Booooooks!

Sooo as the construction on the library continues (hopefully I’ll have it done before release), Ive sat and wondering about the actual probability of bookshelves being added so heres an idea I had for the devs:

First, Books:
-crafting
-single craft
-1 sackcloth (or if they desired to add something like papyrus crafted out of lumber or trunks) + 2 hide
-mass craft - 10
-8 sackcloth + 16 hide
-bulk craft - 50
-40 sackcloth + 80 hide

The booms could then be used as sort of a note, with multiple pages, possibly 10 or around thereabouts that have maybe a 300 character limit (or lower if that seems too much) as well as having a text slot for the title of the book, which would then change the items name to the title. Untitled books would be items remaining named as books, but could still be in a smart stack with named books. Books would be stackable but the titled books would become unstackable (except for being in a smartstack) as this way it would be more space efficient yet still easy to find which book you’re looking for.

Secondly, Bookshelves:
-wooden
-Single craft
-10 lumber + 5 books
-mass craft - 10
- 60 lumber + 40 books
-bulk (or volume) craft - 50
- 180 lumber + 80 books

The same would go for stone bookshelves as well save for the lumber being replaced with stones, and of course the lumber or stone used would affect the color of the bookshelves.

The books could also have multiple colors, maybe have an option within the book menu to choose what color you want it to be and have some soort of requirement to change the color, such as having flowers of the color you wish the book to be, as to use the flowers for some sort of dye?

The last note I would like to make, having the bookshelves have different tiers of appearances such as the doors, so they could have like plain bookshleves, decorative, and ornate? Maybe the same with books even too, as to give you a variety of different boook types, each type having a different amount of pages and/or character limits on the pages.

I would love to hear what the rest of the community thinks about this idea, as the books themselves could then be used for checklists, ledgers, or stories. Even maybe keep a personal record or your in vame adventure so far, or just have a personal journal.

Also last note, having a book varient with a lock that you can give permission to other player or not with as to have even more of a personal journal or such.

(Edited) another idea had occured to me as well, having the bookshelves appear empty, much as atorage units do, until books are actually placed onto the ahelvea, rendering the use of books in the shelves recipe obsolete, and instead replacing the books in the recips with something such as glue, or bonding agents depending on the tier of bookshelf

(Second Edit) And yet another idea!
So this part is more directed towards the devs
I’m sure that creating interactive props and programming the menus must be a tedious and strenuative task, as I’m sure there’s probably lines upon lines of code, but to make it simpler, you could use the same base code that’s used for storage blocks, and modify it slightly to fit the use of a bookshelf, and the same could be said about books, except using the code for a sign and modifying it to include the books pages and title.
Just a thought to try and make it easier on the devs :heart::heart:

(Third Edit) also as yet another note, possibly even include metal variants of bookshelves as well

Also I apologize for any spelling mistakes as I am typing this out all on my phone  I appreciate all the support, as well as constructive criticism, that this suggestion might get, and thank you in advance for taking the time to consider and preview this topic :heart::heart:

I am also currently working on a depiction of what the interaction menus could possibly look like, so just hold tight as I continue editing the photos

I think books should have larger limits, so we can write bigger stories, as it can be quite easy to go over word limits when you are in full swing of writing a story

Oh definitely my dude, I simply just put a lower limit than I actually wanted to because I’m not sure how viable a 500 page book with a 700 character limit per page would be in game, to average players and the devs.

In essence I made it a smaller amount because if the my idea does come to fruition, I doubt most people would actually use the entire book if we had that much space

I totally agree with you though, as I would love nothing more than to be able to write full on books within the game

Also as a note ,I would like to say the addition of books in the game and giving the players the ability to write full on books could easily be seen as a way to add the games very own culture amongst the player made everything else too.

I mean imagine that, a game where the planets (some at least), cities, community, and economy were all player made, but also a culture in the game as well! That’s literally verging on a virtual reality at that point! I think that’s just an amazing and awe inspiring thought

I love this idea, I have been writing poems on signs and often wish there was more text space in it–to be able to write poems in books and maybe even sell them would be so much fun!
