I was not complaining. I was stating a fact. If another comparable game comes on the market, most of what is left of the player base will evaporate.
Companies acquire other companies all the time. When a grocery store gets acquired by another grocery chain, they don’t get to wait a year to stock the store. When a shipping line gets acquired by another shipping line, they don’t get to wait a year to deliver the packages. Companies don’t put everything on hold while things transition because they will lose all their customers.
MMOs are Software as a Service, or SaaS applications. They are not standalone software that you buy on a disk and never update. You can have a pay once model for a standalone product, or you can have a continuous payment scheme that comes from actually performing a service. You cannot have it both ways.
The owners of Boundless have both taken advantage of market capture to ignore their customers.
Obviously Monumental is having to deal with Sony and the PS side of things. I am sure that takes some time to get finalized. I assumed that would be the case as I have heard horror stories about dealing with Sony.
That said, @CleoStJames isn’t completely wrong here. It has been a very long time since we had any new content. Now to say Monumental is ignoring the community or trying to take advantage of people in some way I think is a bit off base, however I can’t say the same for James.
Regardless, having spoken to Tiggs and seeing her most recent post, I know Monumental is working to get things in a state where they have full control over the game and its assets.
I guess the primary reason why I “white knight” for the game now is that…
For those 2 years that Wonderstruck had the game in maintenance mode, the game with virtually unplayable for myself and several others. We were having daily connection issues and rubber banding.
Monumental took over and the game has run smooth as glass for me since. Only time I get any lag now is when we have a full 20 person hunt team.
So as far as I’m concerned, the game is fixed for me and I could continue to play it as is for another year or two.
I think many people are still jaded and while I know Monumental is working hard on getting things straight and even after I had a convo with Tiggs, it doesn’t remove how jaded WonderStruck left me and I can only imagine many of us feel the same way.
As for running smooth as glass, I lag every time I portal into a few spots that I never have before and I’m on fiber so while I know it could be my connection I highly doubt it as it didn’t happen until recently.
I agree though, I can play the game as it is for a good bit, but totally understand how others could feel differently.
I was one of those others. I had to quit using EU and AUS worlds entirely at the time because it was so bad.
Have you noticed which server cluster this is most common on? Networks are complicated things, I can’t play amazon’s New World game at all due to lag, but boundless, swtor, wow, eso, ff14 all run without issue right now so it’s a network issue somewhere between me and them. (And plenty of other people have no issue, and others do, it’s frustrating i understand)
I use other MMOs to gauge as my internet is unconventional so sometimes i do have issues on my end, but if so it tends to effect multiple games not just one.
The game was put on hold before they acquired it. And they acquired it, publicly stating that they had other projects and priorities, and that it would stay on hold until they’re ready. For which they gave a minimum time frame.
Certain people may be unhappy about this. Certain people are always trying to read in something “extra”. And certain people act as though that’s an appointment, fully seeming to expect a 100% functional and live operation by the date they’ve calculated as that “minimum”.
Nonetheless Monumental continues to visibly move forward, and the game is quite alive. Not socially thriving, perhaps, but working according to (for the most part) the current spec.
For many of us, this is enough. As a service provider, Monumental is currently providing precisely the service they promised. As a developer, they’re developing at exactly the level they indicated for this time frame.
Nah but more seriously, maybe these people have not been seen for months BECAUSE of the lack of updates. I mean it sounds like you’re blaming people for not wanting to play a game which has been in a coma for several years.
I’ve personally been spending some quality time on a public Minecraft mega-server featuring MMORPG modded features. MC was certainly not a game I thought I’d ever try, but still, at any time of the day and night, I can tell you that there are easily more people on the server than there are players on the totality of Boundless (survival, creative, sovereign included).
This is an imaginary number. There has never been a solid consensus on how many players there actually are. No one will ever agree to any number thrown out there even if it came from a dev.
That said, Minecraft is quite fun especially with the big modpacks like All the Mods etc.
The point was that when I was playing Boundless, I could almost hear crickets. In the MC server, I’m went to a corner of the map where I expected to be alone to learn the game at my pace, and yet I always meet new people, got active neighbors, etc.
Certainly not what I expected when I started playing that game. Long-term, I won’t stay there either, though, but I’m glad I tried to get my own opinion of what’s great and what’s lame about MC.
Makes me thing there are so many things I wish Boundless had.
For me… we have a game that works sure there’s lag spike’s but we can build,we can hunt, we can create. Other games pale in comparison. I am happy that its a place i can go and enjoy something thats mine.
Try All the Mods some time. Great stuff… I thought that might be your point. My point was more the fact no one knows how many people are actually playing. Im pretty confident the Steam charts are pretty close and I usually double that to account for PS players.
That said, Minecraft still has what 141 million active players worldwide and if you put that into Boundless math … that 300 million as 141 million are concurrent.
Also a bad comparison though if you ask me when talking population. Throw everyone in Boundless on one planet and having neighbors would be a thing. I played on some really large Mega servers and if they had their maps set to an unlimited size I seldom ran into many people except in their hubs as I usually built way way out.
For the record, I’m strictly talking about the benefit of a better post system that keeps relevant posts at the top of separate categories. I don’t think anyone should have to search topics with this system, especially when they’re heated over an issue.
A lot of good points are made on separate threads covering the same topic. As long as we’re commenting on the second one, the first is getting cold, then when the second one drifts off a third pops up. Not enough posts get the visibility they could/should.
