Understanding Critical Chance and Critical effect of weapons

I know that critical chance is just the chance of getting a critical hit. But what does critical effect mean?

I’ll use an example:

  • Gold Hammer has a base damage of 500 per action.
  • Critical effect is 75%
  • Crit chance is 50%.

Does crit chance simply mean that out of every 10 swings, I, on average, will get a critical hit 5 out of 10 times? If so, where does crit effect come into play?

To add an additional layer to this:
I eat a Criticaling Pie. That gives a 100% boost to critical chance. This doubles my Gold Hammer crit chance from 50% to 100%. Does this mean that my Gold Hammer will now get a critical hit 100% of the time?

As far as I know, critical chance is the chance that you will land a critical hit on a swing of your hammer, and critical effect is the amount of addition damage you will do. For instance, with your gold hammer, you have a 50% chance to critically hit for 75% more damage than a normal swing.

As best was explained to me is that chance is chance, and effect is the ceiling cap critical damage can hit. So it is best to say crit dmg instead of crit effect. For example, my gold fists do crit damage of 5.7k if I recall while iron crit damage is capped at 4.2k damage.

So if crit effect is simply crit damage, then calculation is simply base damage * crit effect?

Hence Gold Hammer is 500 * 1.75 = 875 ?

So I have a 50% chance of landing a critical hit of 875.

And if anyone can answer the question about critical food, would much appreciate it. Preferably someone with actual ingame experience since what’s actually written versus how the actual game mechanics can be inconsistent.

As far as your understanding of the crit effect/dmg formula, yes that is exactly what I have tested and proven myself. While gold gear goes down quicker due to lower durability it is quite useful due to the ability to get through shield/armor much quicker as a result of the higher crit dmg.

It then becomes a conversation of if that is valuable for your time/energy when running higher tier meteors.

Thanks for chiming in with your observations. I was actually going to do some experimentation and data collecting regarding mining with silver and gold hammers and bombs and share the info. So I needed to understand the foundational elements before wasting my gold and silver

Everyone kept saying how Titanium is the defacto once you’re done with Iron, but I think there are some situations where Gold and Silver can be used especially in conjunction with some niche recipes to give a boost.

Yes I see you enjoy eve. I played it for years at release. Am a math nerd as well. I had the same convo about the fists and people told me iron was defacto, gold was better used for other things.

I haven’t gotten around to playing with the food yet. Look forward to seeing any math you release down the road if I don’t get to it first myself.

Heh. Yeah, I enjoyed Eve as a sandbox and it’s one of the things that attracted me to this game. Much like the variety of ship builds in Eve, I think one of the underrated aspects of this game is how you combine multiple elements/crafts to create something more unique. So I enjoy the theorycrafting.
