Blueprints of Buildings

A way for players to take a blueprint of a building they have made would be amazing, maybe allow players to sell said blueprints as well, that way, those who don’t like desiging buildings could also have the possibility of just plopping down a blueprint and then build into that blueprint.

Don’t know if it still is a thing but there was talk back in the days that you could possibly sell your beacons for others(if they had enough free plots ofcourse), so you could possibly build something and then just sell that for someone who’s not so into building.

Well - thats quite a bit different from blueprints though, being able to easily replicate a build elsewhere you’ve done would be mighty useful I think, especially if I have to move due to finding a better location etc.

Well it is, but if the whole point would have been just that making/sharing builds for others, that would have beens basicly as good as blueprints, but if you want to move your base and build it exactly like it was before obviously a blueprint would be the only way to go.

Though on the topic maybe you could craft a “copy beacon” which you’d place in to a beacon you want to record and it would then save the plot count and placement as well as all the player placed blocks and furniture in the beacon, when placed it would obviously show the ghost build and maybe it could be turned into a regular beacon by fueling it at which point it would also acquire the plots needed.

With blueprints builders could also create buildings which they could blueprint ( would have to blueprint one for each blueprint) and put it on the market though, which in turn would also save them plots - and others looking for a build to buy would have the option of going through a list of buildings before actually deciding which one they like the most.

I can see the usefulness of selling plots, which honostly, is something I think should be added as well, but thats really a different topic.

Now that you can buy plots via buying cubits in the exchange, I doubt you will ever be able to buy them in game from other players.

The idea was not to sell your plots away but exchange the owner ship of the beacon, which would free up plots for the seller and use up the buyers free plots equal to the beacons plots.

I’ve thought about blueprints before, question is how will they work? will the blueprint be for one plot? or several 4x4, 8x8, 4x2 etc (logically 1x1 plot makes sense) whats the cost? the blocks used in the blueprint plus a fee? It’s a great idea, be tricky to implement.

The ways I would handle it would be either as a sort of recipe you “craft” through the beacon (with either specific block requirements or special “morphic” blocks) or as a color coded overlay that allows you to “trace” the build.

To reduce system requirements, I’d likely go with the first.

Creativerse has a very robust blueprint system, complete with blueprint sharing via Steam workshop. It works quite well and I could definitely see a blueprint system being translated to work for Boundless. In Boundless, rather than being a steam workshop thing, it would be cool to see blueprints being an item that could be exchanged and sold in shopstands!
Creativerse: You simply craft a “cornerstone” of an appropriate size (small, medium, large) which projects a cubed area that it will copy. Done. On the user end, you place the cornerstone which will project a ghost image of the blueprint. You can interact with the cornerstone to substitute blocks for another type (blue blocks replaced with red if you want), then confirm the placement of the build. It will then show you what block to place, one section at a time. When you place the correct block, it will automatically rotate and wire up the block appropriately. For Boundless, this would probably translate to appropriate block rotation and chiseling.

In Creativerse, the blueprint system has led to a proliferation of really, really cool stuff being shared- from large houses to cleverly built home furnishings.

I’m thinking that an appropriately translated system would be an amazing opportunity to expand the Builder’s role in the Boundless economy, by providing them a way to put their service into the existing economic framework!
I wonder if there’s opportunity to also package the required blocks into the blueprint such that you could simply confirm placement of the blueprint and bam, it’s built. It would be super cool to peruse someone’s home furnishing store and walk out with the whole prefab ready to go, rather than having to acquire the blocks and build it myself. This would be a one-time use thing, which would potentially make it a repeat purchase much like everything else in the economy. I’d adore it.

Interesting and well constructed response. Having blueprints the economy like you said is a great idea!

I don’t like the idea for boundless at all…

Lets just think about this a bit!

Blueprints in voxel games have typically been in games that revolve around Space Ships Boats etc, like Empyrion or From the Depth’s and the blueprint system works very well in these games. Because seeing the same vehicle isn’t that big of a deal…

Now imagine if Boundless has a blueprint system…
Do you think we would see the mass production of mud huts? very unlikely…

What we would see is Blackstone Citadel, or the City of Steam, or the Hash Dolphin being recreated and thus making the original build Less impressive…

I really don’t want impressive builds to be cheapened with a blueprint system so others can copy the work over and over…

And trust me if there was a group of players that really could use the blueprint system “IE the Portal Seeker gateways” I am among them, it would certainly make building the gateways easier for our members…

I really can’t think of alot of other similar applications for a blueprint system besides the obvious wow that build is cool I want to build it too… maybe so basic shop stand design’s but seriously how hard is it to copy something like that without a blueprint?!?

Ultimately I think Blueprints in this game would be a terrible idea…

Although i would like to see blue prints purely for personal use, you have a a good point there. It was my only gratification as a builder knowing that people enjoyed City of Steam and I would only appreciate a copy of anything from that build if someone took the time to understand how to reproduce it.

The author of said building would have to create then blueprint of the building itself - often, atleast with very large buildings, is often building around the terrain its located at, also making it very difficult to actually replicate it elsewhere, plus you could tie spark or power or some other resource that would scale with the size of the building you want to sell - also increasing the actual cost of making the blueprint itself, which in turn would also push the prices up on such buildings even.

Sure a builder could sell some massive or even less massive but very impressive buildings, but doesnt necessarily mean that they would do that, but it still presents an opportunity for those who don’t feel that they can actually build something amazing to get a chance to get something nice to live in.

Overall the buyer would certainly also need the coins to actually afford either a multitude of blueprints for different buildings, the same building, or a massive building.

Making the blueprint a consumable would be a thing too so you can’t reuse it after you’ve decided on a location.

EDIT: Oh and, it would also make something for builders to earn some coins off while working on other projects too.

I know that as a builder, I don’t exactly earn a lot of coins as I’m too busy making sure the project im working on actually gets finished.

Terrific! Sounds like a great future feature.

I like the idea of blueprints!

  1. I can create sculptures and sell them for gardens.
  2. if I like an Outpost design for my kingdom I can blue print it and reuse it.
  3. I can but interesting builds and learn how they were created this increasing my own building skill

I hope they impliment this feature. It plays well with my style.

If you didn’t want your building to be blueprinted and recreated everywhere, you just wouldn’t create and sell the blueprint, as @Zoin said.
It would be a great way to earn coin… again, as @Zoin said

What would stop me from blueprinting a blueprint build and selling it for my own profit?

nothing to stop you from investigating a build an figuring out how it is done except a lock and if you cannot see it then why would you buy it?

Of course some people would not want to figure it out, but if they have to build it anyway, they will still have to be able to match any chiseling and by looking at blocks figure out what they are (color and type).

The problem isn’t that blueprints are a bad idea, necessarily. Just that they would be too easily abused. People’s unique builds would be copied left and right. If one player spent the time to duplicate a unique build, they could then make blueprints and resell that build. If they became a popular enough source, people may even be led to believe said person was the original creator.
