I think you should be able to get/make gliders or something similar, but flight should be something that requires infrastructure to support. I would absolutely love if there could be airship transportation between cities, possibly even in the future a world in the clouds that requires you to fly up to it (or a sort of sky temple thing)

I have been secretly hoping mobs will have grappling hooks.

If I remember right there was a concept art for the guardians which also has some flying ones … May be your wishes come true

Check this post, there is a method very reasonable you can end up flying

That looks a lot like hunter x hunter skills, even down to the names of the 6 categories of nen

This is more likely a concept for procedural artificial intelligence of npc’s. Could be at least.

Maybe there could be flying creatures only encountered in the sky and this makes it necessary to land to escape them as fighting while flying should not be possible. This would give people a chance to fly while having to dodge dangers and land if attacked (if attacked while flying you would fall).

How about some kind of magic what makes float for 10-15 seconds but only mage type can do it with certain radius ?

Hmm, could also be handled with an equipment for short flights (so that everyone could lern/do it), but jea, short flights like used to in Terraria (the early flight equip  ) could be a good balance between exploration flair and mobility. having a glide after the flight would also be cool

All of these have mentions of different methods of flight.

well could you elaborate on that point?

I disagree that the environment should necessarily be something that HAS to be reckoned with and I disagree that flight would Necessarily wreck that reckoning
I’m a big proponent of Choice
You play the game in any way that YOU find fun so long as it doesn’t interfere with someone Else’s experience

There has to be reason. For example, I agree that people should play in a way that is fun for them. I also agree with the premise of choice (even god powers) in a single player game or on a private world. But at the same time, in an MMO where status is earned not given, a player cannot rule the world, create mobs and/or blocks out of thin air just because they find it fun. There is a limit to everything. There is a very good reason that flying is not allowed in normal MC play. The Oort worlds will be survival play. There is no survival if you can just fly away.

nobody is asking for unearned flight
(in fact I’d rather it be a notable achievement)

Yeah. Like achieving levels of ascension [Figuratively, anyhow] give people a really powerful sense of achievement. I think in a world like Oort, flight [Or a level of it with some limits] would be a suitable achievement of high ascension.

Yes and/or in the case of Jetpacks or air ships it would be a material achievement

Well to be fair, challenge often interferes with choice. It’s all about balancing that.

Flying is a game breaking mechaninc, as some have not so blatantly stated, I agree.
Perhaps flying could be like in Spore, where a player could Triple jump, long distance, instead of completely flying.
