Power Coils and Crafting Time

I’m having trouble finding any information now how power coils affect crafting time. On my refineries it looks like adding more than 14 coils doesn’t seem to lower the crafting time at all. Is this accurate?

I think it does but has diminishing returns so you will only really see it on stuff with very long crafting times.

Thanks for the response. I was wondering if there were diminishing returns. I guess that makes sense. Thanks!

I haven’t actually tested it, but I think others have.

Yeah, in general, the longer the craft time and the more spark it costs, the higher the power coil cap is.
There are some forging ingredients that have their cap at having 24 coils connected. But there are also some that don’t benefit from more than 6-8.

My advice is, look at what you craft and get that many coils

I did some small testing. At 12 Advanced Coils on a Refinery a stack of 50 Refined Stone takes 11m 44s. Going to 14 Advanced Coils drops that to 11m 41s. From there, going all the way to 24 Advanced Coils didn’t lower the crafting time below 11m 41s. It looks like - at least Refineries - don’t benefits from more than 14 Advanced Coils when it comes to craft time.

Thats a pretty short craft time for a test.

I tested this and I don’t think it’s worth it to have more than 14 coils on each machine.

Only forge gets a more noticeable benefit.

Its not concerning the machine type but how many power it needs to craft the item. If an item that needs 400 power to craft it, it will require less coils than one that needs 2400 power to get the maximum benefits

i think it got a bit of rework after than post, but the logic is the same.

Here is quick example of the Refinery with Ornate Gleam Chest mass crafts

12 Coils (not enough power to craft)

12

14 Coils

16 Coils

18 Coils

20 Coils

22 Coils

24 Coils

The time it takes and spark used goes down all the way to 24.

Here’s some numbers (spark requirements) for a high spark craft, which I collected manually.

0 coils 20000
1 coils 15323
2 coils 13938
3 coils 12809
4 coils 11902
5 coils 11187
6 coils 10633
7 coils 10216
8 coils 9909
9 coils 9693
10 coils 9546
11 coils 9452
12 coils 9397
13 coils 9368
14 coils 9355
15 coils 9351
16 coils 9350
17 coils 9350
18 coils 9350
19 coils 9350
20 coils 9350
21 coils 9350
22 coils 9350
23 coils 9350
24 coils 9350

Presumably the curve is similar for crafting time, and flattens to negligence around 16 coils over the requirement. But if you are looking at an item that doesn’t take long to craft, it’s going to be hard to see any benefit from those last few coils.

Exactly that!

If you plant to craft tons of long time items you may find useful to have all your machines with max coils.

If you won’t be doing that you may as well stop at 14 or 16 and just keep one machine with max coils.

Yeah, the Ornate Gleam Chest mass craft is a base spark cost of 50,000 so you get benefits all the way up to 24 coils. Guess it all comes down to what you are crafting.

I think lucent decorative blocks also have a drastic decrease in crafting times.

If I understand this correctly, the curve starts at the power requirement, so for something that requires more than 8 coils to craft, you can never max it out.

Edit:

Ornate Gleam Pole mass craft is another good example. I tested it from 9 (can not craft)… 10 coils is the minimum power to make those so its starts to benefit from the additional coils from there on out as you said.

Number of coils Spark Cost Craft Time
9 100,000 8h 20m
10 100,000 8h 20m
11 89,458 7h 27m
12 80,757 6h 43m
14 67,913 5h 39m
16 59,736 4h 58m
18 54,794 4h 33m
20 51,542 4h 19m
22 50,303 4h 11m
24 49,253 4h 6m

Okay, so there must be a hard limit per item. I mostly tested my use case. I’m mass refining stone both for building and for the xp. It doesn’t go down below 11m 41s. It’s good to know that it does matter for higher items. Thanks, @Soju-VB!

Yeah, as @Nightstar said, it depends on the min power required and then the benefits taper off from there. So low or no power required crafts will not benefit all the way up to 24 but as you get into higher power requirements to make things the benefits of more than 12 coils starts to show itself.

The only thing that matters is extra power on top of the recipe power requirement, there’s a graph here that shows you the reduction curve after that.
