I get rubber banding when my communication with the game servers exceeds 150ms. This is because -everything- has to be processed server side. Things like the direction I’m looking should and would be better off handled purely client-side tbh.
Yeah. I understand the devs apparent insistence that this is all client side, but it is more than a little odd that I don’t experience this problem with any other game, and that the problem is widespread.
Do you play any other similar/large games that compare to Boundless? ie NMS
Just as a note, I came out of a portal to Refgar yesterday, hit a bit of a lagspike, got STUCK in a constant rubber-banding loop that never stopped even after my connection went back to not “Unplayable connection”.
I cannot say they do, but I’ve played NMS and never once experienced rubber banding from bad connection. That’s because movement is handled on the client rather than being forced to be handled server-side.
Hell, I’ve raided for a few years on low-end DSL in World of Warcraft, never once felt rubber banding on my side. I did however, see others teleporting around when sessions of bad connectivity would happen, but never once lost control of my avatar because the game server was trying to control/calculate my movement.
This game is the ONLY GAME I have played where I’ve experienced loss of control of my character because of an unstable connection.
Will do next time I’m on, bookmarking for now to come back to this with more details.
Continuing the discussion from What turns you off playing Boundless?:
Dear Devs… I want to like Boundless so much, but there are several things that make it hard for me to get back into it. I’ll share my experience after I share the things I think are missing in order of importance:
1. Not enough players - please look into going f2p, partnering with Epic as a weekly free game, and/or becoming a playstation+ free game. If you don’t think the games ready for it yet, that’s cool, but you’re not in “early access” according to steam. I’m guessing there’s more money to be made from active players than from game sales alone. I would suggest gamepass, but I think you’re too similar to “you know what” for microsoft.
2. Full Render Distance - Building is the biggest strength of the game, but even at max settings everything looks crappy when it shifts to its partial rendering state from not too far away. The full render distance needs to be changed for the game to shine as a creative tool. I know it’s not possible on every platform or with any PC, but at least allow more powerful PCs to render what it can handle.
3. Creature diversity - There’s like 5 creatures in the whole game… and there’s no use for them outside of killing them. This hasn’t changed since launch and adding more mobs would add so much content to the game. I hope something like harvest age is coming but for animals rather than crops. New hostile mobs would be ok too, but really I’d like some non-combat things to do with mobs.
4. Slow start. When the game came out, I thought it would be an awesome way for me and my kids to play an mmo type game together, but they got bored quick. Adding creature diversity would help, but I think some tweaks could be made to things like block placement speed or to the leveling curve to make it more fun for a new player. Also, perhaps there could be a way to make portals within the same planet easier and cheaper to set up. I’d especially like to build anywhere I want on my home planet but make it relatively easy to have a portal to the planet capital so I can access the larger community. Perhaps allow a capital to build a special type of “home portal” that takes you home, and you can likewise build a portal only in your home which takes you to the home portal of that planet’s capital. Also allow “home portals” to use spark instead of oort (this should be restricted to T1 or T2 planets). I’m sure there’s other (maybe better) ways to allow players to access the larger community, but that’s my suggestion.
5. UI - I wish there were more shortcuts or easy ways to navigate menus… the inventory stuff is ok, but accessing the store, locations, or even your character build takes a while to figure out, plus many features aren’t even that easy to use once you find them. I’d suggest more radial menus/features for controller and more default hotkeys for keyboards that make finding all features easier. I usually play on PC but with controller, every time a restart I have a hard time finding all the menus and just end up pushing buttons until I get lucky.
6. Milestone tutorials - The initial tutorials are fine but once you get into using different machines or want to make portals the tutorials are lacking and the learning curve is steep… Please add a little tutorial for each machine, and if you make a “Home portal” like I mentioned up above that uses spark, it would be a great way to make a portal tutorial before people have to worry about going off planet and asteroid hunting… which is hard as a new player who doesn’t know what he’s doing or how to connect to the community. Alternatively, the UI tweaks could fix this just by being more intuitive about providing information when it’s needed.
7. Death penalty - just please make it decay over time even when offline… it’s no fun to explore if I’m worried about hours and hours of grinding exp to get myself out of an experience hole.
8. New players finding their friends - there’s a way for a new player to start near one of their friends, but I haven’t found an easy way for new players to find friends outside of that original opportunity. I know there’s possibility for exploiting this… but I suggest you just let people on T1 or T2 planets teleport to their friends on other T1/T2 planets for a small fee (and let either player pay that fee). The QoL improvement, particularly for new players, outweighs any balance or exploit potential so long it’s T1/T2 planets only. If I get my kids to try it again, we’ll probably spend at least one session just trying to get them to the new home, and the chances of a 2nd session after what I know will be a frustrating experience become low.
