Smart stacks are dumb

Can we please please please have smart stacks actually be smart. So that when I have a stack of iron bars and stack of silver bars, adding silver bars to that inventory won’t just dump them in the iron bars stack…

It’s getting really hard to keep things organized, especially considering we have too many recipes that take ‘any’ alloy, for instance :stuck_out_tongue:

And also let us drag items onto the same items and actually have them stack when you do so from a smart stack. Open smart stack, grab 60 copper bars, drag onto 100 copper bar stack, and they exchange instead of stack. Open smart stack, grab 60 copper bars, drag into your inventory, then drag onto the 100 copper bar stack, and they go into a smart stack together.

This might actually be a bug, but it’s definitely super annoying.

shhh…
no stack shaming please.

They try and do their best. These poor little fellers.

Yep they are dumb

With 900 titanium alloy shoved into them, they’re neither poor nor little!

they only go into the first available stack in your inventory.
A good way around this is to separate each of your ore types and then spread them out inside the smart stack.
Once you have more than 100 in a smart stack or before you take the gold out, just split one silver into all the other slots so the only thing that can add to that smart stack is silver
This is what I do.
I know it’s more time consuming but at least it’ll suppress the frustration.

Huh. That’s actually not a bad idea! It’s really dumb it’s required, but as a workaround that’s pretty good

That’s what I’m doing too atm, but I shouldn’t have to.

The algorithm that checks for matches should consider a “perfect match” meaning type and color a priority and make a smart-stack out of a 100stack or add it to a matching smart-stack with empty space before just dumping it in the first block-type matching stack. This means it would become a bit slower by checking more conditions but also better.

Considering your target inventory can never be larger than 36 entries, I don’t think the ‘slower’ part would even play into it at any point.

Unless you manage to want to transfer 1000 stacks per second :stuck_out_tongue:

on the player side definitely not, on the server side with 100s or one day hopefully 1000s of players it kind of does

That would not be a change I would want. It would take more inventory space and I love my inventory space. I like I can carry all my “like” items in one stack. Last thing this game needs is another nerf.

Well… I love smart stacks. I have way less inv management in the fields and way more inventory space when i’m mining or gathering.
I can sort it afterwards into proper shelves. Takes like 3-5 minutes usually from completely full inventory.
I would be really upset if suddenly i would be running out of inventory all the times cause stuff stopped stacking up nicely.

I never said that it had to be sorted only in matching stacks. Of course when those are full, then other stacks would be used. And manually combining them should also be much easier. But a preference for an already existing stack isn’t going to have any impact on what you can carry.

I think I spend like 1hr minimium trying to organize my shelves/inventory.
‘Stack all items’ button would be awesome.

Having smart stacks stack according to “Best match” instead of “First match” would already help a lot.

Maybe a choice switch in inventory screen.
Best Match and First Match options to chose.

Actually this would be always useful as long as when best match is not available, first match will be used!

It doesn’t even have to be that complex. “Is there another stack/smart stack of this item we’re moving, put it in there, if not, put it wherever”

Defining what is ‘the right stack’ could be configurable. But finding a stack that fits from best to least shouldn’t be that hard.

Moving my 100 silver bars into storage, if there’s already a “Silver Bar Smart Stack”, put it in there. Otherwise I don’t care. I mean… That seems logical, no? lol

Well, yes it is. Problems begins when you have full stack of silver bar and half the stack of gold bar. Should the system now put silver into gold?
Imho yes and you can manually split it, but that would actually be inconsistent with what you expect from your inventory system.
This minor inconsistency could become a small problem… Don’t know really.

Can we have the OPTION to turn smart stacking ON or OFF per item type?

PLEASE!!!

I hate smart stacking! Items that I dont use for building, I honestly dont care about.
For example, I smart stack grass seeds. But items I do care about, I like to keep separate, like the diff color of rocks.

I moved the location of all my storage and that didnt even take an hour. If its taking you that long everything to put your inventory into shelves than you need to find a better way because i never spend more that a handful of minutes doing it.
Overall I’m happy with the way the stacks work now, but being able to switch this suggested feature on and off would be a welcome addition.

currently it is set up to be as condensed as possible (which i like) but when it comes to non-player inventories, like shelves, it would be interesting if there was an option for sorted stacks… or maybe just a sort button to sort out and group together like items / colors.

My sorting method is to move all of what im sorting into one inventory while accessing another inventory with an appropriate amount of space available… then i open each smart stack and shift click all of the, say copper ore, to the other inventory… once all the copper is out i bring it back via click and drag and start on the next ore. I keep going till i have stacks that only contain one type of ore each
