As all development processes, they take time, and please do take your time. This game is a gem that really needs to shine to more people. You are bringing hope and for sure you are bringing people back to the game with just this move, you will see.
I just, hope for one thing if it’s not too much to ask, please do not overmonetize the game, in the past Wonderstruck had a a rule, and they stuck to it and constrained themselves to not make the game a P2W fiesta and for that they won my respect for the game. I totally understand the game needs to make profit, just please, don’t be greedy as most MMOs are those days. This game, as a lot in here can and probably will confirm, is the type of game model that you can emotionally attouch to it, you can easily make friends and organically build communities and help eachother. Haven’t played it in quite some time and still won’t due to IRL stuff, but it always had a special place for me.
I wish you well and hopefully will meet in game after a successful re-release.
With respect,
Lion
PS:
Now I have a reason to bookmark the forum and check it more frequently
Having never heard of Crowfall and Mythgard, and the first time I have heard of this studio in general, I’m a bit skeptical, similarly to @Trundamere here… A quick first glance at their games page at Games | Monumental spotlights Crowfall and Mythgard, but they also spotlight 3 Mobile Games on TOP of that, under the names of Storm Wars, Looty Dungeon and Little Alchemist. That said, I believe the core design flow of Boundless as is already leans heavily towards the mobile gaming market, what with egregious timers on crafting and what have you, as well as the loot box style nature of the forging system this game has to offer, I’m sure the new mobile overlords will love the foundation this game already has to offer.
I only came to this thread as a result of hearing news on things changing in the future, only to see words, and as another person posted previously in this thread, actions speak louder than words. I get it, building a team around an existing game is going to take time; so I’m all for taking one’s time with such a delicate process as this, and with the increased interactivity from @monty1 and @Tiggs … Its been a sight for sore eyes, but I will continue to remain skeptical until I can see some action taking place. I love this game, but the egregious timers on crafting is what drove me away. A bit of TLC on that department … of course after the very much needed New Player Experience improvements… Here’s to hoping some of my main issues with the game can at least be discussed and/or reiterated on in the future. Would absolutely love to return to the game, and would love to return to the amazing community that is Boundless in form, but as I don’t wish to pile hundreds of qualms and issues I have with the game onto its new owners before they have had a chance to familiarize themselves with the game, I will leave it there for now. I will definitely be checking back and seeing if/when more details get released.
Good luck to @monty1 and their crew; hopefully we don’t tread down that deep, terrible microtransaction-laden path that is mobile-style monetization.
i was wondering why monty said there are 8 games. on the hp you only see5 games, lets include boundless now, then 2 are missing. what are the games not showing!?
acquire games that missed their market (or get bankrupt?) sounds more like make a good deal and some money instead expierence in developing/programming.
Yeah, but top-level management being able to effectively hire people who can get things done is important.
I’ve been looking into this a bit too, since it’s fun to explore where things might go and to try to understand the situation as well as possible. Also because there is a mixed bag of green, yellow, and red flags all over the situation.
If you take a look at Monty’s LinkedIn profile, he has extensive industry experience, including some high positions in high profile companies. This tells me he’s got at least some idea of what he’s doing both generally and specifically for management.
That said, looking at the… six previous companies he’s got listed as “Founder” on there, only one of which appear to have done anything notable enough that I can even find it online right now, I do feel a little wary of his success rate, but those are all 10+ years old things - ancient in internet time - and also he’s got enough reputation that people keep starting companies with him and working for him, so it’s unlikely he’s not at least some kind of successful.
Summary of my opinion: He is experienced at navigating both the game industry and business, and he appears to be successful enough that people follow him between his different ventures, including ones that he wasn’t founder of. He, and Monumental, appear to be focused on taking the risks required to nurture a floundering project and then hoping for big payouts later.
I only know details about Boundless and Crowfall, but both of those are projects that I have personally thought about as huge potential, but huge difficulty to get fixed up, so I don’t think they’re in this for a quick payout.
If you research Tiggs…she has great experience as well. I trust her judgment here as she has put her kneck on the line for the players in the past.
Monty appears to know how to engage players and retain them. While I will not immediately return to boundless or jump into crowfall…I suspect that boundless will change greatly for better and for worse. Old players may hate the direction but the game may see new players on a larger scale.
To me, it’s a reset switch. We can only go up from here tbh. I hate change, I hate learning new things, I hate being put into unknown situations but this is a necessary evil…for 2023…we shall see what happens. I’ll just be nervously excited for what the team starts doing.
You do realize that you can’t just flip a video game like it’s real estate? Once you account for the actual acquisition cost and to put a team together along with monthly salaries, it will be a few years before they can make alot of money. And this assumes they execute properly on strategy.
Boundless isn’t selling alot of copies right now. And whatever is made from the shop isn’t enough to pay for an entire monthly salary of developers who are working on this.
This is hardly a “good deal” as you put it. And not one that they stand to make money immediately on. This is the classic example of playing the long game.
So, I don’t know how big this fight would be. But as a sort of a dark side of the humble bundle thing, there are probably still (only?) thousands of keys floating around out there for well below any price that the game is likely to go on “sale” for.
$2 keys, sometimes less.
I’m not sure how those keys were generated, or what. I’m not even 100% sure if the bundle was the only legit source of those keys. But if someone had a legit number of how many actual usable keys were floating around, and they wanted to start making money on game sales - it might be worth trying to clean some of that up.
Assuming that every thing is legit all around so a known number of valid, usable keys exist it seems like every one of those cleaned off the market is another $whatever.99 sale via steam right?
IDK just a fanciful thought, I never stopped to really wonder how many keys got issued/sold. Also I would guess that a lot more sales at key sites were for additional accounts or giveaways than to new players anyways.
There are so many messages here and I don’t wanna go through them all, so if this has already been asked, can someone direct me there.
But I really have one question and one request. Considering this will take some time to process and likely take some time to get up to speed anyway, are you already aware of what it is you want to fix or implement first? I saw that Blueprints are in the scope but anything else “shorter” term?
Also, could we have a separate news post of the most asked and answered questions? Like a Q&A or TLDR post because trying to find the answers here is a bit of a pain!
Never the less, welcome and thank you! We have high hopes and very hyped. Literally returned to the game on Saturday after hearing the news!
