At the most fundamental level this is correct. The game runs on the server - and this is the only secure system.
Any data sent to the client can be snooped in transit, read from memory, pulled from caches, etc. The clients is fundamentally untrusted. (The PS4 is a fundamentally more secure platform, but the server treats the PC and PS4 exactly the same.)
Some data is perfectly secure as it only exists on the server.
Everything else isn’t as it needs to be sent to the client, and for efficiency purposes, often more than is required.
Ultimately the game can only be secured by the server. Because whilst there are some friendly players exploring the internals of the game, there could easily be unfriendly players.
But clearly removing grass, changing VFX, snooping network traffic, etc is an advantage. Varying from minimal to some.
The line I’ve draw with the players have I spoken with is that they must “respect the integrity of the sandbox”. Don’t do anything that changes the rules or experience of the sandbox for other players.
When players have extracted data which I consider too much of an advantage the solution is improve the security of system (sometimes v. hard) or change the way the game works to avoid the issue. In the case of the beacon expiration timers - the solution is simple - only send expiration timers to the owners.
Is that solution already implemented is the big question now?
Is running macros also falling under this, or not? Is a block changing macro ok? What about an auto ‘farming’ macro? Is there a line with scripts/macros???
Is being able to gather more materials or easier block change than others changing the rules too much? Is it affecting other people’s experience?
And also, is removing grass doing the same thing?
It’s still so very open to interpretation that we still can’t be sure what is and what is not allowed…
well its not that I chose to own the game on PS4, but rather it was the only way I could afford it. Not every one can afford a PC that can run the game…
Outside of gathering removing grass has sometimes use for better killing small creatures, which can hide themselves good on tall grass, combined this on dark area it is annoying
I understood this topic came up because of locating meteorites, I hope meteorites would show up on compass, generally I hope game would allow show some stuff that is available for live tracking from debug menu on compass.
I think client should give much as possible information for both platforms so that there wouldn’t be chance to scare some potential players off.
Not everyone knows how to or feels comfortable building their own pc. And that’s about the same price as buying a used ps4. Or almost the same price the PS4 was for Black Friday.
Yes, but it is a choice. I’m not saying everyone get a PC, but as said I feel it’d be the wrong direction to gimp the game because of the console support.
Developers have welcomed mods since the beginning and it was one of the points of the game that alot of us early backers liked about it… so theres that too. I say this is unlikely to be removed. I would suggest the Playstation Boundless community petition Sony to allow modding in Boundless.
Sony allows mods but the problem would more likely be with the fact none of these mods are officially supported by boundless. And I don’t see that happening as we can’t get a solid line of what’s okay and not.
Then they say “sure! that’s cool!” but it would mean the mods have to be vetted by the devs otherwise it won’t ever be possible, not even if half the planet would sign that petition…
(Sony is validly worried about people using mods for games to hack the OS, then run copied games, etc., etc.)
Instead of simply telling all the console players to go whine at Sony why not help us to come up with a constructive solution here where everyone is happy?
Even if all PC players can install the latest and greatest macros/mods/mitm stuff not everyone is going to know about it and if they know about it not everyone is going to use them. That still means there are people out there with an advantage over others.
Has nothing whatsoever to do with what Sony allows or disallows, the question is, how could one solve such a discrepancy and give as many people access to the same things?
And should the devs implement systems that the more bad hacks/mods/whatever can be prevented because “they break the sandbox and other people’s experience”?
Couldn’t agree more… the game is already gimped enough in the ui and ux departments due to having to support both controller and keyboard & mouse setups simultaneously.
Honestly, that is where mods should really shine, allowing modders to make better and more focused interfaces for their preferred platform.
I also do have a Steam account so any real things I miss out on I will do so on those characters (Halloween gathering with no grass mod FTW!)
these are NOT PS4 concerns, these are concerns about it not being an even playing field
Plenty of people on PC don’t even know about mods for Boundless, plenty more do but do not want to use them for whatever reason that may be. To dismiss even the later as “well they can, that they don’t is their problem” seems odd to me, especially considering that most mods that have been posted about here in this Modding section are simple enough for the devs to add to the game, half are simple config variables that have been changed, other half is replacing some text strings (ie. colour number in front of the name) and others replace textures (no grass mod). Any of those can be nicely added to the game itself!
I am curious tho, how do you Kras feel about analysing network traffic for personal, in-game, gain? That ok? Not quite a mod, but that line can be rather murky anway…
I only use the simplistic things like vegetation and distance of player or meteor… analysing network traffic is beyond me, but Simoyd’s mod was the foundation for the item pricing feature we all have in the game to enjoy today, so there is no easy answer.
The rules of the game stay the same, so is it gimping the game?
I don’t think so…
Nothing to do whatsoever with the PS4 since you can use controllers on PC as well.
Also, the user interface and the user experience are severely gimped on PS4 because it was designed around a mouse, so I have no clue what you feel has been gimped for controller support…
The controller basically tries to emulate a mouse by being able to move a pointer around the screen, it can be rather slow with a controller and not very accurate, a mouse is much, much better!
And speaking of. Most People are right handed, since I started playing on PS4 I was flabbergasted that the game’s tutorial which starts in the sanctum FORCES you to put the totem in your left hand!
I never understood that until I started using a mouse with the PC game (mostly use controller there too anyway but sometimes use a mouse) because the left hand’s action button is the left mouse button!!!
@james Perhaps an idea to change this for the PS4? Start tutorial using the right in-game hand? Makes more sense to most people with a controller…
Perhaps even add to both version and detect controller use…
@AeneaGames give it some time. It took Tr a long time to add one-click verified mods into the game UI. It seems that Boundless has been incorporating certain mods - especially ones that everyone likes or would like to use.
Not all PCs are on par with each other. PS4 has a different OS and hardware…everything isn’t the same and it probably will never be. The only way that would happen is if Wunderstruck became the new IBM and issued all players the same PC to play their game.
Why does it take 2 years for Terr or MC to bring certain updates to consoles, after the PC/java/win version already had it? Things will never be perfectly even for everyone.
What we can do is let the devs know when we think there is a mod that would greatly benefit everyone’s overall gameplay and ask for it to be added in…as they have done in the past.
For mouse users the left button makes the most sense as the default action button, at least to me it does, am sure left handed people would prefer the right button
