So it’s come up a few times in conversation that people would like to enable more concurrent connections to their sovereign worlds. It may be a bit premature but I just want to put out a suggestion for a purchasable add-on / upgrade that would enable this.
If you could purchase a “connection pack” item in various sizes it would easily address most of the scenarios I’ve seen brought up.
As an example, let’s say you could purchase a code similar to the world fuel. These codes would enable an extra 10 concurrent connections to your sovereign world. They could be available in something like 1, 7, and 30 day increments.
I would assume that the bandwidth requirements would be the same, if processing requirements are similar the price per connection would optimally be the same regardless of world size.
This sort of arrangement would decouple world size from the user cap and allow for various scenarios like:
A party or occasional large hunt on your small world (single day)
A temporary increase in traffic like a building contest or scavenger hunt (week long)
Guild members contributing to a consistently busier world (month+)
This would also be helpful for things people have mentioned like hunting-focused planets. I don’t think I’ve ever been on a group hunt that used anything like 50 regions. With this sort of decoupling a user might be likely to purchase a smaller planet, but the revenue would be balanced by consistently paying for a higher connection count to support regular hunts or other activities.
Im fully hoping that in the future, they allow for such upgrades to sovereign worlds
Lets say you have an exo-sized world that supports 10 players and you want to upgrade its player size. You cant generate a new world without loosing whats on the old one, so in that sense allowing players to “upgrade” the number of people allowed on it would be neat.
Just having the option to upgrade an exo-sized sovereign to 40 slots at a similar cost to a normal 40-sized planet per month would be a nice option.
And to go with this idea I would like it if all planets start out with 10 players and that the price of medium & large planets could be lowered a tad.
Perhaps $10, $15 & $20 with 10 player slots.
At least that is if that still makes it cover the costs of course.
I’d definitely support this idea in theory and think its worth considering for future updates.
I’m not sure how well it would work in practice. I think I read that when a planet was set up, it’s picks an environment that is ‘correct’ for its needs and its done. If that is the case, they’d have to implement some way to shut down, re-evaluate and restart the planet in a new environment every time this kind of change was made. I don’t how practical/feasible that is, especially if they want to be temporarily done with these planets for now so they can spend some time working on other features.
Right, this sort of setup presumes that bandwidth is the primary impact and computational costs are minimal, or at least manageable.
I know from conversation that the low user caps are a concern for several players and groups. If this is a feasible setup with on demand resources at AWS then it seems like it would not only offer increased flexibility, but also decrease the need (desire?) for a more complex matrix of fixed packages.
I’m not sure either ofc. And in the coming weeks months I’d also be happier to see some other additions to the game. It’s great to see rental planets arrive but shields/melee, new machines or furniture, and some of the crafting automation I’ve heard whispers about would be a lot more likely to re-invigorate my own interest in the game.
This would be nice. A complete decoupling for people who want mega-builds on low traffic planets as well as those who want busy worlds for hunting, retail centers, guild facilities, etc… on small worlds.
I’m not sure how it would play out with people who have paid for the current arrangements well into the future already, though.
Right, well they had to get something on the table and clearly they’re flooded right now with an enormous number of planets being requested. I don’t know how feasible something like this is with their architecture but it seems like an idea worth discussing for some future expansion.
The sovereign worlds were promised during the kick start and they finally got delivered. But we have to see that the majority of the player aren’t going to pay an optional monthly subscription of at least $10.
That was the first big update in a long time and it contained nothing for people who don’t want to (or can’t) spend $10 per month. Personally, I would prefer if the devs would move forward with more important parts of the game instead of trying to optimize the code for a small minority of player.
Just to be clear, this is me. I’m eager for more stuff in the game. I keep gleam club, but currently have no plans to rent a planet for the long term.
However, there’s this:
And the world count from Boundlexx:
Besides a massive influx of new colors for existing materials, there may not be a lot here for people who aren’t interested in renting a planet. I would say, though, that it’s massive for the game, and clearly brought a ton of interest.
This is the sort of thing that increases revenue (resources) and increases pressure to add new features for everyone. Tuning for this market is significant.
It’s possible that in about 27 days we’ll see the peak size of the boundless universe - due to some initial enthusiasm and people ordering extra worlds to spin for colors and dial in their biome selections.
Perhaps not though If interest stays high as word spreads that planets are available who knows.
@majorvex posted that in the screenshots thread, I’m not sure where she sourced it. Someone said steam showed over 300 concurrent so I assume (but not sure) it represents both platforms.
Maybe, I’m not convinced I want to start building with these colors where my access to them can disappear any second. Sure, I can get access back… for a small fee of $10 per month.
I’m not whining, it’s just my nature that I’m going to stick to the permanent colors. There must be a really good reason for me to start mining colors on someone elses sovereign. Black gleam would probably be the only exception… but after that’s unlocked I’m sure there will always be a black gleam public access planet around.
Let’s assume
100 sovereign planets.
All 4.5 km
Wonderstruck can keep 66%, 33% goes to AWS and their payment processor.
100 * $20 * 0.66 = $1320 per month
How much time can you justify to improve such a project?
And do you think it is going to be good for the game, when a relevant portion of the cool stuff and events happens on locked away planets? Sure, it must be great to hunt on a sovereign where you can ban trolls. But new player will unlikely see your hunt and be positively affected by the event.
Yes I know what this thread is about. I was curious about the influx of players and if the data that was presented counted ps4 players as well as players on sovereigns and exos. Guess I should have made a new topic to ask that question.
As for the topic at hand I agree it would be nice to have more people on the smaller planets etc. As eventually my planet will be open to the public and I’d like to see it turn into a world people enjoy to be at and potentially build their towns etc.
