batches done in 1 hour…

That’s why I also divide crafting mats over the many extractors!

Agree wholeheartedly,

Spent most of the day digging out more rock in the basement to expand it to twice it’s size and another level that will let me have more room. When I am making the mats for the forge and I have to many to make I have loaded them up and taken them over to the cooking workshop. I have three of all of the machines on spark, and two of each on coils. Only one each of the mixer, extractor and refinery have more than seven coils, but I will slowly be adding more to them and then coils to the ones that technically don’t need them but they are a help.

I wasn’t planning on doing that at first, but I noticed when you’re walking around on the floor itself you can’t easily see where a certain machine type is until you’re close enough to see the coils thru the gleam signs so I added these lights above each machine to help with that!

Also gives an awesome effect on some of the walls BTW!

looks fantastic, love how it all looks and the setup is something I think of as I am planning how I want to do mine. Some isn’t practical as I don’t have as much room, but some I can work in I think
