It’s fairly easy to keep a beacon fueled. The lowest tier of fuel lasts a month and the next two tiers last much longer. Even if you only want to login a couple of times a year you can keep it going. If they don’t expire and just sit there you would soon end up with no place to play as every little starter beacon someone made and played at for an hour would still be there. Just a beacon, crafting table, workbench and thirty-two placed blocks all over the landscape. Plus all of the other abandoned places tying up the world. Look around and monitor some of these settlements and you will see huge chunks of land where the shop stands are never replenished, nothing new is ever added and there is never anybody around. That is land that somebody else might build a growing, changing place that is not static. People already express how empty the game seems with all of the abandoned places. Not having them expire would just exacerbate that issue for people as well.
Buying gear is easy. There is the knowledge tab, which lets you search for just about anything. True, it doesn’t show the details of forging on gear but it is fairly easy to get to the places selling it and check it out. Even easier, check out one of the large malls or reputable guild stores. Ask in chat and people will be more than willing to point you somewhere. Portals to all of these places are easy to find - they are marked in purple on your compass. Some of the big shops I know are good are EZPZ, Biggleton, Fantasy Tree and for good beginner stuff Noob Tools in DK Mall. There is also Boundless Universal Trade Tracker (butt.boundless.mayumi.fi) which shows you items for sale all across the game in a searchable database. And of course, there is the good neighbor policy that is prevalent in this game. Roving bands of higher level characters often give new players a selection of good gear. The DK mall guys stopped at my first little beacon and gave me and my wife a set of nice titanium gear. Whitelet and Karioos at EZPZ have often handed out nice beginner stuff as well. By the time you need more than titanium you should be able to search it out on your own with little trouble.
Actually the new weather quirks makes me wonder who in their right mind thought that was good game design. That should be a simple option exposed in graphics settings instead of tied to the forge…
I don’t like them. Design decisions like this make me question the direction this game is going. Oh wait, I have been questioning this, there’s STILL no public roadmap.
Inocuous quirks have an use. Depending on your forging method, one quirk obtained would take the place of another annoying one you might get, and chances of getting a second one are also reduced.
I want to have a rain stick so I can relax in the rain any time I want. Rain is my happy place.
I think that this is because the weather is eventually supposed to include status effects, like the ice shards causing status effects and/or damage. I know I saw a dev say this was the plan, but that was in a very very old post, so plans may have changed.
not really - weather effects are part of survival mode (or PvE if you like); so it must be there for everyone otherwise even playing ground doesn’t happen
so any options for players to affect weather through craftables is the right choice (not allowing players to switch it on/off)
true though that getting rain or snow seems funny choice (unless it makes mud and ice biome plants and fungi grow around you fast for gathering - that way we would play weather witches getting temporary ice/mud resources in any terrain)
I like them… they’re atmospheric… without them the worlds would feel even less alive to me so they definitely add a little more than the nothing you suggest.
However, in saying that, I have no problem with you being able to turn them off if you hate them.
Same here. I’m a fan and I like how they can temporarily change the look of builds and the environment. I’d say they give a very small boost to immersion too. But they don’t add anything to gameplay or the “challenge” of survival.
I strongly disagree.
Games should be fun and enjoyable.
Annoyances are detrimental to some players enjoyment of games.
Options allow different types of players to adjust settings so they can continue to enjoy gaming without the annoying stressors, which vary from person to person.
Locking snow removal behind an aspect of this game that I dont enjoy engaging in (locked behind Rng layers which is called forging, and buying items from player shops) adds multiple layers of annoyance/stress/uncomfortable-ness that I dont want to deal with.
I dont want stressors in a hobby. I need hobbies to help me de-stress from life, not add more stress.
Edit to add:
Changing weather should be a free option that even brand new players should have access to, I’m deeply disapointed at the choice to make players put in effort and hours or days worth of time, in order to disable/enable a visual annoyance to some.
WoW added toys so players could add weather effects, and UI options to disable effects.
I’m ok with boons to add effects. I’m not ok with requiring boons to disable snow effects.
If there wasnt so much ‘other stuff’ in this game I enjoy (alongside the hatred I have for snow covering the colors of blocks) I’d probably quit playing Boundless.
Visual clutter is not challenging. Its pure annoyance. Stop with the white-knighting the horrible decision Wonderstruck has made with this design decision.
somehow none of the visuals in game look anything close to what you describe as ugly, annoying etc. to me - are we playing different games?
so, I’m not defending some supposedly horrible decisions of the dev team (what a strongly subjective perception there! even though I don’t agree with what you say, at least I don’t say anything like “wonderful dev team decisions”, which would probably warrant your suggestion I am dev’s white knight; on the other hand you use very strong negative description of what you meet in game and label it as terrible decision making on devs side)
I simply present a moderate position that points to possible reasons behind the way game serves weather effects and such - these reasons being a certain concept that the game is based on and need to challenge players in ways different than PvP can (and since PvP is not a part of Boundless then survival, including weather effects, is needed).
All that said, I do not oppose option to switch off snow cover (already in game, even though in an imperfect way), I oppose idea of turning off all weather/atmosphere effects.
Can we just get, like, really big heat lamps to melt the snow? Or have fires melt it in a radius and add massive bonfires? I think the snow is hideous, but I think it’s important to the game, and I think a thawed haven in a snowy region would be awesome.
