Why I quit. Came back. Quit. Came back etc...?

Hi

Boundless will forever be a game I return to (even to just check out the updates and explore planets).

The feel of community:
I personally do not have any close friends (irl or long time game/online friends) to play Boundless with, so I am missing out on a lot of the community feel, which doesn’t even bother me too much, as I like to get my head down an build - but as far as building anything BIG, that’s all a pipe dream (requires multiple builders with similar goals and building styles).

The lack of end game:
This is perfectly fine for me as I understand Boundless has a small dev team and the game is very indy and relatively new. But I can guarantee others have hit this part of their gameplay and called it quits. I personally cannont wait to see what Boundless will be like in a year from now.

Whenever I come back to Boundless, I ALWAYS start a fresh new character. My reason for this is not really known, but I do like the “start from nothing, build an empire” feel. Maybe someone with behavioural knowledge would know why some people like doing this. And coming back after a few months off to LOADS of items and not much as far as smalls goals go, is something that I don’t really enjoy.

"Too Grindy":
Boundless IS grindy. But is it TOO grindy? That depends if you like the grindiness or not. I like the level of grindiness as I’m happy with specialising in certain areas (building, hunting and crafting for building). This is where community helps - you can have a small group of friends all specialising in different (2 people per area maybe) so a pair can go off mining where a pair can go gathering, then pool your resources to make items for the nights hunt/build project. <-- that, in my opinion is how i think Boundless is best enjoyed.

"Where is our (insert promised feature)?!":
I understand that thinking you’re gonna get something then it turns out you have to wait ages to see that feature is annoying, but I think a slight degree of reasonableness is needed here. The population isn’t big atm, private worlds would kill the game, therefore private worlds won’t be coming anytime soon (this is my best guess).

Negativity:
Now this one is very personal, I am all for freedom of speech ofc, but just being negative with no explanation/reasonable explanation to back up your ideas is just annoying. I don’t want things to change regarding that because people can say whatever they want about the game on this forum but it does stop me from going on the forums and interacting as much as I would want to.

Lack of ‘small’ features:
My favourite block in Boundless is Ice. Why? Because you can do things with it. You can use it to jump further on flat ground, you can use it to make slides, you cna use it to manipulate mobs (the have trouble running fast on it), you can use it to make semi automatic transportation.

I would like more automation, but I understand too much automation (pistons) could be a nightmare for servers) but things like the Minecraft hopper. So maybe we could link up our furnace to our storage block - when the item gets cooked, it shifts over to our storage. Then its up to the community to find new and fun ways to make contraptions. I believe these are things that will push the game to new heights as people LOVE being the first person to do something or find something out. Ethos hopper clock for example (for those minecraft redstone nerds) thats a guy who made something new and got his name stamped to it by the community. YOU could be the next prefix! :joy:

Also it feels like there isn’t much atm to fill your builds with, i believe this will solve that. Farming is a great example, people made gardens and farms before farming. But they were just atheistic. Now they are 100x cooler because they are also functional!
Summary:

  • More players (advertising won’t come till more core features are put in place i’m guessing. If you haven’t got a lot of money, you’re going to want to wait till the ‘perfect’ time to fart a load of money on advertising - understandable)

  • Automation / Semi-Automation / Open-ended mechanics

  • People to stop asking for flying planes so they can explore quicker… I’m pretty sure flying was a BAD idea for a lot of games. (WoW, Fortnite, Minecraft to name a few big ones).

Flying killed the fun in exploring the world in WoW, I agree. It just ruins the whole “hide and seek” feel of having someone else chase you, only to covertly manage to shake them off by using the terrain.

Flying is so dang fast people barely load in properly, before they attack you out of nowhere.

That aside, though, I wish I had more friends who’d love to make something big, natural, and cavernous with me.

Right now, I’ve almost claimed half of the island I’m on for my project, but it takes a while when I’m almost alone with it, as the others aren’t feeling Boundless too much most of the time, and log in sporadically. :pensive:

I  ice too! If you ever want to do some crazy build requiring massive amounts of ice I’ll help in any way I can. I may only have a few hours to play each night, but Boundless is not a race.

Also, I like your Boundless vids!

Nice to see you back again. Even if it is for a short period of time. I agree playing with people and helping each other is key if you don’t have loads of coin to buy everything.
I’m mainly a builder.
If you ever want to play with us you’re more than welcome.
Not sure if you ever did the Reapers Trials. But they are fun and should keep you busy for an hour or 2. Maybe give you some ideas for a dungeon build.
It would be nice to lure you in for a little longer this time. I enjoyed watching your YouTube videos too. Maybe I’ll see you on sometime. :beers:

I think you hit the nail on the head in more than one of those topics!!! Excellent job on the write up!

Negativity on the forums gets out of control sometimes and it really puts me off from wanting to talk to, or even go into their shops/towns with a few select individuals in here. I dislike it so much, that I created this post to give people a smile and a boost.

I’ve been guilty of negativity, but a lot of it was out of frustration and sadness. Frustrated because right when I hit the gem wall bomb mining got nerfed, sadness when friends were leaving over easily fixable things like that time footfall was broken for over a month and the economy temporarily ceased to exist. But I do try to be more constructive now.

Thats the thing… we are just guessing here like you… no one says how it is… wouldnt it be time to tell the truth for the players… i think many of us deserve to know what is possible and realistic and whats not?

Its better sometimes to just tell how things are than leave people playing the guessing game.

Welcome back again @Ovis.

Starting over has a charm to it. You are always welcome to join me. Although I belong to a guild I am mainly a loner too. Guess all builders are in a way.

If you do something that needs different colour of ice I collect every gletcher/ice on every exo i go.

I tried to jump back in the other day…oof.

I wanted to just jump in for an hour and explore a bit. I forgot how long it takes to do anything. Especially when you haven’t played in a while. All my portals are dead…heck, all of Storis 2 seems to be a ghost town. The places I used to frequent are gone. I think there are three operating portals on the Storis 2 PS hub. I almost reopened my portal, but the hub hasn’t been maintained and there are no new tokens at the dark portals.

Is the Storis II Hubbit hub gone now?..I couldn’t seem to find a portal to it.

Overall, it was a frustrating experience, lol. I realized it would be an entire day, at least, just to get started again. I lasted about 45 minutes.

Maybe some other time.

I was looking at a lot of grassy fields where towns used to be when I returned. And a lot of booming towns as well. Gyosha Mall was always a happening place, it’s huge now. TNT, I don’t know when they got started but wow they really took off. Went to the naughty mall, wow that thing is huge. So many others, but yeah a lot of areas purged and vanished.

I think the only thing that has kept me from bailing for an extended period of time is that there is no way to save my progress. I can’t let all my work go.

If you want help getting started just let me or others know, I’m sure people would be happy to help you get up and running ASAP. Coils are only 900c these days (advanced!)

I’d actually love to do that.

Mine is massive and requires building the actual cave ceiling over an entire island. The bright side? I can save plots by not plotting the air in the middle, unless I plan to build there. :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

I’ve always loved seeing people make pretty nature displays, such as the ruins I saw @Combustive having built, if I recall correctly. Those were really pretty.

You dont need a team to build something huge. Just an idea and some time.

There are cities out there almost entirely built by one person.

I saw one on Circ yesterday, which was incredible. Massive nature/forest settlement. I think the person was named something similar to Hercules?

In either case, it was awe inspiring to witness.

Plus simply going around to see the planets gives you incredible inspiration for your own builds.
