The LARGEST problem with boundless... crafting times... crafting times... crafting times

Can we call it a SandORP? since it’s a mix and neither at the same time. Like a video game new born

But A, no one, not even the Devs themselves, know how Private Servers are going to work. The Devs promised the Feature, without any idea how to impliment it.

But B, we DO know, it will mostly be a monthly rental fee, so people will have to be paying for it.

But C, if Private servers are acting just like a different game, and nothing like the original, then won’t that just be a different game all together?

I don’t see any issue with crafting times. 30 minutes is nothing in the grand scheme of things. You spend 30 minutes getting lost in Ultima or browsing the PS shopping hubs and trying to find out where you are. This isn’t an instant gratification type game. It is an MMO where people put time into their character and progression just like other MMO’s. This would also flat out crash the market from over saturation of everything.

Source? Seems like unsubstantiated nonsense.

This is true, and likely something people will do as a collective. You might be able to join the server of your favourite Boundless YouTuber - that is something popular in Minecraft.

Sure! I mean, it will still be the Boundless universe, but you’ll ‘hopefully’ be able to play it however you like. We’ll have to wait and see on Private Servers though. We know they’re in the pipeline, we just have to be patient on that front.

same with mincraft privet servers. thought that’s what you all wanted.

also isn’t that what you want? if you can set the rules and remove craft time then that’s a win!

Yeah the solution is simple: add more machines to your workshop!
Many recipes do not need Power, so I have a bunch of them without (but with Spark) and have at least 2 of most of the other machines with Power coils and am sure I will be adding more soon (thinking of a 3rd Mixer with Power, more Compactors with Power too, seems it’s mostly compacting lots of coal lately and of course clay).

If the crafting times would be gone I wouldn’t need multiple copies of the same machines. I wouldn’t be gathering more gems to make more power coils for all these machines, I wouldn’t need to re-arrange my workshop currently, etc., etc.

Yes, sometimes I dislike the waiting times, especially with the forge, but I have plenty to do in the mean time!

Regular stuff should be made in a breeze. You get the same thing as everyone else.
Advanced coils doesn’t make them more interesting, they require constant repair, you are not even gaining time in the end. (I still wonder what’s the purpose aside disco bling basements)

However, I would not mind waiting +3 hours for the same item, with my own branding and cosmetic variations.

The issue with current system is the game give you nothing worth of your time investement.
Centraforge was an attempt but some people couldn’t resist adding “square wheels” to the whole thing. Guess what? iron tools got a better ratio for the same use.

do we need craft times? so far 59% yes 12% no. sounds pretty conclusive to me. I had better get back to work before I get fired and then can’t afford to play boundless.

Once these private servers arrive, depending on price, I will want to create 2 of them! One that can connect to the rest of the worlds, one that can not, just to play around in and test things…

Wait! What?? I need to test that…

So shorter crafting times on simple items, smaller repair costs on Advanced Coils, more item customisation (perhaps in the form of naming or coloration?) and a general look at tool balance.

I agree on the latter parts, though I don’t personally agree with the shorter times on simple crafting. Time commitments add another dynamic to being a crafter - uninteresting on their own, but part of a larger, more complicated system - ie; calculating when one thing ends and another starts, how many machines you need for an effective assembly line, and so on.

Crafting certainly needs balancing though, because as of right now there are far too many inconsistencies.

The label of ‘sandbox mmo’ is already correct in describing what the game is. The issue is that people with ‘minecraft’ expectations (sandbox game, different from sandbox mmo) expect something different, or are unaware of the meaning in relation to MMOs.

“Sandbox MMO” is a single term with a separate meaning, different from “Sandbox” by itself (or ‘sandbox game’) which would be your creative mode Minecraft.

This was, actually, the first ‘type’ of MMO to be popular (Ultima Online, for example), and the term was created later (when things like WoW showed up) to differentiate ‘sandbox MMOs’ (no quests, players can do whatever, be whatever) from ‘themepark MMOs’ (game is on rails, people must follow quests, pick a class and be locked to it).

Full explanation in this old post,

Extra reading for defining the terms and their historical usage:
https://www.reddit.com/r/MMORPG/comments/2rztoi/what_is_the_distinction_between_theme_park_and/

TL;DR: It’s confusing to people that are more familiar with Minecraft and recent MMOs (most of which have been themeparks), I blame the gaming press for reusing the ‘sandbox’ term in such a different context.

DONT TOUCH CRAFT TIMES!!!

The only break im able to get from this game is when i have a major crafting que going!
If you remove this i will die.

But yeh seriousky dont touch it, its a really good mechanic imho.

It also weeds out immature impatiant players.
Planning is all thats needed.

Whether anyone wants to admit it or not, in a world where Minecraft exists and is one of the most popular games of all time, if you try to play in the same space there are going to be expectations. While the steam descriptions are technically correct (this is a SandboxMMO by any reasonable definition of that term), the marketing (both the steam page as well as the head-start streamers) talked up how this is like minecraft that you can play with your friends (and has these other things, too). A lot of the systems in the game, as of this moment and certainly at release, feel somewhat out of place in that style of game, and the general ongoing issues with game balance further make it harder for the game to settle into what it really is. Until that gets worked out, these sorts of comparisons and the corresponding friction feel inevitable.

