If Boundless was moved to the epic games store and given out as a epic games freebie would that help to increase the player count? I feel as if Boundless would retain more players if they made the early game actually bearable as well. Started a new character a while back to go in fresh with a friend and realized how garbage it is to start in this game. Ultimately they were just there for the advanced building mechanics and I just went on my late game save and unloaded my beacon and moved a basic storage to another planet and they have been messing around with the chisels/block colors.
You’re asking for Monumental to actually do work on this game other than keeping the lights on and maintenance. Not going to happen.
this game just need active advertisement using players streams and chatting with them to show them the game is more fun as you pass the basics ![]()
when i started i was close to uninstall untill i found i can get more plots and i can build at other planets, not only at that pile of mud it dropped me on
and later i found other colors ![]()
Things like free weekends give temporary bumps to the game it seems. Yeah giving it away for them to keep may give us some but right now we have been told that they are just trying to get the game to break even. It has been operating in the red and that was when we had a bit over 300 visible sovs. Now there are like 100. Many have let their Gleam club go as well. We were also told they were putting their resources into another game that is seeing some good growth. Then maybe if boundless can break even they will maybe consider investing into boundless. It is really sad as I think with the right promotion and a little development it could take back off again. The one thing that Monte stated was they were going to look at the new player experience. Yes it could use some work but fi one does the journal tasks you get the basics and the rest comes along with it. Many just don’t like the way it is presented. At this point all the things that Monte stated they were going to do when they took it over have been empty ones. He showed such optimism when he made his introduction then he went silent. we are now at almost 3 1/2 years with Monumental being silent. We had 2 years of Wonderstruck before that. 5 1/2 years with no movement. Only thing that has been great has been the addition of Jon-Eric as he has helped us fix issues and made possible some player created exos to happen. Monumental Boundless news! Here was the Take over thread for those that may have missed it. Be sure to scroll down and read Monte’s replies. The enthusiasm was there but he hasn’t been seen in the forums since March 2023 now.
hey its a good idea, what about some love for boundless? like free weekend for Valentines? along with playermade Valentine exo?
For the first time, I’m going to be critical, but I’m still waiting for “They are going to turbo charge its development and promotion.”
Without any concrete news from Monumental, it’s hard to imagine that putting Boundless on the Epic Games Store will make a difference.
What we need is communication.
After the release of Hytale and the announcement of Reforj, maybe it’s time to turbo charge and promote it. A new crowdfunding campaign could be an idea worth considering.
In any case, without a development team, I don’t see how any of this can happen.
For the last several years, Monumental has bought up a bunch of random games that they consider to have “good bones” as @monty1 once said. A good chunk of these games are mobile, casual, simplistic games. For those same several years, they have done absolutely nothing with any of them other than keep the lights on or, in the case of Crowfall, completely shutting it down with zero news of anything to come.
The plan, again, according to Monty himself, was to buy up a bunch of games with “good bones” and inject life into them through new development and some marketing firepower yet here we are, several years later, and they have done absolutely nothing. Perhaps its time to consider that Monumental’s original idea/mission is no longer valid and they have pivoted to something else?
I sadly don’t believe a promotion will do much of anything, if the early game isn’t made a little more enticing and/or easier to get into the depths of.
I’ve seen so many newbie huts spawn and decay over the years, just surrounding the island I’ve been building on for 4+ years now, sadly never with any traces of the players sticking around. ![]()
There are SO many options now on the market that do what Boundless provides through exploration, building, crafting, and community. The window for Boundless to take off has all but closed and the game will continue to be what it is - about 30 concurrent players with total player counts spiking to higher two digits. At this point, Boundless would need MASSIVE improvements to compete with games like Pax Dei, Enshrouded, Hytale, modded Minecraft, and many, many others.
Correction there are so many options on PC, on Console Boundless is still dominant on all those subjects but not for long some of those games PlayStation announced we’ll be getting in 5-10 years from EA
Enshrouded is on PS5 as are Trove, No Man’s Sky, and ARK. It really depends on what you want out of a game.
