[Closed] Universal capital city discussion

The best thing to do right now is wait for Havok, in the meantime we can just brainstorm some ideas that we can incorporate. We don’t really have a goal right now, so it’s okay to go nowhere until we receive further orders

Hey everybody, sorry it’s been a busy morning, but I’m finally free for a bit again!

So, I see many of you have already visited the new world! I hope you like what you’ve seen so far, though we are going to be making a few alterations now that we can finally see it rendered in game. I’ve yet to look at it in person (Stuck at “Meshing chunks…”) though we will be starting construction soon. We will be re-generating the world, moving some things around and swapping some colors for a bit, so it may be awhile before we are ready to get down to business.

OK Havok, since were getting started on construction, what should we start planning out first.

um…

Okay so this is what I’ve brainstormed so far, and I may repeat some past ideas so be wary.
Districts + Descriptions:

  1. Agricultural District - Where large farms will grow crops and raise livestock to supply citizens with food that gets stored in large warehouses in the same district
  2. Mining District - Dirty place the supplies stone, gleam and many other resources to our amazing builders!
  3. Entertainment District - A district where the weary traveler can rest at an Inn, or drink some rum at a bar while eating a quality meal. Many attractions could lie here such as a nice monument, as well as a theme park featuring roller coasters and dangerous slides!
  4. Trade District - The home of the money flow! Vast open air markets where players can trade their wares on a set plot of land whether it be food, jewelry, or weaponry!
  5. Housing District - A place for Oortians to call home, through purchasing a plot of land they can either construct their house, or purchase a pre-built home.
  6. Cultural District - Featuring a luxurious auction house that only the most legendary lore filled items will be sold (probably best for Trade District now that I think about it), as well as a museum where Oort Lore will be on display for the everyday Oortian.
  7. Guild District - Home to guilds of all types, might I say one of the best places to find work

Miscellaneous Ideas:

  1. Arena
  2. Library (best built in the culture district imo)
  3. Escape tunnels (just in case of an attack and those rendered defenseless can evacuate)
  4. Lamp posts
  5. Race Track where Oortians can gamble on the fastest mountable creature (if one will ever exist)
  6. Hedge maze
  7. Large garden/forest

No no, I can read Havok. I just think it’s better to plan things out even if we’re not going to start building. Even if it’s something as little as what should the districts be, it’s good to get a head start on some new ideas for districts.
And my apologies, when you said business I thought you meant starting construction.

I think that after we have the world regenerated and we have all the tweeks we want and need, we’ll need to start by cutting down some of these trees and clearing all of the leaves. The forest is pretty dense, so that could take a while, unless a lot of people pitch in.

for now, brainstorm builds for the following districts:
1 Agriculture- farms, barns, windmills, granary, orchard, etc
2 Mining- quarry, refinery, surveying
3 entertainment- Arena, clubs, taverns, art, pools, etc.
4 trade- shops, stalls, malls, food service, banking, block shops.
5 diplomatic- guild halls, embassies, senate building, local govt.
6 industrial- refinement, crafting, factories, blacksmiths, lumber mills, etc
7 residential- housing, community centers, free-build home plots
8 natural/park- large trees, plants collected from across the universe, green houses.

I also said it may be awhile

Wow, you have a lot more than I thought you would. But I don’t think we need a district for almost everything there is in the game. I always saw the districts as more of a 4 to 5 main districts, into subdistrict in each district.

Why would we not want everything in the game in our city? and if we got with the spoke design, we’re looking at a potential 8 districts + a central district.

Well in my eyes,I see a district is being a small city, so if we have more than five districts or so that’s just more time that we spend on unnecessary building. But that’s just my opinion.

I took some measurements from spawn to the edge of the desert and from spawn to the base of the mountain.
Spawn>desert ~110m
Spawn>mountain~250m.

Assuming we center the city roughly between spawn and the mountain, and build our perimeter wall right at the edge of the desert, we’re looking at a rough 360m diameter city. In my opinion, that’s not large enough. I was hoping for something with a diameter of around 500m. IF the plan is to plot the exact center of the city, then go out about 250m in every direction and build the outer perimeter wall. That should indicate to us what area to start clearing trees in and for how far out.

Nah, that was never the plan. We’re grouping builds of similar roles into distinct districts that reflect their roles. That way, if you need anything, you know where to find it.

Didn’t @nevir have that idea, I really like it. And can you say how many blocks equal a meter or how many meters equal one block I want to know the block to meter ratio.

1block=1meter

Then yeah, I think actually over 500 blocks would be best.

Had a quick little wonder in the world… Very nice. Few comments:

  • Weather seems a little moody but I think my computer was playing up a little too and possibly just not rendering the sky properly.
  • Biomes are massive, I was stuck in a forest for about 800 blocks on my “home spawn”. This could be good or bad, I can’t decide.
  • Spawn point is going to be a massive job to clean out for a city, I think it might be best to try and fiddle around with biome generation until we get a good spawn point (middle of desert?)

Cool concept that was probably already mentioned but I’m going to go in depth with it. Banking. I’d love to see a guild out there that could hold a banking house in the trade district of the capital. They could hold money for people, and loan money to others. This would need a ton of trust and some force when collecting money for loans. Perhaps a loan could be something for Oortian to be able to start up their own shop in the trade district, or maybe buy a plot of land in a housing district. This wasn’t very in depth into the concept but I just wanted to see what everybody thinks and if people would cooperate with a banking system pretty much based on trust alone. So what do you think? Also, what do you think we could do to make it work.
Edit: wait a second, might this not be the appropriate topic to post this in? I just assumed so because we could have banks in the trade district but now I’m second guessing myself
