I only called them loot boxes because everyone else seems to. These a better than loot boxes technically because they are not transactions. I agree with others that the game should just automatically bonus you instead of hiding the bonus in the menu somewhere. I wouldn’t mind a little icon pop up that I click on to get the bonus.
Yeah I wasn’t calling you out on that or anything. But this is my point. There are now enough reviews for the game calling them loot boxes that no amount of explanation on the forums is going to convince new users loot boxes don’t exist in this game.
This is costing them sales.
There is no chance the inclusion of “Coffers” did anything but alienate new customers.
Agreed. This drives the point home. I picked up the term after seeing it everywhere.
I wish there were more people on these forums to give the game an objective look. I can agree with the title of the thread. The game isn’t good at delivering a long term playing experience to a large number of players. That is simply a fact right now or the game would be in a much better position. The game isn’t good, right now and that doesn’t diminish its potential to climb out of the hole its in and shine.
The price tag of $40 USD is also too high. It should be half that to economically incentivize more people to buy it and should be done ASAP. The economic reasons behind it don’t lie and having more people giving feedback is a pretty positive thing to have.
New player experience is garbage. Progression between early, mid, and end game “content” is horrible because of the grinding hurdles. Player retention is non-existent for a lot of people and the lack of significant player population growth is evidence of that.
I do love Boundless. I really do. But objectively looking at the track record of how the game is performing in the market after a product launch is evident enough that the game isn’t a viable enough product to attract customers that are going to pay for the game and potentially pay for Cubits to get stuff from The Exchange. It’s hard to justify spending $40 USD on Boundless when there are other games out there that clearly define what they offer and don’t lie about it; which on the Steam page Boundless does do about certain features, mostly Titans.
There are a lot of foundation pieces of Boundless that make it a pretty cool game but those aren’t enough. It lacks content in a lot of major ways. That can be fixed. It has major balance issues. That can be fixed. It has bad progression curve with how grindy the game is from going from garbage unforged tools to decent forged tools without a shop. That is something that also can be fixed.
I do think that the crates you get from The Exchange should be redesigned as something else, perhaps a letter or folded up piece of paper. Something that doesn’t represent a box at all. The visual look of these things currently are providing consistent feedback that they look like lootboxes and that is where this P2W perception of Boundless in some of those Steam reviews probably is coming from.
Like I said, I really do love this game and think the Farming update with placeable lava and water blocks is going to be a really nice step in the right direction. I think Special worlds is a step in the right direction. Each piece of content we get, regardless of how small or big it is, moves this product forward in what I hope to be a positive direction.
Let’s just try not to be in denial of the actual state of the game and how it’s performing in today’s market but let’s also not let up on communicating things positively as much as possible between ourselves and to the developers. If anything is an indication of that, it’s the feedback given to him (James) about crafting times and how those crafting times are being adjusted.
I should spend some time writing up a detailed write-up of the single most exciting piece of content I think this game could have that would retain more players than any other feature in this game and what I’d like to have in it for a game feature. It’s something everyone else really wants: player made dungeons.
Good idea. Add that to the coffer thread I just made!
I will do.
It also seems I give feedback and suggestions on things way more than I actually play this game right now.
Honestly, that’s kind of depressing because of how much I love the game. I just wish there was a big enough motivation to play it for me personally. lol
the problem with lowering the price is it cant go back up without some extra content in it for the people who purchase. so if they drop the game to $20 US then its staying at $20 US which is what I assume is the reason for them not budging on the price. I agree a lower price would bring in more people though but if it doesn’t then its loss profit for the developers and that could be a devastating blow for the game.
Lower price tag means more people are willing to buy it. Regardless if it’s at $40 or $20, the game is majorly needs more content anyways.
also the folded letter idea brilliant just saying
I would like to see a mechanic for user created content to be developed right now its non existent and honestly that would add content faster then the devs having to develop it while working on other things
Do keep in mind that economics disagrees with this a lot. Out of your personal income from your day job, how many times in a pay period can you purchase 10 of something at $100? I know I wouldn’t buy more than one. If the price point was down to $20, I could possibly buy 3 or 4 if I needed to. If it’s lower, I’d buy more of them.
Part of economics, and this is also something some of the shop owners in the game have probably seen with their item prices, is that the cheaper a product is the more consistent your sales will be.
The issue with this is the other edge of this blade happens to be a game that lacks so much content that it would probably not retain those players anyways even after a $20 purchasing point. There’s also the whole demand part of this game. There’s other games doing a better job and the market agrees with that. So this game gets over looked even if Square Enix was marketing it.
Which then goes back to what I’ve been saying for months: content is king and this is a MMO.
So… is Squeenix going to market the game ever? I’ve said before, we should take this into our own hands and buy google and Facebook ads for searches for “Minecraft” for the devs
someone film there town for youtube and call the town hytale
add to title banned by my own staff members
and kicked out by server owner cause i caught them cheating whit pewdiepie was checking out my builds and in end off vid im testing magic potions and restore a rusted knife added bonus unboxing off qbits when performing social experiment gone bad
Probably when there’s something worth marketing. They aren’t going to put a dollar into a marketing campaign for this game until they feel like the ROI is going to be worth it. Right now it isn’t.
Maybe the problem with the coffers is the look like loot boxes so new players are assuming that what they get when they coll3ct is random versus being fixed. The may not understand that when they level every player gets the same amount of cubits and coin. Not being new I am guessing at this but I do wonder.
Yeah if you hover you see the predetermined reward but it’s not obvious. I agree with others it would be helpful to change them. All they did for me (sorry, lovely artist’s lovely art) was remind me of less, ahem, honorable MMOs.
I agree, great art, but they give me loot box PTSD.
