Not locking skill trees would also drastically increase how long it should take to level stuff up. so that is the tradeoff, which it seems like the devs doesnt want.

Or you just stroll into a settlement, sell the stuff you don´t need(e.g. drops from killed creatures) and buy stuff you need but can´t build yourself?

Those games have indeed a quite excessive amount of sub-steps within their economy loop but I think that B< will go for a way more compact scheme in that regards:

Like I said before you could draw a line for the hardcore people.
Maybe the time to level up something increases for every additional tree after the 3rd tree you chose.
Or maybe after a certain amount of total nodes you learned in every tree combined which would equal 3 trees on max.
There are easy ways to make it dynamic so casuals and hardcore players can enjoy the same system.

I’m sorry, but I don’t understand how people have gotten the impression that you are forced to do crafting?!

Everyone can pretty much do everything - someone without the hunter profession can still hunt, the same as someone without the crafting profession can still craft - they just won’t have the additional perks and benefits that the profession specialisations will offer.

Boundless, fundamentally at it’s core, is a game about interaction with other players. I honestly don’t see what the problem is if you want to be a hunter or explorer or miner or gatherer or crafter. You just find other people that have different profession skills to you and trade with them for better goods than you already have.

You mean with the gear you dont have because you just yourself said you shouldnt be able to craft anything without being a crafter? with the weapons you dont have? you could sell materials but if you arent a miner or a gatherer then i guess you wont be much help at that

Seems people have gotten into a habit that really bothers me. Blanket statements. you dont KNOW if everybody can do everything.

i do believe teamwork should be encouraged definitely and for some things you should only be able to do it with a group (large are of beacons, titans, bossfights, dungeons) but what is being argued right now by Vastar is the whole “everything should come exclusively from crafting”

Please do not use blanket statements. every time you do a kitty dies.

So you think that as there is a builder profession, no one (other than a builder) will ever be able to break a block or place one in the world? Please, give me a break…

But to avoid Ad-hominem attacks, i think its fine if you can argue for your opinion. i dont think neither @Vastar nor I are arguing for how it IS but rather what we would like to see it as. You were the only one who came in and said “This is how it is!”.

“Hand the devil your pinkie and he will take the whole arm”. This is what happens when i got summoned to discuss. i will discuss with pure focus on logic and facts, everything else is secondary. Not deliberately trying to offend anyone which i assume some will feel. Just not holding back either. So by all means @Stretchious i would love to hear about what YOU would like to see the system as. and argue for why you believe it should be so. But seriously very few things bothers me more than plain out statements like “this is what the game is”. I bought into it back when it was Oort and i expected a full on RPG. Doesnt mean i dismiss anything building related with the argument “I dont like it therefore that isnt at all what the devs want”

Just remarking that if this gets out of hand I will lock the thread untill people calm down (I am using time I could be using to play crypt of the necrodancer so don’t anger me I am already slightly irritated)

Well I´d imagine that in B< you start as lvl 1 character like in any other game:

Then you´d proceed to kill/mine with the basic starter tools until you get your first skillpoint which you either invest into crafting to unlock better weapons/tools or into another tree so you have an advantage in killing/mining stuff to be able to supply players that have picked crafting as first profession.
But yeah, “anything” was maybe a phrased a bit harsh, “anything but the most basic tools/weapons” would be more adequate.


Those additional benefits could very well include the abbility to process better materials, meaning that you can craft with tier1 materials by default but are unable to process any tier2 materials.
