World Update Frequency

Mine do this as well. I always had lag spikes when changing colors on a sov, but now it happens just because I looked at the world control.

@jon-eric
I mined a bit on the exoplanet Jaroth.

It definitely has a small delay before the new block appears.

It is a bit more prominent on Sand and Gravel blocks. They sometimes appears 1 second late and they do sometimes reappear after i destroy them. i don’t if these type of block are heavier on the data side than the basic rocks and we don’t get that info quickly enough from the chunkAPI.

Latency of any kind is a nonstarter for most players that would even bother trying out the game and for those who have been here for the duration, it makes the game almost unplayable. I get the need to reduce costs based on compute/etc but if the blocks are taking a full second to reappear with any consistency, that’s a nonstarter.

One of the things I learned many years ago from Blizzard (RIP lol) is that the most critical aspect of having a successful game is absolutely nailing the responsiveness/engagement of the game. No matter what you’re doing - snappy, responsive, crisp input/output is something Blizzard absolutely nailed and dominated many years ago with games like World of Warcraft, Warcraft, and Starcraft and it was a huge reason their games were so successful.

Latency is definitely more prominent since the update. I have even seen a few instances where your toon will drift a little or even continue to move past where you stop. (not on ice lol)

I’m not convinced that latency is actually the root cause of the problem for blocks. I think there might be a bug in the asynchronous logic that is letting newBlockState be overwritten by oldBlockState. It could also be a bug in the block death logic on the client side that is getting corrected on the server side, or the algorithm for calculating block death might just be too slow. Latency seems to make the problem more obvious, but I’m not sure it is the cause.

Jon is working on the latency.

I’ve been thinking the same thing, that the issue with blocks doesn’t seem like it would be caused by latency alone.

I’ve started wondering if I could introduce a big latency in the development universe and learn something from the effect that has.

He made a clear post on the situation of the game. He was VERY CLEAR about their financial situation as well as what the team was doing and how hard they were having to find time to solve the bind they were in.

We got more information and context from James about the state of the game than Monument gave after purchase. So at least be equal in the criticism or just come to terms that owners are just going to sometimes be really BAD at how they communicate and give them a pass. That is what should have happened with James as well at some point not just Monument.

For me - they both did a bad job at “updating” communication but I’m not going to beat them up about it because I understand you just can’t please everyone and cr*p happens.

I never said it was silly and don’t think that is the word to use. People lash out when emotions get involved. People also lash out and don’t act FAIR about the situation and cherry pick situations because they can’t deal with things not going like THEY EXPECT. That’s something else besides putting yourself in the developers/owners situation and “holding them accountable” but being reasonable. A reasonable person can actually see both sides and will curtail their criticism instead of going over the top. Most people here in these forums have constantly gone over the top.

You, being IT, should get he had a HUGE technical debt issue and bad design issue to work through. He was doing a lot of the right things to fix it but the boat sank.

Calling me “silly” and “always defending James” is what massively frustrated me. I appreciate you apologizing. We all (even me) sometimes in the moment pick an incorrect word or over stress something that maybe we didn’t really mean that way. It’s text not voice/etc so that can happen. I certainly don’t think negative of you or many others here and would apologize as well if those feelings existed.

As far as I am concerned we just have different view on things and I’m not going to destroy an overall good realtionship with people here because of that. I’m just asking people to be a bit more aligned to things that happened and not demonize a guy when it add no value. We don’t need endless arguments for sure on it…

Of course you can have a different opinion but saying I’m doing something I’m not (like defending James) isn’t going to be tolerated by me. This isn’t a “ME” issue here its a boundary issue.

You haven’t attacked me but many very clearly have on this forum because I wasn’t going to be part of the MOB that hates James and the Devs and can’t come to emotional terms that the game was failing. I understood their plight and emphasized with them while still being able to hold them to task in a fair way that helped move the needle forward and solve problems. Because of MY ability to do that and interact with them many things were fixed and introduced into the game. We can have a community of just “complainers” or a community of people that hold the devs to an acceptable level of accountability while actually SOLVING PROBLEMS. I prefer the later and will always push against those that just only want to complain.

Correct he isn’t relevant, so why do so many keep complaining about what he DID WRONG and need to demonize him as “abandoning” the game when he just decided to sell it to someone else?

I only bring him up for CONTEXT of why things are the way they are with game systems or design decisions because that still IS relevant. If the new Devs are just going to take the IP and build a whole new game from scratch then it wouldn’t matter but, they aren’t doing that. They are trying to make the existing game better so it is massively important they understand context and even MORE important that they understand the headwinds the previous developers faced and why things ended up that way. How else are they going to remove the constraints the game faced? Without that information they likely will fail as well because of the issues in the game system, design decision, etc.

I don’t hate James. It’s more irritation than anything else. James made mistakes. That’s been well established and no need to go futher than that.

Because someone… :face_with_raised_eyebrow:  inevitably starts virtue signaling about him and bruising their knees in the process.

Let’s please stay on topic. @jon-eric is working through some latency issues still, so this will stay open until then.

Hi,

I tested a handful of different update approaches and rates this weekend. I saw the lowest latency when I used a 60 Hz update rate combined with new code that updates the world immediately when a network message arrives.

I’m planning to release that today. I appreciate all of your feedback to help get me pointed in the right direction!

I am curious whether I can get back to low tens on EU servers, after the latest changes spiked it close to 100.

Ok so it’s somewhere between - 45-55ms most of the time now

Sounds like before it was maybe using European latency and now it’s only able to achieve American latency.

yep, i get around this on USE server. Yesterday i was in the 80s

@jon-eric Didn’t change anything for the block reappearing thought, so it might not be the latency for this issue.

edit: let me test further a bit, it was happening at the beginning of my mining session. It seems to be “fine” now.

I keep getting booted out of the game not sure if anyone else is experiencing this? Currently just placing blocks, for example been booted out the game about 5 times in last 5 mins.

this is not happening for me.

I had that yesterday, my character would freeze then entire game would shut down.

Been Gleam ball mining with allot of regen bombing (standing under gleam), and not only is it better than before the update (less blocks appearing back in) I am getting less blocks (none so far), stuck around the edges of where I mine (whist constantly regenning looking up), and this was happening before you even made any adjustments.
