I personally don’t support micro-transactions of that type in boundless. I for one don’t like the advancement towards goals faster by placing cash towards it. While I can’t say that I haven’t been part of the freemium model and haven’t spent a couple bucks on it, indeed I have, and I think I got my money’s worth out of it. I don’t think a paid game like Boundless, that can support an influx of constant cash by renting servers, needs and depends on micro-transactions, specially those that give you an inherent benefit when compared to not paying players.
Especially since introducing means to get coins, tools, plots, etc, via cash, sounds like a bad idea that will affect player created economy in the long run, so called “whales” will flood the market and the imminent devaluation of coin will happen, meaning you can buy less with the same amount of coin.
I can’t deny that having a different backing tier helps, just upgrading recently to pioneer has helped me plot larger areas, without having to personally grind for those plots, if I didn’t have that perk. But I consider that an exceptional case, and those are just that, backer tiers. Once the game comes out, those backer tiers will disappear and most players will be starting on the same playing field. Plus out of the perks, most are out of game rewards and the once that are in-game, are planned to be rewarding, yet no game breaking.
If we consider the future trading of plots, then it means not backer tier players, can get to insane amount of plots, just as any backer.
If any means of getting an income other than sales and renting servers should come to Boundless, I think that micro-transactions that are purely cosmetic could make an appearance, and when I mean cosmetic, I mean for player customization, as any type of added customization for blocks and buildings, will cause too much uproar.
Just look at different colored gleam, lava and water. Some people already feel left out, cuz they didn’t get their chance at getting them, if it weren’t for many members sharing it with the rest, selling it, etc. They wouldn’t have a chance to even getting them.
