what about carpet / rugs?
craftable from sackcloth / cotton cloth (pattern) + grass seeds (color giver) + wax / something to get structure?
size 1 square or more, able to cover all surface, but dont count toward mesh limit

In the short term you could maybe use some glass panes?

Carpets would probably have to be mesh, but if they can figure out how to make glass panes into non-mesh they could probably do the same thing with carpet.
