Any tips on building a basic fort?

Hey guys. I joined the capital of my guild, and want to have my own little place, but I generally dislike building in games like this. Was wondering how I could build a simple but effective structure, making sure I have enough space for the storage and stuff that I’ll need.

EDIT: Also, should I totally avoid crafting skills on my first character and make a crafter, or can I afford a few skill points invested into crafting?

It really kinda depends on what you want to do in the game. I’m pretty sure some players just live in a hole in the ground and mainly just hunt and sell the loot, or just sit in a machine room and forge all day :stuck_out_tongue:
but yeah generally people (if they have more than one character) will have a crafter as well as their main which could be a gatherer, hunter or builder etc.
if you do end up crafting then what I do and recommend is burying the machines in the floor and have storage above so you don’t have to go anywhere to grab some more ingredients. another advantage of having machines in the floor is that you can’t accidentally get hurt from walking into the coil beams (or stray critters walking into it) --as long as the floor underneath is low enough or enclosed… also if you chisel the floor around the machine with a bevel chisel then you can access all of the coils from above the floor!

and down below I chiselled the top layer of the gem blocks so that you can walk under the spark cords

Also with your first character, it is totally reasonable to take a few crafting skills to get started but once you have enough cubits to buy another character slot you can then start splitting up the crafting skills and such. you get a few cleanse points to swap out skills.
Oh! you also get free skill page resets up until level 20 so feel free to use those and save your individual cleanse points for later.

As far as your structure though, if you don’t want to build at all, there is nothing stopping you from just having your beacon underground and then just expanding as you need more storage or whatever. just make sure to claim more plots than you need around you so that you can expand in case the city surrounds you :stuck_out_tongue: . or at least where you plan to expand.

Thanks for the reply! I really want to just go explore and collect materials, but I feel like not having adequate storage and machines is holding me back. Maybe I’ll try the cave idea that you mentioned.

What kind of materials should I try gathering a ton of that will be useful for later on? I figure I can make a bunch of crafting tables to store anything I need for the time being.

for sure! just lay out rows of storage (or however you like to lay them out, I prefer a 3x3 grid with a different coloured storage block in the middle so it’s easier to see where to open the storage in the grid)
that’s all you really need
I would also try and make (or buy) higher levels of beacon fuel so there is less worry and then make an alarm in your phone if you have a longer lasting one. it is easy to get complacent and forget. before i got the greater beacon fuel i would just check my beacons once a week and use the cheap fuel.
it’s quite disheartening when a beacon expires.

oh! didn’t see this :stuck_out_tongue:
everything. lol
gather everything.
the things that aren’t used much now will have important uses later. the devs want to make everything useful. so if you don’t use it, sell it! or if you’re like me, hoard it! haha :stuck_out_tongue:
it will come in use some day or be able to get you lots of coin.
speaking of which the most valuable item to farm right now is roadrunner feathers. they go for 5-7k.

Regardless of what you want to do for crafting later. I would at least invest in mass craft so that you can work rock to stone faster. Efficient crafting (I think that is the name) is good as well because you will use less fuel in your furnace at the start. Other than that I would not put anything else in crafting for now. Mass craft will also help with a larger exp boost from converting rock to stone, and then additional for refining.

Edit: corrected forge with furnace.

you could ask for a builder on forum
some just like to build and maybe ran out off plots to have fun on
and can create a nice mansion for you
arte intera guild (aqua groupbuilds) will provide this service in futur
but atm our agenda is overbooked

Wow, is that an option? That’d be great! I don’t even need anything fancy, just want a place to call home.

Here’s a tip if you want to build anything that looks better than a box/rectangle. DONT build right at the edge of you plots. Leave at least 2-4 blocks from the edge of the plots that way you can add to the outside of your building creating more depth and just better looking building with out then having to buy all the plots around.

any time someone says “fort” I think of like a straight up log fort from the 1800’s and I get a strong urge to build one and chisel the heck out of it

something like this:

but like, with these logs:

just so the chiselling looks better :stuck_out_tongue:

However many plots your thinking of using, double it and then double it again. It’s surprising how much space you can end up using especially if you want a little wriggle room all around and if you plan on making a workshop give yourself plenty of room for that too as they can grow surprisingly large once you start putting in all the machines, spark cores and coils as well as storage, worktables and furnaces.

Agree with most of what is said here. We each have our style of playing. If you are going to build with rock, yes, the mass crafting will be good. If with wood, you won’t need it, for me it was a waste of skill points until I made my first alt, then I gave her mass crafting for the food and still use bulk mainly. It depends on how much you are going to use it and that is five skill points.
And yes, I know, you save on the items, but if you don’t have 200 of something to mass craft with you have to resort to bulk anyhow, so why get the mass when you can’t use it?

Agree with the plots. Had tried to make a fort, gave up because I got involved in getting my main girl skills up to go to the higher level planets, so set aside the work on the fort for another time.

Suggestion, dig a basement for storage, get at least double the amount you need and keep putting down plots around your plots so you will have room to expand. In placing plots underground it also keeps players from placing plots above ground near you. You never know when someone may want to build near you and find they have placed plots right beside yours and you can’t go in that direction.
Player didn’t do it for griefing, just wanted to build in that area, I had plenty of room on the other three sides. Fortunately, they moved a few days later and I gave away the base to a new player. Moved my alt to my home base and didn’t need it any more.
Back to the fort. You can build small at the start, and then enlarge it later on when you have the needed items and get more experience.
Don’t forget about needing plots to go up, but you can add those later, you will get plenty of cubits to use for plots fast as you level up from experience and doing the objectives.

And don’t forget to ask for help, advice as you learn, those here on the forum like to help new players, as long as they aren’t rude turds who insult you all the time. And I don’t see you doing that.
