Testing 194: Epic Skills, Skill Sets and the Exchange!

Inventory is fully unlocked at lv 1 on testing.
No skill anymore. Glass and basic doors are also not skills anymore same goes for a lot of blocks and the basic chisels.

Maybe you should just play on the testing server and try it out instead of debating on it on a theoretical level. That might clear up a lot of your concerns.

I can understand frustration, but this does not need to be a personal thing, especially on a forum where we all strive to work together. Don’t feed the flames, man

No.
All of these things spell no fun for me.
I also think you should speak for yourself, not all of us.
we don’t all want this.

personally I think that a more specialised playstyle is better , as you end up with more speciality stores rather then general stores

I also think that more specialised characters makes the game more interesting as, when you meet a new player they will have different skills then you, which makes it valuable to learn the skills of other players.

It says it right here what the Devs want with specialisation, for the most part.

I’m giving my opinions regarding what’s best for everyone, which translates to longevity and a good effort:reward ratio. It’s not a single player game. Just because, for example, trolling people is fun for some players, doesn’t mean it’s good for most games. Similarly, easy and quick fun is not healthy for player-driven economy sandbox games. It might be, ctrl-64, that you prefer single-player or some other simpler games. Boundless requires more depth than most.

if every player was able to have every skill you wouldn’t have famous builders or famous weapon smiths

you wouldn’t have unique towns where you walk into one store and find it selling meats and the next store is selling stones

After more time on the testing server I am happy with the overall feel of skill sets and the skill tree.

I would like to see the cost of cleanse points upped a bit to make it harder to bypass the limitations (being able to change 10 epics per level gained is a bit much IMO) and I would like to see more skill sets per character to not be forced into alts again (at this point I will still be aiming for 3 alts but I really only want to play one).

personally I feel like being somewhat limited would be more fun, as then I can find interesting players with unique sets of skills and abilities rather then running into the same type of generalist player.

I would prefer if you could just talk for yourself and not generalise about everyone as if it’s fact. A lot of people have been playing Boundless for a long time and have put in huge amounts of time and effort to build up there characters and resources etc so I think it’s somewhat disingenuous to make this statement.

With too many restrictions how can it be played solo?
Why have you connected single players with trolling?
We all have our own opinions and play style/preferences and I think we should all understand and respect that. I don’t think anyone is saying that they want to start playing and then within a few days have a maxed out character that can do absolutely everything. People are more than willing to put the time and effort in to leveling up a character/s to be able to do most things alone or in groups. Even on the current live game you can’t have every single skill point maxed out, compromises have to be made. Personally I’m fine with that, I just hope that this new skill tree will allow solo players to continue to enjoy the game.

How do you know one causes the other? Did the skills used to be this way and shops were different?

As an aside, I dislike speciality stores. Obviously building is part of the game, people own their plots and they can build however they like but if I have a choice between one big room with everything within sight/a short walk, or sixteen different buildings, each selling one subset of items… I choose the former. Now and in the future.

I would contest language and effect here too - I’m not convinced that limiting skill sets forces specialisation like people think. It just means it takes greater time/investment to get back to the same state as now. If I were going to keep playing past 1.0, I’d make sure I had enough alts and sets to cover everything, because that’s how I enjoy the game. Well, used to enjoy the game.

I’ll bet a lot of others are thinking the same. I don’t believe there’s a cause/effect with skills. restrictions and shops/playstyle.

oh I think that was more of my bad wording, shops and characters should be separate things when it comes to what is in shops, what I’m saying is it would be cool to walk into one store which is a butchers and next door is a shop owned by some one is which is a black smith

How does your opinion on what’s best for everyone translate into longevity? Here, let’s check a sample size of one: me. Oh look, I’m not going to play any more if your idea of fun is what goes live at 1.0. Doesn’t sound like a long-lasting customer to me.

Yes sorry sometimes other’s thinking is a springboard to further thoughts but it’s not always that person’s original intent.

I’m curious why this is better (apart from my personal choice) or true. If I were sly, running the Gemporium, it’d stay just as it is now but my staff would increase. Actually if I were sly I’d just roll around laughing on a bed of coin.

Hey guys,

For the most part this has been a really good conversation to look through, let’s just be sure to keep everything constructive here - no need to pick out certain players for any reason. Everyone is allowed an opinion, and it’s important we all let everyone have their say; whether it’s positive or negative feedback, it’s all very useful.

We’ll be looking through the topics once the weekend is over and gathering up the feedback to discuss at the studio. Looks like there’s a few questions too, so we’ll be sure to answer them once we’re back in the office and have had the chance to read everything.

Keep up the feedback, we really appreciate it!

well it creates a sense of, Hey this player has the best black smith store, rather then hey this player has the best general store.

I’m also not saying a general store is bad, it is really helpful having everything in one place, but for unique shops it makes harder to think of who’s shop is who’s when they both sell everything they can get there hands on, rather then hey Player A has the shop which sells good tools and Player B has the best shop which sells refined stones

Heh, funny how we all work differently. I always remember shops by their building.

yea a unique building does help, but hey a themed shop, selling a certain type of product sounds more interesting then a general store that sells everything.