About me as a player - I started on launch day for PS4… I was super excited. I started on Arie and had some friendly neighbors, was having fun, and saw tons of potential in the game. I played for 2 weeks or so at launch, maybe more. My home was between 5th and 8th largest on the planet and I had big dreams for expanding. My initial home was named Riverton, and it was actually really close to the current capital on Arie, Rivertowns (no I don’t think the name similarities are a coincidence). I bought copies of the game for me and my kids (I have 2 ps4s and a PC), but after I couldn’t get them into the game I stopped playing after a while. Eventually, my home expired, and every time I’ve tried to play since then it was just kinda sad because I lost everything from my original home; even the plots are claimed, plus, there’s never anyone around for me to play with.
In attempts since then I’ve played for a bit and run into people who are friendly or helpful for a short while, but because of what I lost and the lack of new player connections it’s just sad and lonely every time I start over. I’m thinking of giving it a shot again after joining the discord so I can actually do things with others, but I don’t know if it will stick because of all the things up above.
Just a helpful thing for you… You no longer lose everything when a beacon expires. Put down a new beacon and use reclaim. Everything should be there. Also, it can be hard finding a good place to live, I understand that myself. We joined a good guild and have built near them. We have found a good place with a lot of land around us to expand. (EZPZ has a city with plots in it and like I said, we found space outside that suits my family - Timber Arches portal at the guild hub.)
I’ve experienced rubber banding in many games on PC and PS4 both, but that’s just me maybe
I am going to quit playing so I want to comment on what I like and do not like. I hesitate to broach some of these observations and frustrations because I do not have a solution for all of them but here goes
It seems there are more mall shops than actual players.
There are more empty shop stands than shop stands containing inventory
Colossal cities are virtually empty of players
Huge Malls are virtually empty of shoppers
Planets can often have fewer than 5 players on them total.
Enormous builds with virtually no furniture to put inside them
5 creature types in pathetically low
Hunting is boring due to the limited enemies
Same creature types on every single planet
no water life after two years is inexplicable. Minecraft has 20 or more tropical fish alone.
Weapons types are limited
no armor, just a diaper
limited customization
2 years and no ladders
No NPCs
Things I like
Mining is good and works ok
The game is visually superb
Players are mostly nice
Minus furniture, the building works well and the chiseling options are good.
Exploration is good
controls work well
leveling is fair
skill pages work ok
Well, the correct answer from me is:
Nothing.
However one thing that makes me reach for the whisky rather quickly is that … I still don’t really know quite what I’m doing … knowledge is hard to come by … and whilst I appear to be levelling up, stuff … I feel like I’m kind of in the stone ages.
Also, I don’t really know what I should do with regards to progressing my character. Since I really want to build, and craft at home … but I know that to do that I need to hunt and mine (and - ugh - chop bloody trees - the least fun thing ever ) … So that has made me vaguely aware of the concept of “Skill Pages” or second characters … but there’s no real description in game as to what any of that means or how it affects your current character.
Like, if I get another skill page, will I effectively be level 1 on that page? Or will I be the current level, but with no points there. Are all my points then to be spread out over both skill pages? In which case, what’s the point? etc.
I’m not asking for answers to those things here … I’m just demonstrating that this kind of thing makes me really apprehensive about engaging with … well … anything, really. Any time I think … OH I COULD DO THAT … I just think … yeah … but maybe if I just plant some flowers for now, because that will break my tiny mind. hehehe. Again, not asking for answers, just describing my mindset here.
Loving my time so far, and will continue to do so.
MMM
The lack of options for fists. I really do enjoy using the fists, but I am at the point where I will have to put them away soon. I may have more to learn about them, though.
https://www.ccleaner.com/speccy
Grab a copy of speccy. It’s great for showing computer stats and may be able to show a more accurate ready.
I’ve used it for years.
I wish the rapid fire feat worked with fists…
I agree. That does sound a bit high for an I7. I’m running an old Pentium E5700 (was brand new when I bought it 10 years ago ).
I usually run at 38-45% cpu load with Boundless.
I blame the liquor…
1.people trying to give me orders after hunts and i put a portal up to go to my beacon with my guild y and them shutting my portal off so have to put another one up.
2.walls being built around the town i live in by one person.
3.that i cant play on os4 and PC with same characters.(this one is not that big i understand limitation)
4.not being able to see the differences in prices for each color not just he item type i have to run to other stores to see if its the same color i want to sell or is theirs is a rare world color or just a everyday world so i know to put lower price if mine is not a rare color or higher .
- If you need to portal to your beacon, move some distance away from the main group so that it’s not an issue. Some people get upset if you try to open a portal right in the middle of the group.
- This is usually one of two instances. Either it’s the town leader or another member that has approval to build the wall. If this bothers you, mention it. Or it’s someone else who is doing it to bother the people in the town. If the wall goes all the way around and has no exits, then this is intentional and needs to be reported.
- I see this issue a lot.
- If you’re looking for a specific item in a specific color, post it to the forums. People will answer and let you know where it can be found, or if it’s someone like me, if I have it, I’ll either give or trade it to you.
People do that when you’re too close to the group. I dont have a problem with you opening a portal after a hunt but I can’t control other people. Try moving away from the group first…
Portal during hunts - not cool
Portal after hunts - why not
