I assume that the original idea was to make the very big portals rare and special and maintained by a large guild and so on…
but the reality turned out to be different and that ain’t going anywhere, might as well add the option to pack them with shards.
the challenge is in getting the rare expensive shards and get enough traffic to make it worth the effort, putting them into a slot every few days is just an annoying chore and can clash with real life. if not a entirely new mechanic, at least add more slots so every portal can be fuelled for max 4-5 weeks however many shards / amalgam / unicorn tears it takes

:open_mouth: you fancy im not spending those.

No, I dont have enough currency to upkeep Request Baskets for Oort/

I try to overlook stuff I can as much as possible but this man… this… why put something in the game which most (if not all) people find useless, not worth it, or can’t use especially for it’s intended purpose. Examples are abundant - fertilizers, amalgam, and the farmed fuel blocks (partially though only imo).

Can’t you just craft one or bulk if you don’t need them all?

Most people is obsessed with mass crafting even for 1 piece.

I would like to start the bidding: 100c

Because mass crafting is the most efficient resource-wise to craft? Granting a bonus to output that’s the largest when you mass-craft?

Take Oort for example:

  • Single
    • 1 Rough produces 10 Oort Shards
  • Bulk
    • 4 Rough produces 50 Oort Shards
  • Mass
    • 18 Rough produces 250 Oort Shards

So by that math, if I did 18 separate single crafts of Oort Shards, I would only be getting … 180 Oort Shards. Doing the mass craft grants me an ADDITIONAL 70 Oort Shards on TOP OF what I would get using just normal standard crafts. 4 Bulk Crafts uses 16 Rough Oort for 200 Oort Shards, if I did a fifth, I’d be using 20 Rough Oort total for the result of a single Mass Craft.

Does anyone know what the actual drop rate is for meteorite ichor? For awhile I got it with almost every meteor on exos and then at some point it basically just stopped. I’m wondering if there are criteria I messed up, like luck, maybe it’s only found in dormant meteors, something else? Is there a % known?

But getting more items as the output is not always the best option.
If we are talking about time then you would save more crafting only 1 instead of the whole mass craft and waiting hours.

My point is that a lot of people need only one sign and then go and hit mass craft, the rest is just stored for “a next time I may use it”.

In the case of oort why wait until the last moment to craft it?

Like you have days to buy or gather aenough and all you have to do is dump them on your extractor and forget about them.

I needed 4 signs for all 255 colors, so 1020 signs. I wasn’t going to place all of them in one go, sure, but I was going to use well over 50 at the time. But since I had to wait I did some chiseling then it was past my bedtime before they finished. That was a couple days ago. I haven’t had time to log in (until right now). So at least I will have them all crafted. It’s such a letdown to spend all of my time gathering resources just to put projects off several days until I have time to play again.

And as @SephirothWS mentioned the amount of resources required is greatly reduced especially when dealing with large scale projects.

For 1020 signs I would need:

  • Single (1,020 crafts at 1m24s ea)
    • 5 Plain Glass per - 5,100 Plain Glass total
    • 2 Glue per - 2,040 Glue total
    • 1 Ink per - 1,020 Ink total
  • Bulk (102 crafts at 14m1s ea)
    • 40 Plain Glass per - 4,080 Plain Glass total
    • 16 Glue per - 1,632 Glue total
    • 8 Ink per - 816 Ink total
  • Mass (21 crafts at 1h10m ea) - Includes 30 bonus signs.
    • 180 Plain Glass per - 3,780 Plain Glass total
    • 72 Glue per - 1,512 Glue total
    • 36 Ink per - 756 Ink total

To make it all more easily comparable…

  • Mass: 3.6 glass per sign
  • Bulk: 4 glass per sign
  • Single: 5 glass per sign

Bulk is 20% more efficient than single, Mass is 28% more efficient than single (or 10% more efficient than bulk, however you want to look at that)

Well in your case it really needs to be mass craft, I was really wondering if you actually need it because I talked to some people in game before and they really didn’t realize that some times it’s better to lose a few materials to get just what you need in a shorter time.

I read that someone suggested better coils and I think that would work great, since progression is big part of the game, having some lucent coils that could reduce even more the crafting times would be amazing.

Or maybe let us mass craft but split the output in 2 or 3 batches over all the crafting time.

Hopefully one day there will be better options to keep big portals alive longer.

Now it takes too much time to fuel big portals and missing big portal is one of the worst punishments in game because of reopening cost.

I gave up keeping big portal alive after I forgot to fuel it several times. In then end it was for me easier to move to another planet and keep small portals open over there. And didn’t need to anymore participate as much to economy and hunts.

If big portals would be easier to keep alive it would be easier to get faster to places I visit frequently. Now I need to walk thru some portal hubs until those will die some day.

Added: If ichor would drop from lucent mobs there would be actually reason to hunt, now those mobs are just best to avoid.

I took a month off boundless to play on the latest ark map with friends. I put 16 week fuel in all my beacons, no worries. I topped the three portals I had (not a lot I know) knowing the 1x2s had 5 weeks and was resigned to the fact my 2x4 link to TNT was going to expire. I had tonnes of oort but only having a week meant I knew it would go. If I could have put more oort in I would have.
So yeah I agree that more slots as they get bigger is probably the least that we need, I totally feel for you guys that run the networks and massive hubs.

I agree, big portal misses are one of the worst punishments in the game.

The game shouldn’t be designed in such a way that people have to move planets, IMO. It fragments the community based on regions - unnecessarily.

IMO opening and reopening costs should be fixed at 50 shards for any size.

Listen, set up an Oort shard donation stand, let us know where it’s located, and you might be surprised at what the community is willing to do for each other😉

He wants to give you free oort

Yeah, I had a really good haul from hunting today. I could donate at least 2k shards, maybe more.

So the takeaway from this thread is:

Devs please give the players what they want by allowing big portals to hold more fuel.

There is no adequate rationale for not doing this.

The system does sort of have its intended effect I guess. I just don’t use portals at all (except once when moving a shedload of stuff between two distant beacons). The fuel source and maintenance demands not aligning with my enjoying the game means I just ignore it like some other in-game systems. So I don’t cause additional server load.
