For the second step, in which direction are you facing when hanging over the edge slightly? Are you creeping forward and peering over the edge of the block, or are you walking backwards and positioning the cursor that way?

Backwards at an angle - seems to be most pronounced at 45°

The selection outline shows it offset by a few pixels (notice how my cursor is a ways into the middle block, but the bottom block is selected)

Oh! It’s the vertex noise for the natural blocks! Behaves as expected for crafted (straight-edged) blocks. (Is that just a vertex shader?)

It looks like the issue here is that the selection box doesn’t show up very clearly on darker blocks, but you can still select the block on the bottom, so it’s fine. A bug has been logged about the selection box being hard to see, however.
