is the a main story one needs to finish then?
the progression / openness of the world is very much like valheim, even though it has quests. you can get to most places (digging, gliding…) you just won’t survive there. the main story is ‘get all the stuff to make all the stuff’
Yes, there are quests that need to be completed to advance the “campaign”.
Another sci-crafting game that I like to play now and then is called Planet Nomads. Sadly, the company ran out of money and abandoned the game. It was recently removed from the steam store as well.
The game as is, is playable. It has some issues, but is still fun.
since I don’t want to go off-topic on the other thread, I’ll post it here, which seems the right thing.
Microblocks in Minecraft require a mod, whereas Vintage Story integrates them seamlessly into the base game. Vintage Story’s building mechanics surpass those of Minecraft and Boundless combined, offering a richer experience.
Setting up a Minecraft server can be cumbersome due to the need to install various mods, unlike Vintage Story, where you can easily add mods to your server and allow players to download them with just one click. Furthermore, Vintage Story’s ability to save constructions as blueprints and import them elsewhere simplifies the sharing of creations.

While each game—Boundless, Minecraft, and Vintage Story—has its unique features, Vintage Story’s ongoing development contrasts with Boundless’s lack of updates, potentially allowing other games to surpass it. Ultimately, the debate over which game is superior boils down to personal preference
Intriguing screenshot, I think I need to take a look st this one myself.
Point is still there, that nothing replaces the persistent universe for me. I enjoyed Vintage Story and some of the mechanics. Building wise I don’t think it surpasses modded Minecraft, but to that of course is an opinion. Heck, I’ll go back and play Vintage Story again just to do it again.
Framed Blocks which allow for all the slopes and angles chiseling does, Microblocks which allows for everything Vintage Story does in the end nothing can compete with that. Sadly though I just can’t get past the look of Minecraft anymore. But, modded Minecraft is simply incredible, if someone makes another game in say UE5 or just upgraded graphics with modding at the level of Minecraft has it would be pretty much the game we want.
This is always the case with most games, but since those of us on this forum are so drawn to Boundless… obviously we just want it to succeed. As far as surpassing it, I have yet to find a game that has given me the same persistent universe the allows me to purchase my own space that extends that universe in an open sandbox with decent building.
Believe me, myself and many others with me have been on the lookout for a replacement.
I’ve gone back and played many games…
Creativerse
7 Days to Die
ARK
Astroneer
Craftopia
Vintage Story
Castleminer Z
Eco
Fortresscraft
Miscreated
Night of the Dead
Nightingale
No Mans Sky
Enshrouded
Novus Enceptio
Dual Universe
Palworld
Savage Lands
Solace Crafting
Space Engineers
Stars End
Valheim
Grounded
Forever Skies
I could go on and on, I’ve tried to replace this game, but it’s just that unique. Sad that it just sits here and wastes away.
There’s a new game on PSVR 2 called CyubeVR which looks interesting. It’s a voxel game like Minecraft, etc. I might get it as it’s getting some good praise at the moment.
I love building but I’ve never been in Boundless for that - most important thing is the persistent, open universe with no ready content (NCs, quests); a universe to explore and survive, that throws at us things like dangerous creatures, meteors, toxic atmospheres, hunger, bad weather etc.
I would love to find another game offering that, but there is none as far as I’m concerned.
Lightyear Frontier is out now, on Game Pass too. Cute game, farm sim on an alien world in a big mech, been following it for awhile, previous name was Farmech, friendly dev team, seems to be a charming game. Very chill, no combat or time limits.
Dragon’s Dogma II out Friday, been looking forward to it for awhile. Looks like a better, larger version of the first, and the first had probably my favorite combat in any game. Am reading from leaks that the combat is more difficult this time though! But that the pawns are vastly improved.
I’m currently pre-installing it on PS5. I have to say, your tweets about the original helped me decide to get it. It looks really good.
I do love me some 7 Days…
Planet Crafter is a great lil game!! Excitedly waiting their Co-op update
My First Voxel and what started my love for building things!
Now to get @bucfanpaka to come back to Boundless.
Its a fun game with friends that’s for sure. There are a ton of great voxel games out there, but I’m a sucker for a zombie game.
Same! The first Resident evil one of my all time faves
I love it. And yeah, the co-op update would make the game so much easier. There are some places I have issue with.
And Planet Nomads. I finished the campaign last night. Knee jerk, crappy ending. But at least the game is still enjoyable.