For me, it’s always been about communication, the updates would be nice, but not something I personally wanted or needed. I will say though after putting alot of hours into Hytale, it sure is nice to see millions of players playing it and the game getting regular updates and also getting all their social media accounts posted to daily.
I love Boundless, I just with Monumental loved it as much as I do.
On that same page just check a little lower. It sold milllions and its also concurrent players much like Boundless. 1.4 mil last month concurrently, granted I question this site as its just based on trends not any official data. Either way compared to <100 players, Im ok with it.
Heck lets even add to this:
All that and its still in EA.
Oh man not Trove
I genuinely used to play that game so much and swapped between boundless and trove when I was younger.
It’s still minecraft to me lol! Already knew about the funding. Early backers funded Boundless as well. When you think that is was Oortian online before Boudless.
Regardless of what Hytale is or isn’t to you, its popular. I was also a little bit of a troll on the Hytale Discord mainly due to the same as your comment. It’s just Minecraft and for the most part in it’s current state it is.
Hytale has a good community, large player base, over 4200 mods and growing serveral hundred mods daily, the modding is amazing and only gets better, they hire people straight out of the community and pay for mods to incorporate those into the main game, I can go on all day.
You won’t recognize Hytale in the months to come.
I think the whole point is… Boundless has no updates and a tiny playerbase. The game is great and the community for Boundless is too and I have fought tooth and nail for it as best as I could.
The OP was looking at ways to get more people into the playerbase you have to start with having an owner that cares about the game and the community and puts forth an effort to make the game better. Be it advertising, social media, game updates, communication, and a whole slew of other things.
Rye’s video highlighting dead games showcased Boundless and brought quite a few players in to my suprise and Im unsure of the exact number we have retained from that.
I know in tracking player numbers on my site the overall count hasn’t grown. Looking at the current players of 12 online, 160 planets, 7 worlds with players and a peak of 32 players in the past 24 hours, a high point of 60 players on Dec 28, and a high point of 63 players for the year.
The numbers don’t lie, there is a problem with player retention, and I think without regular updates, Rye’s video of highlighting a dead game, may be pretty spot on, as much as that pains me to type.
Advertise, update, post on social media and hope Monumental cares more about the game and maybe, something will happen.
Great game, but when the community cares more about a game than the owners, there is a problem.
A couple new players, What I have seen is old players returning, but whatever. Yeah we know about paying players to make mods and such. But it is still never going to be anything other than Minecraft to those that never liked Minecraft in the first place.
Appreciate you acknowledging Hytale, but not the laundry list of things I mentioned in reference to the OP.
No one has to like Hytale and comparing it to Minecraft is fair, I still do it. You don’t have to play it, but it gets updates, has many players, has advertising, has owners that care, constant development, actual funding currently, hype…and to your point, Hytale can be whatever you want it to be, its a foundation that they or anyone can build on. People have already made it into a Vampire Survivors overhead game, a side scroller like Castlevania, and so many other things and totally why I’m into it. I can make my own game in Hytale with their tools and hey it wont even look like Minecraft ![]()
Side Scroll Fight - Hytale Mod
This Mod Proves Hytale Can Be ANYTHING
You don’t see any of that with Boundless and that is what makes a successful game and my whole point.
Knew about those too the side scroller was out before it even launched lol!
But I won’t promote it here.
Awesome as I shared those videos before, do you know about all the other stuff I mentioned about Boundless? It would be better to discuss that, than Hytale.
I haven’t ever enjoyed how @Dhusk has put Boundless down, but that doesn’t mean he was wrong. Simply put, I love Boundless I still log in and do things as I still have a soft place in my heart for it, but there’s that little guy on my shoulder all the time whispering, where are those deep pockets, the promised updates, and how come it takes and arm and a leg to get any sort of communication?
Happy to disucss it on Discord in voice or other wise, my script spam the forums enough.
