Steam Review of new player

https://steamcommunity.com/profiles/76561198131498810/recommended/324510/

Seems worth looking at.

Many other reviews upset that early game crafting takes so long to do anything, 20 seconds for this, 5 minutes for that. I’ll admit, cooking meat takes way too long at the start.

Enemies do FAR too much damage in T1/T2 worlds, and most people don’t realize your tools do pitiful damage to them without a slingbow. They try to kill them with a totem or axe.

I don’t know what platform they are using, but it was clear to me when I first started playing that it was an MMO (“multi-player”). Not sure why that was a surprise.

I really don’t understand when people mention “all these microtransactions”. Every other game I play can destroy a paycheck with one or two clicks of a button lol…you really have to dig into the “shop” in BL to even find the TWO things you can buy. We can’t buy pets, cars, storage, backpacks, dragons, auras, gold, or anything else like you can in other MMOs. :woman_shrugging:

I don’t think it’s fair that people who play the game for 20 minutes can leave a detrimental review. I waited until I had over 1000 hours. I wonder if some of these people just want to play for a sec to write an article for $, are trying to harm the game, or what. I find this odd.

They rage-quit after a spitter hit them? What are they used to playing… Candy Crush? Farmville? Even in Minecraft, Enderman shows up to kill you in after a little bit.

  • I’m only making these points because it seems like there are some malicious posters on Steam. I don’t know if this is one or not, but if it doesn’t make sense then…

There should be a minimum amount of time that someone has played before they can write a review. This would remove the harmful, misleading reviews.

I do remember being really scared of the enemies when I first started. Specifically the wildstock, cuz it only took a few headbutts to kill you and each headbutt would disorient you from the knockback. The disorientation is amplified in a new game cuz you don’t have all the controls down yet.

Maybe if the charge attack was way more telegraphed on the basic wildstocks and their move speed during it was a lot slower, it would be a better enemy for new players

I don’t think many of the people who populate this forum realize where the gaming market really is today.

It’s pretty telling given the posts on these forums and the posts across many other gaming forums.

This game is fun. Do not get me wrong. But in context of other games out today, it is an absolute chore to play.

It plays almost the same as all the other MMORPGs out there, just a little different and will a little less content.

All of them are grindy and have a learning curve.

i think those are the most inportent reviews its easy to give the game a thumbs up when you got 100+ hours but if so many people are getting discouraged right at the starting gate then that means someting needs to be tweaked.

i remeber when WoW started doing buy a max level char followed by the pet and mount shop it kicked up a big storm over there too the trick was the devs just did not give a ■■■■ and the people yelling gave up. when people drop 50$ into a game the last thing they want to see is the game telling them they can get plots faster or keep there builds alive easyer by droping even more $$$ into the game…oh boy im just happy the game des not have a sub model the rage would be 10x worse then.

the time needed would need to be under the 2HR refund window otherwise steam is telling people "dont leave negative reviews "

true but other MMO’s like WoW or FFXIV spread out the grind or find a way to make it fun WoW i could log on and spend 2HR’s doing my daily grinding easy…boundless i cant even work up the will to mine or gather for 30 min

There’s a reason why this game has the population it does and why the people who were just given access to it are leaving the reviews they are.

This is standard data that is being given. We can look at what the numbers tell us or we can ignore them and make other excuses as to why people don’t play it/like it.

If someone claims they were shocked it’s multiplayer and got mad that they came across water or an enemy, then maybe they aren’t someone that enjoys this genre of game. A lot of the ones I play are MUCH harder, have a much larger learning curve, etc. I don’t know where BL is being marketed or to whom. If it’s on facebook to candy crush players, then maybe they won’t like this game.

The only thing BL could do to appease these types of complaints would be to make a couple of “creative mode” lush planets that have zero creatures, and they can quickly & easily do everything. Seems like this would defeat the entire premise of the game. I do think it would help if they would respond to the Steam posts.

They’ve expressly said they want to market towards the younger demographic. They said they would love if the current free players had a 50% purchase rate.

And MMOs aren’t grindy for the sake of grind. There’s a grind hidden by a well flushed out system of questing or rep gain or raiding or pvping etc etc.

Boundless brings nothing truly knew to this genre than Minecraft does. It’s a much better looking version and the portals are cool but my kids play Minecraft daily. Boundless isn’t doing anything that sets itself apart so taking a lot of standard features and adding things like time gates to them is not going to go over well with the type of people who are going to be on steam, by and large.

The only review I take seriously here is the bottom left one. The others seem slightly malicious. :woman_shrugging:

I agree with your points.

I personally feel like BL is unique and fun in it’s own way. In comparison to other MMOs, it feels very much like a playable alpha/beta - it need a hella ton of content.

Yea that picture says a lot, just not what you want it to say. 400+ people agree they would not want to spend money on the game. That’s frightening.

I cannot understand how these reviews are malicious. People are leaving exit feedback. Whether you agree with it is pointless. They took the time to fill out a review form. In customer service retention services, those who take the time to write something out are the ones you want to pay extra close attention to.

Edit: I see you other post and glad you agree w the points as I feel the data these people are leaving behind is very valid feedback. It’s critical for the dev team I think, even if negative

They logged on and then left a review. You can’t get the feel for an MMORPG in 5 minutes.

Sure but that’s still valuable info. The game didn’t capture them in that 5 minutes. What can be done to grab them for 5 minutes then?

A lot of the reviews are left by entitled people, That show up later in a game, and dont have the top (meta) tools handed to them. Games are supposed to have a grind. They are supposed to be kinda hard at the beginning. If not it would get crazy boring in just a little while.

Its the same crowd in every game. Game has a lil grind, people whine, game loses the grind, people get bored and leave.

After re-reading that review minerman linked to originally, I find it pretty funny. They’re almost all the same gripes I had when I first started but it was my first voxel game I’ve ever planned so it was different and fun for me. All the buggy mechanics the mention are complaints I had back in October. Vets at the time told me the lag charge was a feature and to make up a reason for why the attack was delayed. James later explained it was a limitation of coding/game engine physics.

MMORPGs don’t do that. It’s a slow burn/grind/etc.

:man_shrugging:If you agree with my points, then not sure why the counter arguments. The reviews are being left. Exit feedback is being left in folds. The devs will know what that exit feedback means and whether it’s important or not. I know what I think of it.
