I’m posting this topic because I think I have some neighboors which thinks they are smarter and have find a kind of loop in the rules.
Let me explain:
They are using spoonerism to names everything, the hamlet, their beacons and also as their avatar name in game. As most spoonerism, they are sexually oriented, and more are just popular and so very easy to find out.
The problems are:
1/ It’s in french, so most players won’t be able to understand it I guess.
2/ French kids won’t be able to probably understand it too, they don’t even know this kind of play words exist I suppose.
But still, my girlfriend and I tried to build something nice, a little bit RP (even in name) and finally we get stuck with our neightboors and awfull name around us.
Worst of all, a guy is having 51% of the beacons and now we have lost our sweet name for a stupid spoonerism name which is kind of pornographic.
Since I don’t won’t to be a “informer” I would like your opinion.
We are anyway planning to move very soon, so it’s maybe not that a problem for us, and remove every blocks and plots, but still I’m not sure I should let them have this kind of name on a +7 years old game anyway.
Should I ?
EDIT: I tried to ask gently on their mailbox if they can stop it before I report them or what ever.
have you reported them (not players, rather the inappropriate names)? that’s what you do when you feel a names/behavior of other players are wrong - it’s up to the devs then to decide if there are grounds to take action
I’ve had the displeasure of finding some very explicitly named beacons before, which I reported immediately via the in-game reporting options. Some were amusing, sure, but that doesn’t make it right.
Plays on words are difficult to decide on, but I suppose anything that feels out of place for this type of game should probably simply not be there, in my opinion… There’s a time and a place for everything, and personally I have never felt Boundless is the kind of place for crude jokes relating to explicit or dirty stuff.
Anyway, I think asking them about it is probably a decent idea. In principle I would also not assume any ill intent from anyone who names stuff in these ways and would rather give people the benefit of the doubt, if possible.
thats why I said to report the names they use - I reported a forum avatar once and devs took action very fast and it was changed by its user then; nothing to do with the person - just the image (and in your case its the beacons names)
its always safe to assume that the person didn’t have the most thoughtful moment when choosing names/avatars and that they will know better later, rather than judging the person to be this or that
It’s often hard to catch inappropriate uncommon cultural or foreign language references. So when players report possibly inappropriate names I simply search for them online - and if the first few hits or Wikipedia page suggest they’re inappropriate (racist, swearing, offensive, etc) then I simply rename them.
So please report them in game - this gives me the full metadata about the location and ownership without me needing to ask for it. I will sometimes PM you on the forum to say that action was taken.
If in doubt - PM me. (But I’ll still ask you to report it in game.)
I and others are pushing for a Settlement Opt-Out feature to help make sure people can keep their name and not deal with stuff like this. It wouldn’t solve the neighbor stuff but at least the name. I do suggest reporting it if it really has a bad meaning or one that crosses lines. We want this to be a nice friendly family game.
True, but the opt out thing is going to cause way more than that, if you use your imagination you will see many many ways this will cause incredible drama far beyond the issue it is trying to fix… I voice opposition to this for the good of the community IMHO… for me personally I welcome it.
It’s a fine line between acceptable and a play on words. Me personally I’d hope that things wouldn’t just be changed because someone has an issue. Hopefully the devs will talk to that person before they just change whatever unless truly wrong. I’d be pissed if I logged in one day and my ■■■■’s farms or ■■■■’s domain was just changed
Yes some do need to be removed but… my name is inappropriate to some people but it’s my name so should I not be able to use my name on my builds? Just food for thought. What’s inappropriate for 1 isn’t for another. So just auto deleting or renaming isn’t ok with me.