On the OPs topic, I think there does need to be crafting time for most stuff in the game, unless you made crafting not give EXP or something (which, please don’t do that). However, a lot of them feel like they could be 20-30% shorter baseline and not negatively affect game balance too much.

I don’t have a source, it’s something I read on the forums, people mentioning that Private Servers were promised, but that the Devs didn’t know how to impliment it, which is why we still don’t have them yet. That’s why we’re still waiting, cause they have no idea how they will work.

Except Minecraft Private servers you don’t have to pay for. You CAN pay a third party Server to host the Private Server, but you can create and host on your own computer as many private servers as you want 100% for free, with Minecraft not getting a single cent of it.

Secondly, if it’s a monthly fee, then I can’t effectively host my own server, just for me, to have fun my way, aka a singleplayer game. Especially if I don’t have any money. So no, it isn’t what I want. I want ‘Boundless’ to be better, not a private server based on Boundless.

Third, if it works like Minecraft Private servers, then only PC Players will be able to buy and host servers, as you can’t buy and host a server on a PS4 console, which is what I play Boundless on, and whats more, if it IS like Minecraft, how would a PS4 user connect to a third party private server not connected to the main game?

Forth, we don’t KNOW the limits of what it can and can’t do! It might just be Boundless, but with only 1 planet and you have no control over it. It could be a copy of all the planets released right now and just be a seperate game. It could be a private world connected to the main game where the renter and people on his friends list can port back and forth between the rented world and back into the main game, bringing back any and all resources and items on the rented world, aka Terraria style. No one knows!

Secondly, “Just wait for Private Servers” is such a sad way of think. Instead of improving, changing, and making the game grow. You want to force people away from the game, and keep the game stagnant and force people to make mods for private servers instead of improving the base game. That’s disappointing. And that’s coming from me, who people say is the most toxic person on the forums. If even I’m disappointed in your line of thinking, that’s saying something about it.

Oh yeah, I was just joking with that made up name. For laughs. Sorry if I upset you.

Private servers are one way for the game to grow, change and improve. Apparently the part that you have an issue with is the ‘waiting’ part, I suppose.

You didn’t. I just figured I’d throw the explanation here since it was coming up a lot in the discussion. I just replied to you randomly instead of any of the other people involved in the terminology discussion. :stuck_out_tongue:

The multiplayer aspect of this game is perhaps the sole feature that sets it apart from other voxel based building games. Take away that and I really do have to ask, what is it about Boundless that makes it preferable to playing Minecraft?

I can’t tell if you’re serious or not. Are you being serious? Cause if you are… That’s very very sad.

Cause most likely Private Servers will basically be a secondary game with no connection at all to the base game. It’s like saying a Custom Made Starcraft 1 map, helped made Starcraft 1 a better game and to grow, change, and improved.

No, no it didn’t. The Private Server would grow, with people making mods, admin features, protections, and changes. But the base game wouldn’t change from ANYTHING that effects Private Servers, except maybe not even being updated as often, if everyone leaves the base game to go play on Private Servers.

WoW didn’t improve with all the Private Servers that added epic events and fixed bugs. Most F2P games were ruined by Private Servers, like Maple Story 1. Even Minecraft, while it grows and expands, some servers never update and still uses old content over the newer one. Especially the modded Feed the Beast content.

Private Servers, of any kind, never help grow a game, except for an FPS like Battlefield, at which point you can change very few things, and can’t funamentally modify it to be very different from the original game in any way, shape, or form, as you are just renting a server the game company is hosting and has full access to and not you.

Portals anywhere, able to explore multiple planets (Which should have different enviroments and content and not just recolored of the exact same thing over and over 42 times), walk around in just underwear, the Resources regenerate after a while so you aren’t forced to go farther and farther away to mine new resources, and generally a lack of the thousands of content that Minecraft has over Boundless.

The Multiplayer aspect, which even Minecraft HAS as well in their free multiplayer servers, being the default and always on instead of singleplayer, Worlds that aren’t Random every time you go to a new land, and coins and shops, are the only 3 differences between Boundless and Minecraft. And even those 3 differences, Multiplayer servers are free and easy to set up and join. And Mods add in Coins and shops, and stagnant worlds with Seeds as well.

Boundless isn’t special, it isn’t unique, it isn’t different. Heck there are even mods for Feed the Beast that opens portals to other places to travel with, even full Myst style books to whole different planets and worlds with different mechanics such as Coal instead of Water, and Dirt made out of Iron Ore instead of Dirt and Stone. Along with complicated machines, with different power sources and energy to use like Spark and Power, complicated machines to make, refine, build, and automate anything.

Heck Feed the Beast even adds in a block where you can even do C++ coding to do anything and everything with it, such a building and programing Chess into Minecraft and letting people able to play it. People.

Hell, look at THIS

Someone literally made a working computer, inside of minecraft, using JUST Redstone. No mods, private servers, plugins, or anything. Basic, old school Beta Minecraft back in 2013.

Boundless, at this rate, will NEVER catch up to Minecraft.

If we had no crafting times, I’d have a 1x1 plot factory, a 4x4 storehouse, and sooo many more plots to waste on things like camping out diamond mining areas.

It will only benefit the whales who can spend all day online, crafting endlessly, while the poor folks with only an hour or 2 will have no impact on the game during the rest of their day

Edit: who am i kidding. 3x3 or 5x5 storehouse. I cant have a 1x1 bit sticking out asymmetrical like that!
