Some f2p option would be good. I find the biggest issue is this games price. Minecraft is half the price or less as its often on sale. Its got infinite mod support, public and private servers and solo play. Not to mention its got more simple recipes and smoother progression.
On top of this the game has mmo systems via skill tree like system and limited skill points.
Likewise i feel the early game along with its tutorial is over complicated meaning even if the game was free its unlikely many will stay.
A free version could be good if early game is tweaked to be a little faster. Ie progression to stone tools, building a camp, and getting basic things like torches to see. Likewise a lot of mechanics could be explained better and in more simple ways than boxes with lots of text.
As for a model of free 2 play, creativerse is similar and went from buy 2 play to free 2 play model and doing decently well. They make all their money om cosmetic block packs and such to add to peoples building capabilities and more creative freedom. Im sure theres other stuff you can buy as well. Plus theres a creative mode.
This game could do similar things, making game free and adding special blocks and such you can buy with cubits. They already got the rental planet thing in the works. They could also sell QOL stuff like path of exile does with its various stash tabs you can buy. Like maybe you can buy a backpack that holds and inventory worth of items in it (inventory size smart stack) in a single slot. They could go hard on cosmetics like actual clothing and such. They could add cosmetic effects that overlay any tool you equip to look a certain way. So maybe all totems have x look, all hammers have x look, and so on. Theres Boundless possibilities.
Free to play really is the best way to get your game in the hands of as many as possible and therefore have access to monetize in some way the most amount of people.
But if someone doesn’t own minecraft theres really no reason for them to buy this over minecraft. This game has features base minecraft doesn’t, but there are mods that can do most of the things this game does different.
Time limited demos are problematic because it takes a long time to progress to end game crafting, etc.
Perhaps a demo that gives you an end game character and shows you high level crafting, and meteors, etc would show prospective players what they will be able to do eventually.
Leave game as it is. Price for game is fair. I’ve definitely got my monies worth for what I have paid and guessing everyone else has that uses the forums. I don’t agree with free to play concepts. The player base will grow even more as the game grows more. I don’t agree with the ability to purchase currency with real life money even if it’s a different type of currency then coins. Also if we do get new character models I feel each should have it’s own special trait ability, so I could agree a one time character change but no more then that because it would be kinda odd being able to change your special trait. Please chance the coffers to a different kind of image so it doesnt look like loot boxes. Now I’m just rambling. One more thing, I’m open Bob’s Mall on Tana! JK @DKPuncherello
In the last 2 years the game has lost 2/3rds of its avg players according to steam. Those average numbers are barely higher than 6 years ago. Its possible more players are on console but when i see in game, it doesn’t seem that this game has a large player base at all. By data alone the game is not really growing at all.
Creativerse, a similar game has 4 to 7 times more average players and thats mainly thanks to going f2p. This is true of any game that goes free 2 play and is often what saves games from dying.
F2p is a stigmatized title, but data doesn’t lie, It works.
I keep seeing this game being compared to Minecraft.
That’s like comparing apples to square pixelated apples. My opinion like, and I LOVE Minecraft.
This game is (my opinion too, don’t hate) soooooo much better! Seriously, I can’t name a game in all my many eons of gaming that has the community and support that this game has! People can get confused over how certain mechanics work (I did at first), but anyone can ask any question they like either here or in game and get a straight and sensible answer.
I don’t care if there’s FTP of not, I am happy with Boundless the way that it is. Obviously if they decide to give us more, that’s great!
Devs, you’re doing fantastic! Keep doing what you’re doing!
Are you looking at the peak of 1000 users? Because that’s from a free to play weekend.
Not saying boundless doesn’t need advertising. Basically the thought of everyone on the forums at this point is they don’t want to spend their ad budget before it’s “done” and boundless is currently in what I would call “open beta”
Boundless has never had average of 400 players. In fact the average players have been quite consistent except for the free weekend and something in February the following year. In fact, the peak players is almost identical to this time last year.
Besides all that, none of this takes into account PS4 players.
This game is great but the only feature it has that isnt in typical modded minecraft is the traveling to other planets. Argueably though minecraft has infinite worlds to travel through via mods like Mystcraft. Settlents Minecraft has with Towny and other similar mods. Theres a plethora of mods for shops, graphics, texture packs, adding mmo systems via MCMMO or what ever better mod variant is out now and way more potential content and progression. Feed The Beast average pack has over 100 or 200 mods depending on pack to create entire minecraft experiences based on themes.
There is nothing boundless has that can not be replicated in Minecraft with greater success except the way their blocks work. Boundless’ advantage is that not everything is based on blocks. Its more like combined triangles and quadrant based chiseling. This allows better creative freedom as minecraft struggles with slants although there are mods that add such blocks.
I think a combination of things is what makes this game feel better. I love many things about this game. Its really hard to convince someone to play this though over minecraft cause of mods, and rarely do people play vanilla minecraft. Not to mention its 20$ with no subscription models like gleam club.
Also keep in mind that this game is (since official release) only 2 years old. Where was Minecraft in terms of features after only 2 years? Give it a few years and this game will catch up in features. I’d say when that happens it WILL be better than Minecraft in every way. I play boundless even with the lack of content because I know that content will come in the future and it’s worth waiting for
Lets hope. Theres so many games that are in this boat that you have to hope they stick around long enough to rise from the ashes to the top. If this game surpassed minecraft it would be trendimg for at least a decade. Even today minecraft is one of the most played, streamed, recorded, and bought games to date even though its been around for so long.
Boundless will never be better than Minecraft in every way. We’ve had it repeatedly confirmed that not only are they not doing anything as complex as redstone, but that it would be somewhere between impractical and impossible to do so.
Boundless is good, and has a lot of potential, but lets not overstate things.
I mean. Just because there are technical limitations now that forces them to put a redstone type system on the back burner, doesn’t mean they won’t be able to figure it out 4 years down the road from now. I know they’ve said it’s impractical because of server lag but I feel like it is possible for them to figure something out that would work in the future. I could be wrong obviously but I feel like they won’t just 100% scrap the idea of moving parts and technology for this game
Well I paid 60 dollars for boundless being in Oz. I don’t believe at all it should be free…seriously that’s not expensive. I can sacrifice my daily coffee shop run for a month and I paid for a game. I have played for over a year, since release on ps4. Movie ticket is 14 dollars. Last a hour thirty minutes… do the maths on that. This game is so cheap. I remember a post where developers said they have sold quite a large amount of this game. So is it a question of how to get new players or why are so many not sticking to this game. Why have so many left. The game doesn’t need to be free. These only my views not a argument or directed in anyway …
