Why I went inactive in-game

Can you provide citation for that?

I kinda can’t believe the tinting station idea hasn’t been added to the game yet. Mass crafts to stretch the life of the paint, and saving hours of work… seems like a no brainer that everyone should be supporting. I’ve seen people mention it in posts like it already exists, that’s how fundamental of a function it should be.

Honestly, I’m at a loss as to what would be a good solution at the moment.

I just know that I personally don’t relish the thought of having to rely on yet more processing steps after the initial collecting of materials and crafting them into the desired block - especially for blocks that already require multiple steps and hours of processing.

Provide a citation for an arbitrarily manufactured system where people invented crude psychology categories? No. Because they don’t get to define us and how we play with their limited little study from decades ago playing MUDs. Because their categories are woefully crude. Because there is so much more nuance and variation and those categories are just being used to play “us vs them” games and denigrate other people. That’s why I choose to reject those definitions. Because I’ve played MMOs for 20 years and observation no one fits easily into any of those boxes or have ever done so. We’re all much bigger than those limited definitions of humanity.

We have no killers in this game by that definition because we can’t PvP yet we’ve seen people grief others with regen bombs (recent post right here on the forums). Those are sick categories that fit a much more classist world view.

Do you honestly see people that simplistically? I do not.

Okay, so we’re talking about different words then, since you are refusing to use the word as defined in the discussion. When you said “Killers refers to combat not just pvp.”, it implied you meant “Thr Bartle definition of Killers refers to combat not just pvp”, which is not true. You chose to ignore the intended language and confuse the subject.

Since you added a paragraph while I typed…

No, it is a tool of generalization. It is useful for generalizing populations and intended audiences. Everyone and everything is a spectrum of beliefs and feelings.

If you take a look at the site I linked describing the types, it says many times, especially in the context of “killer” that these are generalizations and very, very few people fit into any one perfectly.

I read an interview or quote from Sean Murray (head of Hello Games / No Man’s Sky) recently. I can’t find the article now, but it said something to the effect that players are great at feedback with what they like and don’t. We’re great at identifying problems, but horrible at coming up with workable solutions. Basically our job is to relay feedback to developers with what works and what breaks. And then it’s up to the developers to process that feedback in accordance with their game vision to smooth out those issues.

We can come up with ideas to throw at the development team, but it’s their job, not ours to sort out the feedback. I think that’s why this thread has somewhat devolved into bickering because none of us have the power to implement or influence a decision but we’re arguing as if we do. At this point it’s probably up to James and his team to decide if the problem is relevant and what, if anything, to do about it. I mean we’ve identified that some people feel there is a problem, but I feel you hit the nail on the head. We can’t make a solution to it.

Actually most of our threads here are victim to that same result. Most people don’t understand the problem nor challenges enough to provide a viable solution. They should take time to try to understand more before just throwing out ideas or getting mad when their idea isn’t implemented. I’ve seen this a lot but I’m one of the lucky few who can talk directly to them.

We can influence them though. This has happened and with enough time trying to understand things give valuable data they can use in their decisions.

I admit, I did use many hundreds of black gleam to make a Tardis as a trophy to show off the thousands of gleambow meteors I’ve worked for and completed.

Did you actually read the entire wiki article and how the test for that categorization is no longer available because it was so flawed. How Bartle later tried to further subdivide those categories to make them actually usable but failed. How later that entire system was essentially discredited and superseded by a more accurate and thoughtful system?

From the article:

Bartle’s divisions provide a foundation for investigating gamer psychology; however, subsequent studies have noted certain limitations. For example, Nick Yee has argued that a “component” framework provides more explanatory power than a “category” framework.[42] Bartle’s motivation factors were analysed for correlation by factorial analysis based on a sample of 7,000 MMO players. One of the results was that the Bartle’s Explorer type didn’t appear and more importantly its subfactors “exploring the world” and “analysing the game mechanics” didn’t correlate.[43] Jon Radoff has proposed a new four-quadrant model of player motivations (immersion, cooperation, achievement, and competition) that has a goal of combining simplicity along with the major motivational elements that apply to all games (multiplayer or otherwise).

Yes, it’s my bad for changing the definition, but it was for definitions to an antiquated obsoleted system that should never have been introduced in the first place. It’s introduction was solely for the purpose of labeling people to generate more argument and division using an “us vs them” mentality, which ironically enough came across as the very thing they were criticizing.

Dunno about that, I feel like we have lots of solutions on the forums in general and here too.

New rarity and leaderboards seems like a winner to replace color rarity.

It could be simple, easy to code stuff. Like a golden wood block for every 100k wood farmed that you could show off. Or a golden spitter on a pedestal like major made. Leaderboards would be more fun but presumably more work to make.

We already have leaderboards in some form such as the prestige system and viceroy of a planet. However, I feel we need an expansion on this in other forms. Most mobs killed, Most coin collected, Most blocks mined/harvested, etc…

Have these leaderboards rotate on a monthly basis, resetting on the dawn of the month. The top … 25 or 50 or however many persons on a leaderboard the previous month get to hold a special title that can be displayed alongside their name in game. Next month rolls around, the next top 25 or 50 or however many persons get the title, and the previous rounds’ titles are revoked, unless that player managed to remain in the top. Gives it a bit of adrenaline pumping competition to the whole system as well.

Player with the most mobs killed on a planet gets the secretary of defense title :joy:

This gave me an idea, again not related but related to the rare item convo. These are the types of items that should be rare. Only farmable on umbris planets from the hardest to consistently kill enemy. Add feathers from blink and rift roadrunners. Collecting 3 lets you craft a trophy. These items can be sellable so they can be farmed for profit.

I do like that idea. Collecting the Umbris, rift, and blink type creature trophy’s from the actually mob.

Thank you for your post :+1: @GreenRoc . It doesn’t look like there have been any more replies to the OP, so this has run it’s course.
