Bad Reviews?

Been watching some reviews on YouTube of Boundless from the past few months (not going to mention names ofc), but its really frustrating seeing the reviewers mention Pay2Win and Lootboxes. I started playing in September, s wasn’t around for alpha/beta , am I missing something or was there Lootboxes and Pay2Win before that? Or are these just inaccurate reviews?

PS. Not after any pitchforks, just genuinely curious - nice comments please

People are mad about cubits being shown in “lootboxes” even though there is no randomness. Then you can buy cubits and buy plots. That’s their argument. Kinda silly because you still have to build

Probably just people who didn’t take the time to actually play the game for more than 10 mins. The boxes u get from leveling could appear to be loot boxes but we all know thats just how the currency is rewarded. I dont think there’s any randomness to it at all

Game Designers are guilty of how it was presented. Getting skill points, xp, coins and cubits… look like opening loot boxes. The similarities are obvious, and I think their intention was to mimic loot boxes from other games. One thing they probably didn’t think off, is that loot boxes generally are perceived by gamers as bad thing and not the good thing. And when game was released it was too late to change it to anything else. I know game is not P2W, I never think of it that way… but impressions, especially first impressions do matter.

I agree. Never played a game involving loot boxes that I enjoyed because I knew only trash would drop from them.

Bad perception is all it was… a mistake by the devs, to be sure

Okay cool, thanks for the comments guys - so the next question is… what can the community do to fix it?

I wish I knew. Steam reviews (and the reviewers) can be heartless and unforgiving.

I think the only thing that can be done is for the devs to release a big new content patch that brings in more players (and more positive reviews)

Typical gaming reviews to be honest. Most of the reviews on Boundless aren’t very substantive…even the good ones. I’ve yet to see a video review that discusses the finer nuances of the crafting system, how deep the tech tree is, or robust the player economy is. Those, to me, is what really makes the game stick out. Most of them are surface level reviews that focuses on the “Minecraft” aspect of the game.

the general problem of presenting a game in a youtube review is mostly there is only a small part of the whole picture presented. that makes teh 50% of it the last 50% of it is people not taking some time to inform themself about it. i for myself use a simple system. watch reviews and then go to the homepage read the info, get some info from wiki.

lootboxes we get after defeting meteor creatures. inside the meteor.

usualy the most people dont watch youtubers play the game. reviews are shorter. but not a lot info there.
there is a lot youtubers making good content. a lot info and explaining.

reviews are too short to provide enough info. people are too lazy to read or watch. but the community in this game can show every new player the right direction if he is willing to give it a try.

Forgot about these but technically they’re no different from killing a boss and getting drops or treasure chest drops. I hope people aren’t complaining about those :joy:

I believe the commuity can help the game to overcome this.
Because gamers who are genuinely interested will check the official forum, not steam reviews full of “game refunder” with 1 hour of playing time.

But we need some help from the devs too.
My suggestion would be to change the layout of the forum. And if I say the community could be involded, it’s because we are building content 24/24h

A gallery of recent screenshots/creations with thumbnails should be at the top of the page.
Current design is too generic an provide nothing emotional. The good stuff like the huge screenshot post is buried most of the time.

Discussion about trending issues are getting too much visibility (yup! the game got many of them) Should be separated from General chanel. People interested by the game will check them wathever the place. No need to put them on display.

We can use the official forum in a more positive way. The pinned post to tell your story was a good move. We need more of this.

If the name of the game is land ownership, then the game is pay to win. Footfall produces silly amounts of coin. Just build simple, but big in a high traffic area and coin will literally rain on you. Everything else from there is just shopping. I had no clue how crazy footfall was myself until my partner and I built a portal near the Alcyon Portal Seekers hub. Each our beacons are getting at least 1000 coin a day from footfall and we NEVER see people on Alcyon. I cannot imagine how much footfall is being generated on T3 planets and near their portal hubs.

But almost all that money made from footfall is litteraly put straight back into keeping the portals up. I don’t think these portal owners are swimming in money just from footfall

They do not own the portals, one of the Portal Seekers dudes do.

I’m hoping they do a large content update and a relaunch after the Holidays with some actual advertising. I think this game completely flew under the radar with some very confusing messaging.

When it came out, Greg miller from Kinda Funny was doing his daily run down of new releases and the extent of his mention of this game was “This was that strange one from a couple E3’s, right? Kinda Minecrafty?” and that was it.

No one knows about this game and the ones who do generally don’t realize it’s an MMO.

Oh my confusion there, sorry. Thought you were meaning the portal owners. If I understand correctly now you are meaning just average players who have settled near portal hubs?

This is just simply not true.

Anyone who jumps in and starts playing Boundless would think there’s loot boxes judging by how rewards are handed out. Any review trying to pass it off as actual loot boxes isn’t worth a read.

Yeh I’m glad we’re all on the same page in regards to people being missinformed about the game. Thank for the discussion
