Yup, why they didn’t share more via API is beyond me. This is how quite a few of us have kept track of the planets and active players per world. Like the one Host and others have posted previously.
When i found out the world list API does not actually include exos, i was very sad. I had hoped I could offer the community a live discord feed of it again…
Just to clarify, the blocker here is definitely not cost. Running the game as-is would not cost much infrastructure-wise and myself and others would happily cover that negligible cost.
This is all about Monumental letting the game waste away while they say nothing and do nothing. If they were to open source the game, it would be online again in a month.
Id beg to differ in the sense that the universe auto-scaled up but can’t auto-scale down other than the sovereign worlds coming and going and with the lack of players the ability to pay for the full-size universe doesn’t seem to cover costs to me.
I dont have any proof to that though, but if you have proof otherwise, let me know.
Lotus, i think you misread Dhusk’s comment. They were saying that if the game were to become opensource, they’d be down to bankroll the server costs. Even if others wouldn’t.
Oh I saw it. I was mostly just commenting on how it’s not a cost holding things up.
I think its not JUST cost holding it up, but I do think its a contributing factor.
I don’t think they ever had any intention of updating the game. They only said they did to inject a shot of hopium into the mix to keep the money flowing. So far as I can tell, Monumental is like a game retirement home. Games go there to die.
Naw, cost isn’t an issue. Maintaining the infra to support the main planets and then allowing the infra to scale based on exos and sovereigns wouldn’t be much. Source: I just completed a project for a very large financial services company that utilizes auto-scaling AWS infra including data storage, identity management and much more. I had access to the utilization and cost dashboard in AWS.
None of this is knowledge of how much it costs to run Boundless for Monumental in its current setup on AWS. Not saying you are wrong but having access to AWS costs at several companies in the past and currently with my company I see where some costs savings could happen.
We do know quite a bit about how the AWS infra works for boundless. James went over it in the past. I believe it was in context of a conversation talking about complexity of handling the handshake between servers to make going through portals/warps instant. I can try and find it but I’m extremely confident cost is in no way a blocker here. I’d personally pony up quite a bit and, if needed, I’m confident others in the community would contribute as well.
Wait Boundless is a mobile game?

They own this company now as well.
Game Circus and Kongregate were known.
Never heard of Game Circus.
Looked it up, omg that’s some quality games/
That address is old information. That building was sold last year, and they no longer have an office there. There seems to currently be no “real” location.
